As an artist I understand completely what he means.. It's hard to draw if you don't feel like it. You can but it's not as enjoyable as completely enjoying what you create. Especially being a perfectionist it can really stress you out, even if it's not terrible, to know you could have done it better but didn't. Alot of times I feel my work is rushed because I forced and fought this feeling instead of going with the flow and drawing from inspiration.. Since he's way more talented than I, it must be a more intense experience than I can imagine

In the portrayal of the character Matahachi when he's old an telling stories of Musashi to people on the streets for money. He seems to be annoyed by the people only wanting to know about sword fights and killing. That for me is a criticism from Inoue to the readers that want only a generic story and forgetting about the grow and philosophy of the character.

Man people didn't like that farmer arc? I loved it. The best thing about vagabond is how Inoue applies a unique and deep philosophy behind the generic "I must become the best samurai" storyline. As a fellow, less talented artist, I can empathize with this feeling. When you lose the enthusiasm to work on a piece, you sort of replace that positive energy with melancholy and even a sense of doom. You want to return to a piece so badly but you just don't have it in you. There are some rare instances where you can come back to a piece and complete it seamlessly, but most times you just realize how this project just needs to come to an end because your passion just isn't as strong as it was when you first started. Sometimes I wish that art was just a problem you could solve by sitting down and putting in some time and effort to figure out. Sadly, there are no answers when it comes to artwork. Most likely, though.. It's because I'm a noncommitted procrastinator. Either works.

Wow, I'm going through this right now. Somehow I have lost the passion to draw or finish my drawings. But I wanted to draw so bad, wanted to continue my art work, but when I sit there in front of the paper with pencil on my hand, or looking at the computer screen with a tablet pen in my hand nothing would come out. And even if it does it just feel bad, unearned or just not up to my standards. I have been trying to get myself into it but it just feels so tiring just drawing somehow. It is a weird feeling. Or maybe, like you said, we are just procrastinators.

Maybe those are the feelings he needs to bring to the story. Like a warrior he's lost his passion for it. It happens to real life fighters as well. The best possible ending would probably be to just show his own feelings through that character. Not how he wants to feel but how he truly does now at the end of the journey. The longing to go do something different and new that rekindles a new fire and passion. The pen is mightier than the sword. Maybe thats what miyomoto figures out in the end.

I get this so much. I looked back at my passionate self when I first enter art school. Now I felt like I lack genuine feelings while painting and that the things I produce are lackluster. These days I can't even lift my pencil. I wonder where those passion and excitement go. I know that I need to practice. There are projects that I discontinued and honestly just can't bother to finish. I have a project that I held very dear but it still remained as a sketch that I haven't colored like I was planning to. I felt like I couldn't finish the piece in the condition where there is not single a speck of joy or motivation on doing my craft. Sadly things have been like this for over a year.

Incredibly insightful. I’ve read and re-read the vagabond series countless times and I agree with you entirely that Inoue is making the right choice in waiting for the moment to return. It’s the only way the story will ring true. This is the work of a true artist. He is infusing his own life into his art. It’s a rare privilege to witness such honesty in one’s art, and we are all better for it. It’s interesting to note the parallels between Musashi’s current dilemma in the starving village and what Inoue is going through writing Vagabond. His fans are like the starving villagers looking to him to save them from starvation. Both Inoue and Musashi are searching for their former strength to pull them through (return to the cave). In the story, Musashi is given ample opportunity to return to his old life as a master swordsman and is often pressured to do so by those around him, but Musashi refuses because he knows he still has not shed the weight of his own demons. He knows he couldn’t possibly defeat Kojiro until he finds that strength inside himself just as Inoue knows he couldn’t possibly finish the series as it deserves until he finds his peace. It’s brilliant. I applaud Takehiko Inoue for sharing his journey with the world. Thanks for the great video.

I found Vagabond at just the right time in my life, i needed something that was purely different in terms the art, the action, and the philosophy that almost every other series goes with. Vagabond for me was heavy. It weighed on me in a spiritual sort of way. Musashi's and Kojiro's introspective paths were absolutely satisfying. I had seen almost nothing like it before in manga. Im on the side that will sit and wait until inoue is READY to continue this masterpiece. Edit: as you can tell, my profile pic is Kojiro as a baby sleeping with the sword, Vagabond was big for me.

The "Farming" arc is mostly a thing because the entire manga itself is inspired by the famous novel by Eiji Yoshikawa called "Musashi". It was for Japan what Gone With the Wind is for the United States. There are plenty of parallels made, but Takehiko Inoue brought a lot of originality to the manga that gives it a different atmosphere. But if you guys want to see how the story will generally end, I strongly recommend you read the original novel. It's very long(almost 1,000 pages in the English translation), but that's all the better if you end up loving the story. It gives you more information about the background of Edo period Japan and its history, it has the spiritualism that Vagabond is known to have, and you can learn a lot about Feudal Japanese society as you read through it. It's an amazing book that has forever imprinted Miyamoto Musashi into modern Japanese society.

@Twilight_Samurai 6 жыл бұрын
Ammar Mohsin Sorry for the late reply. I love and appreciate both. I'm a practitioner of Kenjutsū and Iaijutsū, so my deep passion for Japanese swordsmanship is apparent when I read them. Miyamoto Musashi is, in a lot of ways, a role model for me in my training and I have studied his life and writings closely. One should keep in mind that the Musashi that Eiji Yoshikawa and Takehiko Inoue have created are not absolutely true for the real one, but they have done an excellent job in humanizing a person that not too much is widely known about. The clever research and realism for both the Edo period and martial arts never ceases to impress me. I feel Eiji's novel shines the most in the way it brings depth to the story mentally and Takehiko's manga shines the most in its visual power. Eiji has referenced so many real events and classic philosophical writings in the book and the way Takehiko draws the imagery in combat feels so authentic to the Japanese philosophy. For example, Takuan mentions The Art of War by Sun Tzu in the novel(can't remember if it was also in the manga), which was a popular treatise on military strategy written over 2,000 years ago. Generals and businessmen use it to this day. And in the manga, Musashi as a child was training alone and said that he was "filled with emptiness". Emptiness is one of many concepts in Buddhism that left a strong impression on Japanese martial arts. In The Book of Five Rings(written by the real Musashi not long before he supposedly died of lung cancer), the final chapter talks about Emptiness/Void in reference to swordsmanship.

You can have a different opinion on whether or not it deserves the top spot, but saying that Berserk isn't one of the greatest manga ever written is factually and objectively false ;) I've been re-reading through the entire manga (for the 5th time...) and I'm amazed at how much thought and care was put into crafting those multi layered plots and characters in such a long running story. I still find new nuances to character dialogue every time I read through this manga, that's how deep some of the questions this manga asks are. Miura built characters so humane I always find references to actual books on personal development I've read and studied some time ago (see The Human Element theory from William Schutz for example). First and foremost, Berserk is a story about people, bonds and relationships and what happens when those are created or destroyed. On this front Berserk is untouchable in the manga sphere with one of the best (if not THE best) romance I have ever seen in any form of media. And it also has the most layered character arcs I have ever seen in Casca, Guts and Griffith. Everything in this manga is genius the only objective flaw I can think of is the slow release schedule and the absence of a good anime, that's it. Everything else boils down to personal preference, not actual flaw in the writing of the story. EDIT: My favourite manga are Berserk, Vagabond, GANTZ, Claymore, Lone Wolf & Cub, Hunter X Hunter and Monster, each and everyone of those are unique and objectively genius is some way or another. I'll have no problem calling those the M-word. But when it comes to which of those resonates the most with me as a person (my opinion, for short), Berserk stands head and shoulders over the rest.

Man... I forgot how beautiful the art is. You can literally feel the grittiness and textures through the page. The man is crazy for going full on traditional in this digital age (which many mangaka are usuing nowadays). I do art as a hobby and have a very short attention span. If I'm not feeling a project anymore I leave it unfinished or just scrap it. I can only imagine working on such a detailed series such as Vagabond. It starts off as a passionate project. Your passionate is what drives you into starting the series. I can only imagine working in the enviornment of pressuring deadlines and losing that motiviation. I can totally get what the man means when its like a death. The manga is his baby, you don't want to half ass anything especially knowing you have a dedicated fan base relying on you. I would much rather he gets back on his feet, soul search, or heck take a holiday. With the way mangaka are worked to the bone, I'm not even surprised when mangaka want to go on hiatus.

I think that the farming arc is one of the greatest things literature has done for us. Simple, insightful, showing us that through community and open mindedness we can come together and find true strength. There are things that we can't give ourselves alone. No one person is an island. No one person has to bear this weight alone. Seek yourself, be vulnerable to others so that you can know ones self. Keep that close to your heart as you proceed. Well, now some times has passed and I wanna give my opinion about it so far: THIS IS truly perfection. It's a story that makes me think about my own life. It's a timeless masterpiece. I'd rather say the way is the goal in this manga, not the goal itself that Takezo has set for himself. Because how Takezo's journey is going on is so well written that I cannot criticize anything so far. As example the fight against Inshun: The tension was brutal but they didn't fight physically for the most part. How Inoue illustrated the fight, what happened before and after. That was a perfect fight imo. The reason why is just this: the circumstances, the beauty of describing all of this emphasized the meaning of the character Takezo and his opponents for my own life. It's just like Inoue illustrated methaphors for many people to learn from it. Many authors have tried this but they lack the impressive style Inoue has shown. It gives me something to reconsider how I value some things, where I've failed, where things went right a long time ago. But that's just for me. It's something no other story gave me so far in that short amount of time. In kinda beauty this manga gets a 13.5/10. It's just out of the scale to be measured. All the details it has (a.e. the drops of sweat or facial expressions) make it a gathering of masterpieces.

Honestly, for me both Berserk and HxH already ended. Spoilers ahead, but... Caska awakened, that's it. For mer, Berserk became really special when the rpg party was formed, the objective was not to kill a godlike being with an invincible army (we know this is impossible), the objective got smaller and more focused: they were on a peregrination to restore the health of Caska. They did that in a way, so I am satisfied. To see her open her eyes, talking normally.. That was a satisfying journey imo. Now for HxH, we had a long story that ended when Gon meet his father, after that what we can expect? More crazy and creative gimmicks using that ki thing that I already forgot the name, lol HxH had plenty of interesting little arcs, plenty of rules, etc.. A very good shonen that reached it's initial goal. The next chapters of both series will feel like extras to me, I am honestly satisfied. Now Vagabond, yes, this series needs a proper ending. Musashi didn't faced a enemy of his same level yet, he is not truly invincible.
@DEATHxTHExKIDx1
@DEATHxTHExKIDx1 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed for the most part. HxH 2011 that has a solid definitive end Gon met his dad I'm pretty much fine with that. The Dark Continent sounds exciting but is extra probably never gonna see it. Berserk we did get Casca back to normal. So whatever Guts next goal is I feel Casca will influence it. Plus I wanna see how much the world changes once they leave Elf Island since time Passes Faster in the outside world. World may be completely changed by Griffith once they leave. VAGAbound Im actually not Caught up probably behind like 20chapters
@RRRRRRRRR33
@RRRRRRRRR33 6 жыл бұрын
Like you said, HxH had a definitive ending, I also didn't read anything about the dark continent. The manga's art is almost unbearable, but I did read HxH and watched the recent anime until Gon meets his father. It ended to me. If one day they announce HxH was finished, then I will read the dark continent thing.. Until then, I am fine. Now about Berserk, I don't really care about Grifitth at all. I did talked about with a friend recently, Grifitth is like a cheat code, he manipulates everything with ease, his monsters are stronger than other apostles, etc.. So, there's no fun in watching a invincible character, he is not achieving anything. Gutts on the other hand, he suffered a LOT to bring Caska back, so he fulfilled something imo. The rpg quest was pretty omuch ver, I remember I stopped reading right after the sea king died, I returned recently expecting to see the elf island completed and it was pretty cool, I am satisfied with Berserk. The rest is filler to me... But I admit, I am curious to see the next chapter featuring Caska. If she returns to a catatonic state just by looking at Gutts, that will be the trolling of the century. 20 years and the author fuck the fans like that, it will be hilarious to watch lol

R Maura At this point Miura is probably sick of writing Berserk so I don’t think he’ll be doing anything too long to elongate the series much longer. Also Togashi just needs an illustrator and if we’re lucky we’ll probably get chapters weekly or every two weeks because he did say he’s searching for one but knowing his pride he’ll probably be extremely picky and won’t ever find one. I mean the man doesn’t let anyone help with his backgrounds like 80%+ of other mangaka and has only let his wife illustrate, It’s no wonder his illustrations aren’t up to snuff with his competition. I also think Sasaki’s invincible under the sun since Ito Itossai said it. Miyamoto also almost died against Ito while Sasaki ripped off half of his hand but it’ll be interesting if Inoue can even be bothered to finish off what he started

Such a beautifully put together video. Thank you. Vagabond is one of the arts that impacted my psyche the most since I was in high school, and I am okay with the series "ending" like this. There is an utmost beauty in the choice that the artist made, a reflection of the very theme of struggle which made Vagabond a pure art that distinguishes itself from others in the medium. I always thought of Musashi and his swordplay as a direct translation of the artist's own mentality and the portrayal of his artistry/artistic struggles. And if, like Musashi's inner conflict before facing the biggest opponent of his swordsman life, Inoue's conflicts amidst of this artistic crisis of his is telling him that the resolution has to be in a form of halting the story from going forward, I think that is a very fitting and even the most beautiful ending you can give to the series.

I think there is a serious issue with alot of manga where the artists prolong the story past their own interests which then leads to them dumbing down the style to cope, it makes more sense to lead into an ending when the love is starting to get lost. Working on the same thing for numerous years will eventually burn you out, it's better to start something new.

tetsuo yugen Not exactly, the movies (Studio 4C) actually did it pretty close, even the old anime has better quality. Again, I believe this is more on the mismanagement of the franchise in many levels. Even If they really still want to go CGI, why not fully goes something like Infini-T Force (Digital Frontier/Tatsunoko Production) with more details & fluid animations +30fps/motion blur?? This isn't even including the main director that has awful portfolio regarding action drama series.

Vagabond is the greatest works of manga around. I used to think it was Berserk, or Gantz, but then this story based in reality, completely lacking in fantastical monsters and world bending magics, made me both laugh and cry. There is so much beauty in the relationships that build, grow, and perish throughout this story. There may never be a concise ending, but that feels appropriate; allowing each reader to imagine what Takezo and Kojiro experienced next.

When i got the farming arc i was blown away, it made me realize that we had such a bloody story, where Miyamoto ended up with a enormous number of lives taken and after that in this arc he is struggling just as much trying to grown life instead of taking it. That made me put into perspective that this manga is a challenge to the reader and to the artist, because Inoue tried to make a story about trying to avoid violence, its like a typical journey but backwards, that amazed me so much and i think will never see something like that again.

The farming arc is one of the most important arcs in understanding Musashi. if you have ever read way of the 5 rings you will understand that much like Sun Tzu with the art of war the strategies learnt through combat can be applied to numerous ways to living. The farming arc is Musashi for the first time applying his self taught rules of killing to a different subject matter, ultimately giving life through crop growing and seeing a bit of the mathematical structure that rules us all

As someone who had art-blocks in huge gaps, holding baggage is an internal struggle. Artists, sometimes, unconsciously create byproducts while making art. It is like a side-effect to reach that mental state, it unlocks something deep in the mind which can be at times helpful with the flow and progress of the art but it can also create unnecessary distractions the artist inwardly unravel within themselves. A reflection of what they want to project towards the art they are making somehow attacks their own creative thinking. It is the opposite of losing their train of thought but it is instead a run-away train carrying stowaways.

As someone who has both the Vagabond series, along with Sumi and Water. I would gladly have the endings be nothing more than beautiful pictures of each moment, in their thoughts, or actual scenes, he wishes to display, with a high glorifying quality, we all love him fore. His drawings are ART, beyond beautiful and amazing, each moment shown, can be glorified violence in it's highest ecstacy, or a near tranquil moment, or pure sadness/mourning/dread/despair/foreboding and so forth. He truly can make each piece tell a larger scale of story, and with the already established character arcs and stories, we very well may have all the context ever needed, to speculate or decode each beautiful piece.
