You should check out the berserk chapter wher ethe author talks. He has so much material around himself because he tries to get inspired by what older artists got inspired on. Going to the roots takes a ton of hard work and you need a lot of material expecially when making something that is realistic or makes sense.

There's a documentary somewhere on YT that covers the professional and personal life (or lack there of) of a famous manga artist(mb its even on this channel). To cut a long story short: As per tradition, in a hyper-competitive market the Japanese workers are kinda expected to hyper-achieve at the job, whatever that job may be. So, for literal decades he sacrificed any semblance of a life outside THE WORK. Demonstrating almost inhuman levels of dedication & iron-like discipline, he somehow managed to do THE WORK for as long as he did... until one day he could NO MORE. He came to hate the one thing he ever loved, and was passionate about, his artistic process, his art. Burn-Out - they call it. And as I understand it, it's not a very uncommon occurrence in the Big-Manga-Industry,. p.s. by the end of the film I was left feeling depressed and inspired at the same time, it was weird. 10/10 highly recommended p.p.s. sorry but nope. can't recall the title nor the name of the Artist, i tryed...

I keep telling people every artist use reference and people need to get over this false notion reference is bad

From my observations and experiences, there are 3 types of professional artists: 1. An artist who, after coming up with a composition themselves, takes their own photography(or works straight from a live model) and copies in major details from those photos into the final pieces. 2. An artist who literally only *refers* to their references to help them remember the parts or characteristics of whatever they are drawing without copying anything in directly(e.g. pulling up medical images to remember how many ribs there are for their undead skeleton warrior). 3. An artist who studies thoroughly anything they intend to draw, but almost never has reference open while drawing. There is a 4th type, but I consider them more designers than artists per se since the art is not the product for the consumption of the general public, and that is concept artists who photo bash or paint over 3D. This type of work has extremely tight deadlines, and the "art" is only meant to help the rest of the team build the real final product, i.e. video games and films.

I usually take my time to aprecciate every page.

If Miura learns Sakamoto's workflow I'm sure he won't take another 20 years to finish Berserk...

Having read Innocent and being a history student, I can tell you the 18th century French were every bit as extravagant as portrayed in the manga. The Rococo period period in art and design is famous for it's ludicrous levels of embellishment on all manner of items, to the point where modern westerners often find the stuff ugly.

for short, leave it to the readers' imagination. similar to when writing novel, you don't write *crash* *bazinga* or some sort, don't tell but show what happen to maximize the immersive experience to the utmost limit.

I will say this to anyone aspiring to write something, be it a manga or a novel, READ READ READ. If you want to create a serious, no bullshit story like AoT, Berserk, Monster, history helps a lot. Read what you want to write about, analyze characters of famous works, expose yourself to other cultures through books or songs or even KZfaq. Knowledge is key when it comes to good writing and obviously you'll need to grow your own creative skills as well.

If you need help with story telling- i suggest watching videos by abbie emmons! She breaks up the science of storytelling really really well! I've recently started a webtoon and I'm close to your age so don't give up!

As an aspiring comic artist around that age, I feel that. I too gave up before I even started for years because of those same insecurities. I'd mask them with the delusion that drawing is really just a hobby to me, just a way to kill time every now then. That's why I don't have to try, that's why it shouldn't hurt when the things I make don't measure up to my standards. At some point I had to realize that there's nothing that scares me more than art, because there's nothing I love more than art. I put it away during some of the worst times of my life and I only ever got out of them once I picked up my pencils and brushes again. I dropped out of college last year to pursue my art (in whichever ways it manifests) and while I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, I don't regret it for a second. I'm no longer worried for my art itself so much, I've still got long ways to go but ever since I took it seriously and found my learning style, I'm confident in my ability to improve. The one lingering insecurity is that of lacking life experience for which I feel like there's only so much I can do so quickly. But to keep this short and sweet, I've concluded that no matter how grand and intricate some of the stories I want to tell are, it's best to start off small and focused in order to do them justice. For example, there are two of my projects that I can see myself realistically starting off with; one is a little comic with short chapters intimately focused on two characters and their psychology/interactions. My hope is that it will familiarize me with the creative process in a beginner-friendly, easily-manageable small scale; writing characters- keeping track of their motivations and dynamics- and the technical aspects of it- its visual direction, panel layout etc. Once I start with that and feel a little more confident in myself, I plan to write a short series, hoping it will be thematically simple, yet effective. I have very limited experience in pretty much everything, so in order to write something with emotional honesty behind it I decided to begin by writing about something that concerns me personally. I've been thinking a lot about being an adult and growing up and while I don't have all the answers yet, I'd like to explore that through a surrealistic coming of age story with otherworldly visuals. And move from there to telling increasingly more complex and ambitious stories in terms of character, plot, themes etc. Point is, hold onto that manga you want to create but probably work your way up to it one step at the time. It's the one thing I can come up with to combat my fear that I will irrevocably screw over my stories with poor execution due to my lack of experience, even though I think they are great in concept. I'm a firm believer that there's no any one correct way of creating though, so this is just a suggestion should you find any value in it. Best of luck!

i started reading innocent in 2016 as well and the amount of gruesome scenes and fucked up shit portrayed there made my stomach turn and gave me nausea so i stopped reading it thinking 'i wonder what kinda fucked up person wrote this manga' now years later im here like yeah.... indeed fucked up but i can see the artistry and his vision n wheres he's coming from. but the series is definitely not for faint of heart, not my cup of tea tho i do respect his work. i think i might try kokou no hito as the other person here suggested.

There are many realistic manga like this for example berserk vinland saga vagabond lone wolf and cub it's just that they are not adapted into anime because they are not as popular as shonen manga

Now a days, the look of old style manga can be perfectly replicated in a digital medium, such as chainsaw man looking sketchy, and Fire Punch having such qualities at diverse points, just like black and white is still used in today's landscape and film, ink and paper style isn't abandoned, it just evolved
