My mother passed away in December of 2018, and I wanted a watch to that I could wear to remind me of her and carry on her legacy. I found a Waltham A-11 that was issued in 1945, (her birth year), to an American Soldier towards the end of WWII. It hacks, hand-winds, and still keeps great time, (+/- 15 sec), for such an old piece. I even found an original NOS two piece canvas strap that was issued to the service men of that era by the American Strap Company in NYC! Being such a vintage watch, I only wear it on really special occasions and every Sunday, which is when I would go out to her house and cook her and my father dinner. Just a little sentimental history for you guys. I love vintage Waltham. Great video!

I work for the Va - spoke to a patient of mine re: my love for military watches. He is 99 and was stationed in England during WWII outfitting B24 bombers. He said while he wasn’t issued a watch, he did take the cock pit clock of a B24 before leaving England wounded. He shared with me the Waltham AN 5743 which was in fair condition and able to fire up with a few winds. A very cool piece he uses as a desk clock now.

Waltham went through a couple ownership travails in the 19th Century, nearly went broke in the early 20s, then moved to (cheap) Swiss production in the middle 1950s, before selling out to become "Waltham of Chicago" at the end of the decade. Then they sold to a Japanese company in the 1980s, and maybe once again, before becoming the company they are today. For me, a collector of Waltham wristwatches, the deal is the 1910s through the 1940s. Very similar company to the Illinois company Elgin - with whom they were accused of colluding as a "watch trust."

I remember Watham well from the 60's and 70's, it was a quartz casualty. The owners were really older at the time and could make the adjustment. I was a child at the time that intently listened to adult conversations and my Mom was working for a Jewelry trade company. I heard some of her friends / clients talking about the Waltham owners as old Jewish guys who were not going to change their ways to accomodate a "Fad" of the quartz watch! Actually they were right in a way but they over estimated American Consumer intelligence. I did not like a battery oriented watch, never have, because after one battery change the damn things stop working correctly; with mechanical watches back in the 60's repairs were a whole lot cheaper and there was a shop on every corner. So really Waltham didn't even try quartz and they went under pronto!

My dad had the same vintage Waltham day date that you’ve shown. Recently I was very disappointed to have searched Wittnauer and found that they produce some of the most unattractive variations of some of Bulova’s most unattractive current watches. Such a shame when you consider that they weee once partners with Longines who though not the most prestigious luxury watch are successful because they do create very beautiful watches. The US brand that I mourn most is Gruen. Gruen though not a high end brand created the Curvex which was one of the most elegant creations in the history of jewelry and an engineering feat. In 1992 I purchased myself a quartz rose gold elongated Seiko tank watch that was my first nice watch as a gift to myself specifically because it looked like a Curvex and though I’ve purchased quite a few high end luxury watches since I have no reservations about wearing it because it’s beautiful, elegant and timeless. Besides anyone who has anything to say about needed be around me.

To avoid high paid watchmakers union labor in the late 50's , Waltham built a new swiss factory for making movements. They shipped the movements back to the US where they still assembled the watches as made in the USA. They ran into trouble with the FTC for this, and decided to keep the swiss mfg. operation and shut down the US mfg. They merged the US sales & marketing with Hallmark which was a distributor. They continued to produce watches under Waltham and many other retail house brand names, for instance "Stellaris and Sears watches for Sears". I don't believe they ever really went away , the name just got lost in the fog of so many generic house brand names the distributor focused on supplying, its just another name on their list.
@carrite
@carrite 5 ай бұрын
To be fair, their American competitors like Benrus, Bulova, Elgin, and Hamilton, were doing the same thing. Tariffs were no longer enough to put the imported movements at a competitive disadvantage, and that's all she wrote for the American watch industry...
