The Buddha talked about a continuum of consciousness, so was he talking about souls? It’s a common misconception that Buddhism teaches about reincarnation, when it is actually teaching about rebirth. In this video I explain the Buddha’s position on the soul theory as well as the difference between rebirth and reincarnation. Within the Buddhist teachings there are several analogies to explain how consciousness continues moment to moment and what happens after death. I draw on these analogies to illustrate just how this continuity takes place and how consciousness is affected after death.
Also, being the inquisitive creatures that we are, it’s not surprising that we ask, ‘well, what am I, what is my true nature and what will I be if I’m enlightened?’ In this video, I explore the main reason why the Buddha didn't specify our ‘true nature’ and I share some sutras where the Buddha does describe the beauty and freedom experienced by one who is enlightened.

I don't know what is Rinzai but I understand that Zen is just a small part of Buddhism that emphasized more on mindfulnes that appeals more to Western people.

Hello Mindah-Lee, I'm a senior American Theravada Buddhist for the past five years. I have been diligent and read about the teachings of the Buddha extensively. I pay homage to the three refuges every day. The Abbot at my local temple (Palm Springs, California) tells me to quit reading and just practice and be the best Buddhist that I can be every day, I agree with him. I find that you are the BEST Buddhist teacher and explainer that I've encountered ever. The reasons for this are your background, knowledge, education. experience, impeccable English, presentation, dedication, style and attractiveness (i'm sorry, that is not sexist but a great plus for your efforts). My problem with the other Australian Buddhist monks has always been that their English speaking is not understandable at all to Americans, I'm sorry to say this. Please continue to present your teachings of the Buddha. I will support you and I hope that many, many other people around the world will also do so. I wish you great health and success.

Right, I was raised catholic for my entire life, Buddhism found me and I automatically recognized and understood it., I was literally born a Buddhist here in America without any cultural connections to Buddhism. I try to explain the teachings to people but they don't or won't understand.

Who or what is doing the clinging to these aggregates? You say that our clinging to these create the illusion of self, but this implies something separate doing the clinging and creating the illusion it is experiencing. This has always confused me whenever I listen to anyone speaking about Buddhism.

Parts of this remind me a lot of the 5 Koshas in Yoga. The five veils, including the body in the personality, which hide us from our true selves. And then in Yoga the true self isn't defined either.

The example of the two candles, is a bit difficult in a practical sense. If one reincarnates already before one has died that person lives in two bodies with two different personalities that have a connection which is difficult when there is awareness of this connection. Especially when one of the two undergoes transformation by a person that ‘harvests’ tries to change the karma with mind force. This is a possibility no theoretical stuff. One of the best explanations I have heard.

Hi Mindah, I really love the clarity of your presentation, and I'm a big fan of all of your videos. The best explanation I've encountered of the continuity of consciousness between incarnations is in Meher Baba's "God Speaks." He writes that there IS a "soul" but that -- like the body but over an infinitely vaster time scale -- it is a temporary medium for the evolution and involution of consciousness. In other words, the existence of the soul does not imply a permanent separate self. Rather, the soul is like a cocoon within which consciousness "incubates." Meher Baba likens it to a drop of the infinite ocean, which is never actually separate from the ocean but experiences itself as separate for the purpose of accruing mental impressions, which are the means whereby evolution is driven forward. If you're ever in the New York area let me know. My wife and I will save you the hotel fees!

My best explanation what I experience between lives is that there is an unknown process of thoughts (without form) I imagine it so small that electrons and quarks are large. Atoms are recycled at death into different molecules so thoughts have a different unknown process where they are recycled and somehow attached to a different form of life. It is a perception to recognise a different (dead) person, it is never the old person.

I have a question about people who had near death experience, they said that in the afterlife, their recognized other souls who were their family members on the previous life, therefore they brought their conciousness in the other dimensions. And how will you explain people who were reincarnated knows exactly and remember their past life.

Aladdin Malgapo Buddhist believe that therw are many levels of heavens and hells. Heavenly beings can recall limited number of past lives. Their memory depends on how they lived their life on earth. If they have lived their life according to buddhism, then they have great powers even in their afterlife. Like Sakka( heavenly king if trayastrimsa heaven) confirmed that those who are buddhists in their past life they are more radiant than followers of other religions. In Thaioland we learned from the tritipakata book 9 of Suttantapidok that the one who travels in samsara is called "sattanung". It is the one who delights, enjoys, ambitious in the 5 aggregates because of "awicha". However there is no further explanation to the nature of this "sattanung". Maybe your explanation of the string fits this "sattanung"

Hi Steven Chen. Your questions are fine but you appear too be conflating subjects. The five aggregates are empty of SELF. This does not men that the MIND, "knowing", is not able to provide intuition. It operates at coarse, subtle (hidden) and exceedingly subtle levels. W e normally think we exist in our heads and behind the eyes, This identification is caused by the bindus or aggregates of attention that gather in that spot while we are in the coarse waking condition. When we dream or direct attention within to mind objects these binds move downward to the base of the throat. Just so in deep sleep they fall to the level of the heart. MIND itself has clarity . This is why so many problems are solved in sleep. The problem is that most humans are barely awake in the waking condition and the situation worsens in sleep. Deep sleep for most is experienced as a blackout. To be awake in deep sleep is however held to be the omniscient condition of mind. Mind itself while also lacking inherent exist , can and does appear with intuition . Happy to continue this discussion. if you revert. Remember please that Buddhism is a recondite philosophy (hard to understand) and the Buddha noted that it is not for everybody. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, makes this very point and often tells non Buddhist friends not to change their paths as we are radically different from the various God / SELF traditions.

Thank you for this helpful explanation. However it still leaves me a bit unsure how the "mindstream" is meant to go on into another body/life, even if it's not a "permanent" entity. Also I wonder, do you imagine that the consciousness switches on in a new body/life at the moment that the old body dies? Or do you think it travels in a disembodied way to enter the new body? I know that some Buddhists believe in ghosts and I understand also that Tibetan buddhism talks about in-between states called bardos. I similarly have never grasped what the actual mechanism is supposed to be by which anything that can be said to be us (even assuming it's not "permanent") can arise in another body after the death of a previous one.

+orlando098 The Buddha never taught about a continuum of consciousness or mindstream. Rebirth-linking is merely a later-day sectarian interpretation of something the Buddha taught but not necessarily what the Buddha taught. That is why you are unsure about it. If you cannot experience it, it is not the Buddha's teaching since the Buddha taught all of his teachings are to be experienced by the wise for themselves (paccattam veditabbo vinnuhi).

It doesn't matter how one describes it and I won't care so much about that part of the knowledge. What matters is living the present moment well as every present moment makes the next and our future depends on our present and the past. Knowing everything on how it works is not going to change the process. Just follow the Noble 8 Fold Path and you will reach your destination.

I think that five Categories(aggregates) can t define using physical dimensions . But no problem it is a psychological situation.That Pali word "skanda" does not mean matter .Pali word to the matter (Rupa or Datu). in five aggregate we can t see as Rupa real pronunciation is Rupaupadanaskandha,Wedanaupadanaskada,Sangaupadanaskanda,Sanaskaraupadanaskanda like that. (Rupa and Datu)same meaning=matter, but (skandha and Kaya)same meaning may be psychological situation but cant define using Physical dimensions.

It is not consciousness that moves between lives, although the illusion makes it appear that way. It's the process of dependent origination that goes from life to life. It is the process of dependent origination that creates the illusion of "being", but it is the process of dependent origination itself that is cycling over and over again creating "being" in "samsara". The sutta is clear it is not consciousness that moves between the life's, in htr Bhikku Sati Pernicious view sutta, who the Buddha condemns bodhi Satti for telling monks it is consciousness that moves between the life's. It is definitely an illusion that consciousness moves between lifes, just as it's an illusion that you had the same consciousness 5 years ago. Ultimately, the Buddha taught it us it is the process of dependent origination that continues to proliferate between life's.

Excellent lecture, the analogy with the beads is very good but still it does not explain how your past karma is being transfered without a permanent entity like soul. If there is no soul and if there is no continuity, there is no way karma can be transfered from one birth to next. However, Buddhists believe in karma being transfered from one birth to next but not in a permanent soul as a vehicle to transfer.

Thank you for the excellent comments. "Soul" as an eternal entity is held not to exist and we note that it cannot be found . We having been searching for it to no avail since the time of the Buddha. What does 'exist" is MIND if you understand that it as well falls under MAYA" of is and is not and neither is nor is not. This 'MAYA" is really a pre-Buddhist understanding also endemic to other Indic family teachings such as Vedanta which is a close relative of Buddhism. We, however go one step further. In some way Buddhism is a finalized Indic philosophy. You a love excellent comments notes both relative and Absolute truths. It appears that you understand the answer to your own question? I will be happy to continue this discussion if you care to reply.

"Sorry, it took two months for me to note your comment and respond, thank you for your comment. "Soul" cannot be found because you are trying to find your "soul" (or consciousness, the eternal witness) with your "soul"(or self) . Finding your own "self"is a subjective experience, it is not objective. "Maya" of Advaita Vedanta is different from what you are saying. In Advaita Vedanta, only "Brahman" exists, everything else is illusion or "maya". Brahman is everything, you, me and everything . Advaita Vedanta makes more sense to me than the 'anatma" theory of Buddhism.

@@cpadman5800 agreed. There is so much the issue of translations and interpretations. There has to be a jeevatma (sukhma sole which is wrongly put forth as sole- in anatta reference) for the karma concept to work. Vedant is ultimate knowledge. Who clinges to the ideas ?- in the buddhist analogy- it has to be something separate from body mind intellect and that is the individual consciousness- the jeevatma which is part of the the atman/bramha/pure consciousness. These Buddhist teachings are confusing to say the least. One more things is anatta is not no atman. Nathatta is no atman !

Think of energy transformation theory discovered by Einstein. In Buddhism, it's not called soul because the term "soul" usually refers to the same person. According to the Buddha, nothing stay permanent (think of evolution here) so this soul or consciousness is ever evolving just like the physical body.

If anatta is no atman, what is nathatta ? If there is no jeeva/sole/self that reincarnates what continuity and karma are we talking about. What is it that 'clinges to the aggregates' as per the speaker here when she says 'you' ? Its not the body , mind, intellect. What is it then

if a person does some bad deeds during this life it is said that he will have to suffer for them either during the present life or during one of his future births. if the suffering takes place in a future life who actually suffers. it is definitely not the same person who committed the bad deed, which is not fair. The person who suffers a karma from another lifetime is neither the same nor different nor different and the same. Suggest that you examine your knowledge of maya.

How is it not fair ? Eg if you did something very bad and escaped the law or punishment (reminds me of politicians 😇) and didn't do enough good karma later this life to offset the bad karma, so if you suffer as a different being(next life), you still can feel and suffer for it, why not fair ? It's only not fair if you don't receive any punishment OR if you could be "forgiven" by something.

Just as men have fingers, toes, ears, shoes, houses and books, etc., they 'HAVE" consciousness. Consciousness certainly does not retain its characteristics as is NOT independent of the 'OBJECT" of consciousness. How can it be and still be CONSCIOUSNESS.? To say "I am conscious" means I am conscious of something. It is meaningless to say I am conscious of nothing for then there would be no consciousness. In actual experience 'CONSCIOUSNESS" arises with it 'OBJECT" and changes as the object rapidly changes and passes away. Just so 'Consciousness" arises and changes many time even in the course of a simple conversation. Were this NOT the case we would all be not unlike dead logs. And this is the Buddhist issue with positing the existence of a CREATOR GOD. No Creator God iS found in Buddhism . We do find an 'APPARENT" "I" that the Buddha likened to a REFLECTION" in a mirror that APPEARS but cannot be found in the MIRROR nor apart from the Mirror. (I am referring to the REFLECTION not the reflecting object- that is the 'REFLECTION ITSELF) This Buddhist path is posited as the ultimate refinement of the Upanishads which already contain the concept of "MAYA" - that which is and is not and neither is nor is not. For this reason Buddhism posits 'JATI" or rebirth and not reincarnation. That is the being who is reborn is neither the same nor different from the being who previously passed away.

There is an amazing documentary over 30 years about the complete reincarnation of H.E. the lama Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. The movie was made by Mr. Kuby who already made the famous "Living Buddha" about H.H. Karmapa's rebirth in 1992. Cleared a lot of my questions about rebirth and so on: vimeo.com/ondemand/lookingforasign I'll share the link if anybody is also interested to watch how a reincarnation from past life to next life works. The movie shows the same person in two lifes for the first time ever i think.

Can there be rebirth without transmigration ( of soul)? Even the lamp analogy does not help me. Buddhist texts operate on two levels of description: the conventional truth and the ultimate truth. The contradiction disappears when you realise that anatta (the non-existence of self) is an ultimate truth, while the rebirth is a conventional truth. In other words, Buddhists believe that people linked by a chain of rebirths may be said to be "the same", by the same convention as when a 40-year-old person is said to be "the same" as an 20-years-old person he evolved from. This convention has nothing to do with the fact that there is no indivisible and constant "I", that is according to Buddhism. The 40 year old person knows that he was the same 20 year old person can be easily explained by a constant and everlasting "atman". Athman is the constant witness . Your body and mind constantly change but not the "atman" . If you do not believe in "atman" or soul, it is hard to explain the transfer of karma and rebirth, you have to deny rebirth also .

I don't think Theravadins believe people like HH 14th Dalai Lama, or HH 17th Karmapa are enlightened. Don't take my word for it. Theravada does not hold those two persons as the leader of Buddhism.

Buddhism posits 'REBIRTH" JATI", not reincarnation. The being who takes rebirth is neither the same nor different nor different and the same from the being who previously passed away.

The answers are revealed as enlightenment. In the end, all enigmas are solved. That's the end of delusion. When we get there, we get the answers. There we understand the actual natures of the Four Noble Truths.

You ask questions that all come back to the same thing: What is consciousness? In Non Duality teachings/philosophy this is incredibly pertinent. We have made (generally) an assumption of consciousness being a symptom of the mind, a result of having intelligence, it could well be argued(and indeed is) that consciousness is not what it seems, that it is not a personal creation and in fact exists regardless of our claiming it. Nothing exists, as far as we can tell, outside of consciousness, it is possible to argue therefore that awareness/consciousness is everything and all. There is no reason to believe that consciousness is not present without us, it is our arrogance that claims we are responsible for it. Check out some advaita vedanta talks, be prepared to change how you view the universe : )

Dear Pineapple Advaita Vedanta is indeed a close relative of Buddhism albeit not quite a match. One of the Great Ones, Shri Rahmana Maharshi noted that "that which does not appear in deep sleep even now is not REAL. And so he was speaking of an "I" consciousness that remains in Nirvikalpa Samadhi. And so a singular entity , The Atman appears too exist. However , we Buddhists do not stop there and look at that remaining 'I" We find that while yes, it does always appear, its appearance is a mere reflection like a reflection in a mirror. That reflection when examined is found to be dream like and itself not real. The Buddha gave various for the SELF and one is "the REFLECTION of the Moon on a clear still nighttime lake reflected" Although he noted that "to that lake the moon never came.

Dear Pratik Your questions are well reasoned and expressed. What you may be ignoring is the conflation of science and Buddhism. Science by its *OWN THEORY* requires an objective referent and it may be immense or tiny. Suggest that you review the Modern theory of science that is an update of the agreement between science and theology that framed at the time of Descartes about 400 years ago. The explosion of modern and wonderful science followed. However, Art, Music, Literature a nd Metaphysics are all *Subjective* posits and nowise subject to Objective constraints. A work of Homer or Goethe is not a star cluster. Buddhism is purely subjective and truly speaking is a MIND science, *not* a brain science. It is aimed at end of suffering not any OBJECT. If you respond I will be happy to continue a very friendly conversation and endeavor to answer your questions as well as I am able to do so.

Dear Pineapple. Your comments are fine. However, I wonder just why you are responding on this Buddhist site? I myself had many years as a student of Vedic philosophy at there New York City branch of the London School of Economic Science. We are philosophically under the aegis of an Indian Master teacher, of of the great Shankaracharya tradition. However today I practice Buddhism and have a Tibetan Lama as my GURU. Buddhism is nowise removed from the Vedic traditions and yet neither is it the SAME. W e posit liberation not as UNION with the *SELF*, rather freedom from the Self. Those of us who practice Buddhism would now use recommend visiting a site to find something that is designated w with a basis of designation that is found to be empty of inherent existence when looked for Buddhist meditation going back 2600 years. The Buddha in his night of enlightenment found that the universe is created by the meeting of Karma and arising conditions.

What's so confusing ? It's illogical only if nothing is carried forward to the next life or if someone or something can controls it. Think of Einstein's energy transformation theory. It's natural, nothing controls rebirth or karma but you can control your own life, refer to the 4 Noble Truths and the Noble 8 Fold Path.

The word 'EGO" is really Western. What equivalent are you suggesting in PALI or SANSKRIT? The Buddha confused? Duh. Somehow his teachings have lasted 2600 years and have been studied all over the world and practiced with great joy. You can find courses at all of the world's best universities and vast literature and commentary. Buddhism is amazingly profound and far beyond mere elimination of ego. Suggest good sir that you do some serious digging over time and find out for yourself.

Mindy........ selflessness doesn't mean you don't exist. ... creator is creation. "I" is refer to ego which is created in the mind not by soul. Two different things. In order to reach enlightenment we do have to pass through veil of ego. So it's the egoistic "me" doesn't exist but soul does.

You are merely addressing ideas not anything that can be made subject to observation. . And no 'I" also refers to Atman and it is negated by the Lord Buddha. The Buddha is telling us that the world exists interdependently and that it is created by Karma interacting with causes and conditions.

Hi Shaimpy. Hope you get to read this and my prior comment. As an additional aside, my question to you is to ask just where would you find this 'SOUL" that you say exists? And if you respond please do 'DEFINE" the word 'SOUL". I am nowise certain that all mean the same thing when they speak , SOUL". Neither 'CREATOR" nor 'Soul" is found in Buddhism and the Buddha gainsaid the idea many times over 45 years of teachings that total about 200,000 pages of written talks.

What creator ? Who or what is that ? It's illogical to believe in a Creator if you believe in Einstein's energy transformation theory. You can't create energy out of nothing and you can't destroy it into nothing too. So rebirth makes sense

Impossible. Your good comment contains an innocent assumption. Buddhism is not speculative and rather find out for yourself. What a s summation have you made? Suggest you give this question some reflection. Hint. You are suggesting that consciousness is created by ------ and exists temporally within -------. Another question good sir would be just how might a man know one opposite and not be aware of its twin? For example, how might a man know of UP and not know of DOWN? only ignorance can prevent the arising of this knowledge. Buddhism is a means of discovery and transcending both opposites.

partially wrong explanation one can only explain correctly who has been enlightened .awareness and consciousness is different.awreness simply means get conscious about his or her own existence. consciousness created from awareness.when buddha went beyond all aggregates means he went beyond time there was still one pure awareness that's who we really are even buddha acknowledged it, so awareness cant be changed because in that space there is no time and space even we can't say literally that's that pure awareness beyond time and space is we really are because when we are speaking we are speaking within time and space and real self is beyond time and space so difficult to describe only can be perceived that why buddha always kept silent when he was asked such types of questions such a wise and genius absolutely perfect
