What happens after Japanese language school? In today's video I talk about and introduce different ways in which you can continue your journey in Japan after graduation from your language school! As I have studied at a Japanese language school I have seen many students going in different directions, and so in this video I share personal experienses as well as my observations from other language school students around me. I hope this video will be helpful and that you learned something you didn't know before!!
I should say that I am no expert on visas or more specific situations you might face, so I'm afraid I might not be able to give the best advice regarding some of these things! But if you have any questions and you think I might be able to answer, please leave a comment down below or write to me on instagram!

Just when i made a post on reddit 2 days ago asking about how important is it to have a degree while in Language school i now see this! Im still not sure if i want to go to a language school but if i do id want to do it for fun and to use the language to work in a company in my home country. Though i might be tempted to use the language school to get into my dream university ICU Tokyo

I am going to complete my BSc in Mechanical Engineering(A 4 years program) in this year. I have decided to go to Japan for language school. Definitely going the vocational school route, after 1.5 years of language school. Also, what do you think about my schedule? I've already paid for everything and those are the dates and programs. Wowww that looks hectic!! 😂 That’s really cool that you’ll get to experience different parts of japan too! One tip for you though is to maybe have some self studying material too since you’ll probably jump a lot between different books in the different schools, so it might be both helpful and a relief to have some study material that you can continue to use throughout! But yeah that sounds like fun!!

What do you think about the website Take Me To Japan? I found them first, they're supposed to help you get into a language school. I think I could only do a 3 month one. I'm not sure how much money I'd end up needing for getting there, paying for the schooling, and where you live and how you get food. I can't imagine being able to afford college/uni though. I work at Amazon and I don't know if I'll be able to use the Leave of Absence for this. So its like, you have to save a lot of money and have enough left over for when you leave Japan and then find a job. It feels like I'd have to quit Amazon to go, especially if I ended up being in Japan longer than 3 months. Its easy to get into Amazon though. Like, how much does it cost to go to the vocational one and the 4 year one? I mean, 1 year of language school costing $10,000 is already a lot. If I went to language school for 1 year, how much money would I probably end up using total including where I stay, food, transportation, and whatever else?

Hey Johanna, just found your channel through Kemushi's video :) How did you like studying in Fukuoka? I've been pretty set on the idea of moving to Osaka, but Fukuoka sounds interesting. Is it more laidback than Osaka? Also how easy did you find it to meet new friends outside of other Gaijin? I plan to live in Japan long-term so I'm probably going the Uni route after Language School, but I also owe some student loans back here in the US.. So we'll have to figure that out lol. Did you do student loans or have some money saved up for University? Sorry for all the questions haha

Thank you for your comment!! I loved studying in Fukuoka! The food is great, everything is very accessible and it’s easy to get around in the city, doesn’t get overly crowded and the people are super nice! I haven’t spent that much time in Osaka, but I do think Fukuoka might be the most relaxed “big city” in Japan! As for finding Japanese friends I didn’t struggle at all (my main meeting places were my language school, church and jut friends of friends), and I also had some Japanese friends from when I lived in japan when I was an high school exchange student! I had money saved that I used for my language school, but for uni I’m using loans from Sweden to cover the costs! Not ideal but an investment in my future in japan!!

Do I have to take the EJU exam in order to enter a university there even tho I have N1 JLPT? Plus is it really necessary to have an English exam like toefl even tho I’m fluent at English ?

If the school asks you for it (which most schools do) then yes! JLPT is only proof that you can speak Japanese, but you still have to show that you have knowledge about other things too! And if you’re not from a native English speaking country and the school asks for a diploma from an English exam, you’ll have to take it to show your abilities!

Hey! Yes you can! You’ll be able to both apply for a job and continue studying for a masters with a bachelors degree!

I have my bachelor's so I guess I could get a master's after or maybe go to a vocational school...but i promised myself not to go back to school because I hated American school so much, then again maybe japanese schools are different and don't take advantage of you. I heard they aren't expensive too. This is stressfull because I want to go to japan to have the living experience but at the same time if I want to stay any longer than 2 years I'd have stay in school or get a job. if i get a job at a Japanese company then I'd have to go to a high intensity language school like Akamonkai. there's no way you can go from barely speaking Japanese to being business fluent and able to get a job in 2 years unless you go to a high intensity language school. If I go to a high intensity language school then I won't be able to ENJOY my 2 years of time in Japan, so it could potentially just make me stressed out for no reason if I just end up not even getting a job. I might as well stay in the states if I'm goign to still be stressed out if I go to Japan. I could be wrong. does anyone have some input?

Compared to American schools they probably aren’t THAT expensive, but definitely not cheap either! I think that even if you went to a high intensity school you’d still have time to enjoy japan, even if it’s busy it never gets THAT busy in a language school (well in my experience I guess). You only have classes around 4 hours a day, so there will be time for things outside of homework too! It’s hard to know how it’s gonna be if you don’t actually do it though so I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think going to a high intensity school would make your experience less enjoyable! Why would so many people apply to akamonkai then? I think you don’t have to worry that much about it, but that’s just my five cents!

They don’t have any rules for that, I think any amount of years is acceptable! However, I’ve read that if you have a certain amount of years then you have to write and motivate why you want to go back to study!

If you want to work in Japan, i definitely recommend you to learn the language first, either in your own country or in a language school here!

As far as I saw when my friends applied to senmongakko was that most required N3, while only a few said they wanted N2!

Hey hi, hope you’re doing well! I wanted to ask about the student visa. After graduating from Language school (2 years duration) the student visa also would expire, in order to continue living in Japan and to find a job which visa would be applicable for that? I have heard that work visa is sponsored by the company which selects you but until I don’t find job I want to keep on giving interviews so for that time can student visa be extended or is there any other type of visa which I should apply for?

Hello, thank you and I’m doing absolutely fine right now! I hope you’re doing well too! ☺️ So, if you enroll in your language school in April and apply for a 2 year visa, your visa will be valid until June/July of the year you graduate! So, you do have some time to find a job even if you didn’t manage to find one before graduating. The best would of course be to find something before you graduate, so that you don’t have to worry about it after you finish your language school program, but even if you don’t manage to you still have a couple of months to search after your graduation! Like I mention at the end of this video though, you won’t be able to work part time after you graduate (so officially when the school writes you out as a student, which is often at the end of the month you graduate)! That’s important to keep in mind. Other than that there is a visa called “designated activities” you can apply for that lets you stay here for up to 6 months while looking for a job, and I believe that you can work part time while on that visa!

If you want to work in a Japanese company where the language used is Japanese, you probably need around N2 level japanese!

I just found you through that Gogo Nihon video 😂 Actually I want to enroll to FFLC. Fukuoka looks like an awesome livable city. I was wondering if you know whether there are full time job opportunities for foreigners in Fukuoka? I'm afraid there won't be many if I move here. I only plan to study for one year and have jlpt n3 and a bachelors degree already, but I haven't seen whether FFLC supports one year students too. At least they say they do for baitos. Maybe you know since you'd live in Fukuoka!! 🤞🏻

Hehe yay, it’s me! 😂 Good question!! I’m not confident enough to say either yes or no since I don’t know a lot about the working environment in Fukuoka, but it is definitely an “international city”, and I have friends from my language school who found work there after they graduated! And yes, your mentor and the school staff will help you if you ask for help! In the second year we get information about job fairs, university applications etc, and I’m assuming that you will be placed in a class together with second year students since your Japanese level is quite high, so you will probably get all the same support as the second year students do!

Well of course I personally can’t guarantee anyone that they will get a job even if they have a degree 😂 But yes, you are eligible to get a work visa if you have a bachelors degree! Some people who have a degree still proceed to vocational schools because they want more time to study before they find a job, but I’d just tell you to start searching while your in your language school and ask your teachers and school staff for advice and to help you!

Well first of all let me just start with that this video is very informative thanks very much for that! 😄 Secondly i had a question related to the video which is . 1).will i be able to get into a vocational scool after 1 year of language school or do i have to study for 2 years to be eligible 2)..what if one already has a uni graduate degeree but has no/ or may b one year of a prior job experience and went to japan to a language academy for only a year afterwards want to land a job directly without going to a vocational school is it possible?

Thank you for your nice comment! ☺️ You don’t have to study for two years, one is enough! However, it still depends on your language skills. Most vocational schools ask for N3/N2, and you’ll have an interview/test to check your language abilities as well! So the amount of time you spend in language school doesn’t matter, as long as you have the required language skills! It is possible in that you have the requirements to get a job visa! I can’t say too much about it since I don’t have a lot of experience/knowledge about this, and I don’t know what field you have a degree in/want to work in, but it is definitely possible! Again, you will have to meet their language requirements (for jobs most places ask for at least N2), but it doesn’t sound like a problem for you!

I actually wanted to start my career in japan as an english teacher! and as far as i know! this is the Only field where u don't have to write a " japanese format cv" neither u have to have a lot of Japanese for that matter but its definitely good to know some bcuz duh! And what are the advantages if a student comes with n4 level in language school?

I think you sound very qualified to get a job here based on the information about your education and experience in your comment! However, most companies here will ask you for at least N2, in some cases N1, so you should get at least N2 to make sure you’ll get a job here! Well, if you have some knowledge already you will likely be placed in a class that skips the very basics, which means that you’ll have a head start and be able to advance more during your program than you would have if you started as a beginner!

It depends on what you want to do! Do you speak Japanese? If you want to study animation you probably need to have at least N3 (to go to a vocational school)! Or do you want to start working in animation right away? One way to go about it in that case could be to come as an English teacher, that would give you the chance to look more into what you want to do here while working and earning money at the same time! I know many people use English teaching as their first “door” to come to japan and eventually moving on to what they actually want to do!

There isn't any exam you have to pass in your language school (everyone is at a different level!), the main exam you have to be concerned about is JLPT 😹

Totally depends on the university! I could say an amount, but that'll differ depending on what university you're looking at, so it's probably better to look at the university you're interested in for accurate info!

Hey! Yes, you can work up to 28 hours if you have a student visa! And yes, if you don't have years of work experience in the field you want to work in (I don't know how it would work in that case 100%) they require you to have a bachelors to get a work visa. That's the main reason I started to go to a uni here!

If you have a degree and years of experience on top of that, I think I sounds like they’d be able to sponsor your visa! Granted that you speak Japanese on the level they need/expect as well!

@@johannakatakana Yes i am intending to apply for 2021 summer admission. The school says that their regular course doesn't necessary prepare students for JLPT, but encourages students to attend their part time evening course if they want to pre for JLPT. I wonder why, maybe the school places emphasis on conversational skills?

Hey. If i have a bachelor in business, and do a language school for 1/1.5 years after getting the degree. Do you think i will be able to find a job there while getting fluent in Japanese? What do you think? Some people advised me to take a degree in Japanese language. What would your advice be for me? I don’t know where to start and what the best course of action would be 😣. I am already 21, :( but it’s my dream to go there and i would love your advice. Awesome video!

I’m sure you’ll be able to find a job, as long as you learn enough Japanese while in your language school! Do you know any Japanese already? If you start from zero 1 year might not be enough for you to get up to the level that most companies would require, and I always recommend going the full two years if it’s possible! But yeah, if you have a degree I don’t see why you wouldn’t find a job! Options might be a bit limited at first (I don’t know too much about it though since I haven’t done it yet myself) but you’d definitely qualify for it on paper! So yeah, if you already have your bachelors then come here, get your Japanese level up and look for a job, that sounds like a good plan! Also, don’t worry about your age, I started university at 22!

johannakatakana thank you so much for answering. Feeling so lost right now at the moment on what to do. Is a degree in Japanese language or business better to find a job when i get there? The degree in Japanese would help me get a head-start on the language, but i wouldn’t have other skills except the language after the language school in Japan. Can I ask you what degree did you choose to get? Also, after 3 years at university (I meant in my country), 2 years of language school there sound so expensive. Not in the way of living expenses and the tuition fee of the school. But what really demoralized me is the money you have to show for getting the student visa. I saw that for a year they want you to show around 17k already (school tuition and living expenses not included) right? Wow :( Btw you are really kind and thanks for helping. I’m doing my best to figure out what to do. What do you think? Sorry to bother! Ps: (i did not start to study Japanese yet, only decent at speaking and listening)

Personally I think a business degree would be better since as you said, you would be more limited if you only chose to study Japanese. If you want to work at a translator or something that is directly connected to the language then it would be a good idea to get a Japanese degree, but if not then going for the business one would be the better option in my opinion. I’m majoring in media and communication! Tv, radio, filming & editing, PR, social research etc is mainly what I’m studying! I think you should start studying Japanese already, because the more you know before enrolling in a language school the faster you will be able to advance to a business level, and then you might not have to spend the full two years in a language school! Good luck with everything!!

johannakatakana thank you a lot for your advice! Yes studying Japanese on my own and getting the business degree at the same time seems difficult, i’ll do my best. Is studying my degree in business in my language (Italian) change anything? I would have to study here for 3 years and then do a language school. Wow media and communication bachelor? Very nice! You are doing university directly there right? You did language school for 2 years after high school and then started uni there right? Wow!

I don’t see why it would be a bad idea! Why do you think it would? If you need to save money it would of course be better to work for a while before going to language school, but I don’t see why it would be a bad idea if that’s what you want to do! ☺️ I worked for a year and then went to language school, and then straight to uni after that!

@@johannakatakana thank you for your response! This really helps me a lot. I actually came up with a new idea. I could go to language school for no more than 9 months and then go back home to get my bachelors. It would work as a great “gap year”. I already have a significant amount of money saved up and also have a summer job that pays well. Language school doesn’t start until January, so that gives me plenty of time to work.

@@ZERO-tb8du life took a turn. I’m about to be 20 now, and I’m in my 2nd year of community college. Decided not to study abroad because of the money. Instead, I started cc and worked part time. Figured out I wanted to study engineering and here I am pursing it. Still want to go to Japan, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My job opened up so many great opportunities for me. I was finally able to get a car I’ve wanted since middle school not too long ago and met some amazing people. I don’t really find myself studying the language as much as I used to, but still keep in touch if one online friend from Japan. We always send each other snacks and gifts :)

is it really the end for people who don't have bachelor's degree to get a job in Japan?

If you have years of work experience or can figure out a way to do freelance work, then I do think it’s hard to find a job. I know people who got employed with a vocational school degree (taken in japan), but in most cases a bachelors is needed!

@@OfficialDinvention I got into a Japanese school, studied for 1.5 years and now I’m working in Japan. But working for temporary staffing agency here is definitely not it

The biggest problem in the Japan is the language. If you know Japanese and have a Bachelor degree from another country you don't need anything else.

@@johannakatakana I have 2 bachelor degrees and struggling to find work at the moment. My Japanese is around N4. I have a part time job but getting a sponsored visa is a completely different story...

@@johannakatakana I work in healthcare in my country but I can't do so in Japan because I don't have a medical licence here. I am applying for teaching jobs but even those are not as easy to get / not many of them around. Any good websites you could recommend?
