Id like the explanation of how an overfilled tank would cause damage to your engine its bs. Your car has a fuel pump which pumps fuel to the engine the engine uses the fuel it needs and the return line returns the extra fuel back to the tank

I guess I've been lucky. I've done this for many years on all my vehicles, some of which I've put over 200, 000 miles on (I drive a lot). After reading a lot about this though I recently stopped and now do one click, however I never thought doing that filled my cars all the way and the needle always moved down faster than if I overfilled. As if it wasn't filled enough. With the overfill the needle stays on full for a lot longer. But I've always done multiple clicks. My method was to fill it till it clicked then leave it sit for a couple of minutes (letting it settle/lose its head) making note of exactly how many gallons it stopped at. Then I start filling again. It usually goes a pretty good amount at this point. When it clicks I stop and wait again...maybe a minute or less this time and start filling again. I watch the fuel pump to to see how much is going in and I typically stop at 1 -1 1/2 gallons extra. I used to do 2 gals but eventually stopped at 1 or a bit more. Especially on long trips. Figure if you get 30 or 35 miles per gallon that's an added 60 miles or more. After filling that way I was always able to drive a long distance and the needle would stay full or move slow. If I did one click it moved down faster....much faster. As I said I never had a problem after doing this for years. However I stopped doing this very recently.

this is not a troll. for some reason they didn’t properly explain the damage that can happen to the emissions system. most modern vehicles have a charcoal canister that is designed to capture excess FUMES where they will then be re-routed and burned in the exhaust system. when you pump gas past the click you will pump raw FUEL into the canister, destroying the charcoal material inside. this doesn’t happen if done once or twice but if continually done you will ruin the canister. the part can cost in some cases as much as 4 to 5 hundred dollars to replace. most importantly there is no reason to pump an extra dollar or few cents into your vehicle to make an even sale because it may cost a lot more to fix. stop pumping at the click, it is smart and may save you an unnecessary repair down the line.

Over filing the gas tank, causes you to lose the air that's SUPPOSED to be in the tank for proper pressure. It just over works your pressure regulator, and can lead to early failure. Second, it can cause raw fuel to enter the charcoal canister. The canister is only supposed to hold fumes. If it becomes flooded it can keep the car from starting. It won't damage your engine, but the last time I bought the, the cheap option was 265$.

I had an issue today where the pump never clicked and I was facing the pump wondering why is my car taking so much gas. To then realize that the tank was overfilled and the gas started leaking on the ground. My tank has a small hole where gas comes through if overfilled so I'm hopeful that was helpful in minimizing damages. For future reference I'll take note on how much gallons I need at half and quarter tank. I was scared to start the car but once I started driving I didn't want to push it, and tried my best to drain the excess gas. Luckily by the end of my drive my mpg range and fuel meter started decreasing again. I drive a 2018 civic in case anyone is wondering.
