Find out what’s happening in the brain when you have a migraine and what we still don’t know about this complex disorder.
--
A throbbing, pounding headache. Bright zigzagging lines across your field of vision. Sensitivity to light, lingering fatigue, disrupted sleep. While an incapacitating headache is one of the most common symptoms, a migraine can include any of these experiences. So what exactly is a migraine? And what causes it? Marianne Schwarz explores what we know- and don't know- about this complex disorder.

calling it a headache is like the worst understatement related to migraine. The pain is literally like if someone had put pieces of broken glass in your head and then shoke it. That, combined with an extreme difficulty to speak, stains in your vision, and when it ends there's a hangover effect that can last for days. Edit: Later in life I discovered that if I do a lot of physical activity + drink coffee during the day that's like a 100% trigger for my migraine.

I'm 17 and I've had migraines since I was 6 or 7, I was diagnosed with chronic migraines only last year after they were becoming more severe and in a pattern. I take medication but it doesn't always help, I use an app that helps you track your attacks and symptoms and triggers It's really useful especially if you want to keep up with your doctor or just to get to know the nature of your migraines better. I really sympathize with anyone who struggles with migraines because the pain is so severe sometimes I wonder of it'll ever stop. Reading the comments it's weirdly comforting to know that I'm not alone and a lot of people actually understand what it's like. I heard that attacks lessen as you get older and I hope that's true.

I was eight (8) when I first diagnosed for migraine, and now I am 28. It is become a part of my life and routine already. Once or twice in a month I will surely know that it is the time for the pain to hit me harder and drown me in agony. Whenever I say that I got migraine, some will comment like "just headache, so what?", "okay, don't think about it" or some literally won't understand what it is happening to me inside, even myself not sure about it too. I always wish to dismantle my head and separate from my body and re-attach once the pain goes off, yeah, it is strange! Only the person who enduring the pain for 20 years; ME, know the exact affliction. The worst part of the pain attack is when I am out of my home and not able to isolate myself; at workplace, playing football, school, exams hall, enjoying my vacation or having good time for myself. It strikes unannounced most of the time. I tried and still trying few medications and suggested treatments, but the outcome is still the continuous bursting pain inside my head. During my migraine pain time, I usually isolate myself, keep the environment dark, avoid human interaction (but still have to do due to the environment), drink more water, head shower to ease the burning sensation and many more, and unfortunately the pain still will be there for 48 hours or so on. With the hope I am expecting there will be a cure for migraine as soon as possible. I don't wish anyone to suffer from this pain, even my enemies.

All those moments when I felt useless and literallyprayed to die, so the agony would end. The misunderstanding of people around you, no escape from shame and guilt because you can't do anything about it rather than hide in darkness to fight this internal battle once again. Identifying and understanding my triggers have helped me avoid frequent attacks. My trigger includes" 1. light (flash/ fluctuating lights), 2. Sweets, 3. any sharp smell (particularly cigarette smell, petrol, kerosene), 4. Anger." These include my few triggers, most importantly, I have identified even if I laugh hard, or cry I am prone to attacks. All in all, I would suggest trying meditation, trying to keep yourself hydrated, getting proper sleep, and being strong. I would also like to appeal to spread awareness about migraine. It's not just a headache.

It's worth looking into this more - I went to a symposium by the top neurologists here in the UK and realised that a lot of what we think of as triggers are actually early symptoms or prodrome. This even includes food cravings which are part of the migraine not the trigger and aggression or anger. It made me understand a lot more what is happening for me during migraine. I also discovered "anorexia" can be a symptom, so I know if I am getting fussy about food this can be an early warning sign and if I can make sure I eat every few hours that helps me to avoid the worst dips. Sometimes the symptoms can come 2-3 days before the main part of the migraine. Exhausting!!!

I’m 41 and I have had migraines almost daily since I was a kid. I have seen so many doctors of almost every speciality and have been through every possible pain killers some of which have made more damage to other body parts than the migraines did to me brains I guess and I was hospitalized because of these painkillers. Only last year when I accidentally used one of those cold/ hot pads on my upper back and neck to relieve some muscle pain I had. To my surprise I didn’t have any migraines for the next 3-4 days the thing that never happened on my life before. Since then I use these pads on my upper back and neck whenever I feel I have a migraine. I also notices that the trigger point on this area are never the same and I always have to use two pads, one on the trigger point (I ask my wife to keep pushing with her finger till I identify it) and one pad on my neck to whichever side the migraine feels to be coming and leave it there for some time. This have made my migraines a LOT less to hardly once a month as long as I keep watching and using these heat/ cold pads. I hope this might help someone who has same type of migraines like mine.

If you can take a shower and make sure it's warm but not hot, close your eyes and let the warm water hit the back of your neck, it loosens up your neck and muscles in your head and can help significantly sometimes even gets rid of it for me. I'm dealing with a migraine right now and this video gave such an accurate description and really helped me understand what is going on when I have a migraine. Today around 11am I started having auras, and it spread to where I couldn't see out of my left eye for an hour. I ate lunch and stood up and the headache hit me like a train. At one point it was difficult to speak and I felt sick to my stomach and any noise or light was unbearable. Its 830pm now, and my head is still hurting, but not like before. I totally relate to the part that talks about coughing or bending over. Its like my head is gonna fall off and of course I'm in the midst of getting over being sick.. so the occasional cough and sneeze is awful. I didn't realize there could be potential warning signs of a migraine, but now looking back I noticed yesterday I was SO thirsty. I even said out loud "I can't stop drinking water." Then at one point I noticed my face was super red hot and flushed. It felt like a mini fever in my cheeks and I was incredibly tired... so now I can keep an eye out for the warning signs. Ugh.

My migraines are debilitating and knock me out for a whole day or two. They had started impacting my personal and professional life immensely. With the help of a good neurologist, I charted my migraines closely for a while and was able to identify 3 main triggers - disturbed sleep/lack of sleep, heat and bright light. I made certain changes to my lifestyle based on this info.eg. No early morning flights/travel plans, no ultra late nights, investing in a very good pair of dark sunglasses, always staying cool & avoiding the outdoors on a hot day etc etc. I anticipate my triggers now and avoid them as much as I can. This has helped me a lot and I've managed to reduce the number of headaches. Yes, its a pain and I miss out on some events BUT nothing is worth getting a migraine.

For me, migraines have become slightly lesser since the time I changed countries. Back in India, I used to have migraines everyday after returning back from uni. The light of the sun used to hurt my head and made me puke so much. Since the time, I'm in the UK, it has certainly lessened a lot. Also now as I know what are the triggers for my migraine, I make sure to stay away from loud sounds, noise, bright lights, strong smells, changing temperatures or anything to make me sensitive. Even crying gives me a migraine.

I learned that the very hard way . I still don’t really function on the medication but at least the headache subsides enough i can pass out . My symptoms included high sensitivity to light and sound, intense headache that I can't sleep off, and puking. And because I'd puked, I thought maybe it has something to do with digestion/food. I started to keep better schedule of meals and not skip our delay them. Few times it has happened that I felt the episode coming so I went and had some food. And it worked!!! Now I only get these when I have spent a long time in a high simulus environment (light, sound. Sometimes smell) Maybe it'll work for some of you. Give it a try. Don't skip your meal time.

I suffer of migraines and one of the earliest symptoms is a slight pressure and pain in my right eye. Then in the “third eye” and if I don’t treat it early, I am in trouble. I also get the light sensitivities. I noticed it was worse when under a lot of stress and my last job was very stressful. When I have them at a 100x, i throw up, i feel dizzy, my room has to be dark and in silence, i have to apply ice in my head, it feels like hammering in my brain. After is all done, I am literally sore for days. Like if I really hit my head. It is debilitating. Worse of all, people don’t believe you and they say is just a headache or they want you to come in to work.

I've had migraine since I was 8 years old, it's been 14 years now. It's really horrible for me, it made my life worse. Every time I have a migraine I pull my hair out, hit myself on the head, vomit, have auras, blind spots in my vision, even though I have taken painkillers when I see the aura appear but the terrible headache still occurs with me and it only reduces after 2 hours. It happens so often that sometimes I even think about suicide. After each pain, I fell into depression, despair. Really, migraines affect me a lot: I can't do plenty of things I really want, can't go anywhere , and can't have fun like my friends. I couldn't even go out into the wind because the wind gave me a headache. My childhood was full of migraines and I really don't want my youth to be buried by migraines anymore. I also went to many hospitals, took many drugs, but it only stopped for about 3 months and then it came back. I also tried to exercise, meditate, sleep at the right time, eat right, but the pain is only partially reduced, my head is still not good. I just wanna normal health like everyone but why it is so hard...... What can I do now??? 😰😰😭😰😰😰😰

Thank you for explaining that a migraine has a long building up phase. I found out that the reason for my migraines is that I did not fuel my brain with enough energy in stressful times and before my period. It needs a lot more food, better nutrients and more frequent meals so that my blood sugar levels never drop. Two burnouts caused this, the brain is transformed. A week before a migraine I feel empty and exhausted at the same time, so I stop my daily sport routine, I cannot articulate well and I am awake several hours at night. My vision gets worse and I smell vomit, everything has almost zero taste and all I want are citrus fruits. Take care of your brains, people, help them get everything they need!

I’m 41. I’ve had migraines most of my life. They got so bad last year that I had an MRI. They’ve gotten worse over the years. Completely debilitating at time. I’ve tried different medications and avoid triggers if I can. Mine are environmental: stress; when the seasons start to change, I get them; when it’s cloudy but doesn’t rain I get them; when it’s really hot outside, I get them. Sometimes they last for days or weeks. I have also started getting ringing in the ears as an aura. I have to sleep sitting up because laying down makes the pain unbearable. I recently bought a $3,000 mattress so that I can sleep more comfortably upright when a migraine strikes. It’s horrible and most don’t understand. I also suffer from depression and panic attacks. It’s all related.

I have migraines with much lesser frequency and intensity now as a result of practicing pranayam and Sudarshan kriya .Sometimes months go by without having a migraine depending on my lifestyle etc as opposed to before when i would feel like dying every other day or so with my migraines Please consider learning Sudarshan kriya from one of the programs you can find around you or online . Hope it gets better for you.

The ringing in your ears is a bad sign, make sure to take painkillers even if you don't think they do anything. I once tried to brave it out lol I now have permanent profound deafness in my right ear, that can only be fixed by putting an implant into my brain. The nerve that was damaged passes by the fright and flight centre of the brain and is triggers it 24 hours and day 7 days a week ... for the rest of my life, and nothing can fix it. On the up side, it's not a brain tumor, which is what they first told me I had.

@@faiznuranis25 I'm thinking that I will wait and see if some new technology gets invented, or some new stem cell research that might restore nerves, or something. If nothing like that happens I might think about the surgery when I'm older. It's not painful it's more that I'm in a state of fear all the time, because that part of the brain is being triggered. So I have tell myself all the time that it's the nerve and that I'm not in danger lol. And if there is any background noise at all I can't hear anything, even just running water. Idk life seems to be about learning how to cope, and that's what we do, we cope. Thanks for asking, I hope your migraines calm down 🦊

I used to have migraines when I was a kid before I hit puberty. It usually got me triggered whenever I got dizzy and so my symptoms came up: extreme headache, painful movements, unable to bear the light or loud sounds and the urge to vomit. Whenever I had these my parents immidiately layed me down in a darkened room, put in calming music or some audio children's tales. Learning from this video I think this is the reason why I need more liquid than avarage

For me, it's also a sensation to smell, any kind it doesn't matter but mostly strong ones such as coffee, cigarettes or perfume.

Me too. High school was miserable because people on the bus would eat bread (bagels and such) and for some reason those smells bother me so much when I get a migraine.

Same with me, strong smells often bring them on and weird light, I wear sunglasses all time, outdoors at least. When it's overcast outside is worst, and I want to punch people when they say "why do you have sunglasses on, Where's the sun!!!???"

happens to me too man. i’ll be staring at the board or whatever and then boom, there’s a little spot in your vision that you can’t see. panic, anxiety, and fear overwhelms you instantly. slowly the vision aura grows, taking over your field of vision. pain slowly begins to creep in, making you oh so desperate.

I first got migraines when I was around 12 years old, the kind where I would throw up from the pain. Then after a year they stopped coming, only to return again in my mid 20s. Now in my late 30s I only seem to get them on nights where I've had terrible sleep. I do not wish migraines on anyone, it's debilitating and those of you who suffer them regularly you have my sympathy ❤️

I was 10. I would also 🤢 from the pain, half of the time it would ease the pain and I’d have a nap to decompress from the mornings events. But it’s different now. I’m 40 and they’ve never stopped 😔 I’m not always nauseous but I feel the pain is much worse.

The nausea, relentless pounding and “pressure” in my head (it feels like my brain is too big for my skull) make it impossible for me to lie down or rest my head on/against anything. I end up pacing for hours in a blacked-out room like some zoo animal.

That sounds like cluster headaches; aka suicide headaches because they can be so unbearable and frequent. There is growing evidence microdosing psilocybin mushrooms can provide relief for several weeks to a few months.

My gf(26) had her first migraine last night, I’ve never had them myself thankfully. It looked like torture, swore her head was going to explode, throwing up, numbness, aura, the whole 9 yards. I sympathize for her and any one else who gets them. That being said she took 12.5mg of promethazine once she was throwing up and it seemed to at least stop the puking and allow her to sleep to some degree.

Been dealing with migraines myself for the past 2-3 years. It started out as a once per month episode, now I have to deal with it on a weekly and sometimes even DAILY basis. Whole right side of my face goes numb, eye turns red and starts tearing up and even my nose will start running. Also the sensitivity to light and generally speaking any kind of visual or audio stimuli is such a pain, I swear. I have had episodes where the pain was so unbearable I ended up banging my head against the door until getting an actual bump (no joke!). It is such a burden that I do not wish upon anyone to bear! Prize your health, people !
