I just LOVE seeing content like this Darren. A very honest appraisal of your running mindset at the start and its very encouraging and inspiring to see people actively changing what running COULD mean to them. The idea of fast packing for me is also really interesting and I'm certainly going to start getting together the gear to do it. Are you going to do a "what I learnt" type of video after this one in regards to kit and prep etc? Anyways, a really lovely put together video, and I really hope you do more of these in the future.. to create that spice of life! :)

Thanks Phil, I think we can get quite self destructive with running at times, or at least I was. But knowing and changing are two different things hence the change of activity, still going too fast for the weight but it will come. Not sure if I'll be doing a review of the kit or not, will see if its something people are interested in. Thanks for the comment.

@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning No probs. One last question - why was your nights sleep so bad?! Its the ONE thing that stops me from going all in and I struggle sleeping in tents!
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning 2 жыл бұрын
I tend to struggle with sleep and noise, but the tent was probably not put up correctly as it made a lot of noise in the wind and this kept me from sleep. When I go again I'll get more pegs to use more guidelines and try to make sure its as tort as possible to avoid so much noise.

Hello Darren. That was a top presentation. I'm 55 and started fast packing this year. Still putting kit together so it was interesting to see your choice. I ran sub marathon distances many years and frankly never got into hiking because the army put me off it. Fastpacking is different. You let the terrain dictate pace and therefore remain present in the moment constantly. The feeling of covering over 50km in a day and then being to camp is freedom. I do a lot of bodyweight training, recommend it to condition your back muscles. My legs need work as cramping sets in. Also, in Australia sunscreen and plenty water is a must. Your pace is brutal Royal Marine level.

Great to see you back Darren, love your channel. I guess I am lucky that I do not get bogged down with the numbers on Strava. Doing a recovery run at 13 min miles is great for me, but can see that you would struggle to slow down. Being competitive and a cracking runner comes with pressure to always be on your A game. Pleased to see you out enjoying the moors again and bet the two days were super beneficial.

When doing fast packing or long hikes, this is were I find the advantage of the high cushion shoes like Altra Olympus or New Balance Fresh-foam More Trail to have there place in long distance under weight. Great video I hope the knee doesn’t hinder your upcoming race…best of luck!

Thanks mate, best thing to do is have no expectations, plot a route you know and have a camp you know plus water sources etc, and don't feel pressured to run all the time (something I learnt in hindsight) would have enjoyed this much more had I accepted 10KG is too heavy to run the flats with.
@DM_RUNNING
@DM_RUNNING 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning did you get there late in the evening, I.e how much waiting around was there. But yes think I need to go with the no expectations and go for something a bit easier than I would otherwise do, a circuit of Munro's probably not the best idea 😅

Sorry didn't spot the question here, I got there around 4:30 but was surprising how much there was to sort, from getting dinner to finding patch to settle and setting up, was sunset before I knew it and actually felt a little rushed really.

Is the toebox of the vj ultra 2 bigger than the ultra 1? And do you find the ultra 1 more comfortable than the more durable ultra 2 as it doesnt have the rock plate?
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning Жыл бұрын
They have exactly the same mould so no difference in fit. Only difference is how the rock plate feels in the early miles for me. It just needs wearing in...for me the Ultra 1 isn't any good on rocky terrain after 200 miles so prefer the Ultra 2
@duncanbarnett

Great video, Darren. I know the weather made the run more challenging but it did give some wonderful shots of the views from the Cleveland Hills. I hope the knee heals well. How are you finding the VJ Ultra?
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Duncan, and you're right there certainly was a trade off between discomfort and the views for sure! Finding the VJ Ultra's really good, only reason I'm not wearing them more is to preserve the life lol...Great cushion, amazing grip and comfortable its just a question of if you need to half size up and they can run short for some. I got them true to size and they are just about OK, plus I don't like a loose fit so might need to try two sizes if you're considering.

@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning Thanks, Darren. I think I’ll give them a try. VJ is an interesting brand - I like the way they focus their efforts on a limited range. I do a lot of my running on various sections of the Cleveland Way so it’s good that they have performed well for you on this terrain. Well done again for the video, it was something quite different and really enjoyable.

A very interesting journey. Wouldn't it be advantageous to your body to pack much lighter? Say an UL bivy bag, no spare shoes, no cooking, a short pad, and so on, and especially NO watch! I mean, what the heck is the point of it all if it's not enjoyable?

Hey Bob, thanks for the comment its a cracking trail and I loved it even though the temps made things tough at times...in hindsight I should have slowed way down, to carry 10KG and try to run so much was naive on my part so give it a go! Think I got away with the knee but am having a few niggles in my foot and surprise surprise its on the same side so would be shocked if its not related. Hopefully will settle though thanks for asking

@DarrenSmithTrailRunning
@DarrenSmithTrailRunning Жыл бұрын
Hi, in all honesty you'd need to be training for years to do it safely especially if you have not run on the Moors much also. The body takes a long time to adapt and its not just the physical adaptation its the learning how to fuel also which all takes time.
