Yes, great sounding 2-channel amplifier...and was the factor in this incident. Original DC-300 with no relay protection. She has it now. Boom went the dynamite.

I have been connected with HI-Fi and Professional Audio for 60 years and I Have seen many speakers destroyed by both over driving and amplifier failure. An enthusiastic guitarist using a Sunn 1200S managed to turn two JBL D15S speakers into pie shaped paper cones. The voice coils held, but the cones were shredded. I lost a 15" JBl in my L300 Summits from a phase Linear flameout. One night at a nightclub, a BGW power amp destroyed a set of 4 Peavey Monitors with 12" Black Widow speakers when it failed. the band junked the BGW and bought a Peavey CS1200 amp as a replacement because the Peaveys had spear protection circuits in the event of failure. Fuses are a good idea for speaker protection, but something else that works well are incandescent light bulbs. For home use, a t3 Bulb # 562 will protect speakers, plus give a light show when they are pushed.

Yep, I saw a Phase Linear 700 burst into flames driving Dahlquist DQ10s which were about as efficient as a brick. I have also seen amplifiers go nuts and set crossovers on fire. Of course, the owner was higher than a kite when it happened on Cat Scratch Fever. Just a burnt hole where the crossovers for Acoustic Research AR11s once resided. When I know systems are going into dorms, in-line fuses are a must. Never tried a light bulb. In any event, thank you for taking the time to share your stories on my channel. Most appreciated.

Prepping for the oops factor? Hmmm... Besides alcohol induced "deafness" and folks overdriving their amps, what other factors lead to such outcomes, what caused the DC-300 to not have "relay protection"? Sorry Lou, I think you've gone out of my league of understanding.

Depending upon how the amplifier is designed, you can have output transistors short and create all sorts of havoc from cascade failure of the output stage to shorting of the rectifier stage. Back in the day and age of the DC300, there was very little protection in most amplifier designs.
