As a former ASE Master Auto Tech who worked for several major car companies, I want to say that you did a great job of making the video, and explaining it. Cylinder Leak Down Testing is a lost art, and can save the customer a lot of time and money, rather than just buying things like a new tensioner, timing belt, and water pump, only to find out that after you try to start it, there is further damage that goes beyond what it is worth to spend on the vehicle. Especially since there is a some chance (albeit small) of a crack or hole in a piston, and that gets expensive.. This is the right way to try and determine if there is any damage. Great job!

Thanks Oz, the info about the valves barely nicking the piston. My wife was convinced by the car dealership that we absolutely had to buy a new engine when all it really needed was new valves, cams, and a timing belt, I saved thousands. Honesty is what keeps customers. I hope your business grows exponentially because honest mechanics like you are rare.

Well, at least now I know what that hissing sound is with the engine running, thought it was a vacuum leak or a belt, RIP B18A1 you have served me well! (The Integra is still driveable, she just idles poorly, a real testament to how legendary these motors from Honda are in my opinion)

1995 honda odyssey 295,000 broke timing belt hwy.fix or dump? Have leakdown kit . Will release spring pressure and do leakdown . Orderd just timing belt to set all marks.tdc.balancer belt ok .should I pull head and repair or rip for van?

My timing belt snapped on me, I was going uphill about 25 mph. The car just stopped dead, it didn't move till it was on the tow truck. Do you think I have engine damage? And about how much would it cost to repair the engine? 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Hey my friend, I am dyer , I was ready to replace timing chain guide on 2000 bmw 540i , when I was ready to put the engine on top dead center, I turned the engine counter clockwise a few times. Should I replace the engine or send the head to to get repaire. I am not sure if I have some bent valve

So my timing belt snapped.....so do i have to line up the crankshaft sprocket, to its indicator and then line up the camshaft as well before i do a leak down test? Thnx, hope to get a reply.👍

i have a vw 2002 2.0 gas engine i put pepper where the oil go like a nut so i was driving then the car shut off and would not crank so a buddy put his computer on it it came up camshaft position sensor so i tryed to turn crankshaft by hand to put on top dead center 1 but the timing belt/sprocket would not move at can u tell me what could be the problem thanks for your time

one or two teeth , most likely not as long as it truly is just 1 or 2,, if you look up the timing belt info they may give you the max. amount of variance in degrees from spec. you have before interference with the piston occurs

oz I have a 2010 audi a4 2.0 t after a no start just crank over a shop diagnosed it with no compression I told him I suspect timing chain failure . no doubt the valves are bent . his advise was to replace engine but at +\_ $8000 I'm stuck . does this guarantee the bottom end is also fried ?

Carlos Irizarry if the engine has a bunch of miles I wouldn’t just do the top end. Rings might be on the end of their life.

Well done Oz for sharing info and keeping it real. Is it possible that a failed belt at idle speed will do no damage? Is it a good idea to replace a snapped cambelt and try a compression test to determine if cylinder pressures are good?

Alex Lintern most likely whenever you have a snapped belt on an interference engine you will have engine damage

Hey OZ . Thanks for this video . I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra 191000 miles was going to get the timing belt changed a week ago . Just before the holiday heard the scrapping kind of rattle sound like it was rubbing the cover. Then sure enough 5 degrees out side late at night coming home came to stop light and the engine dies . Interference 4.7L V8 . 99% sure it's the timing belt . My question is with this many miles do I fix engine and valves ? Replace engine ? Do I roll this truck into my driveway and take it on in the spring time myself ? Pretty handy and not much to loose at this point . Or sell it as is . The rest of truck has served me well . Changed the first timing belt about 90,000 miles . Thank for your help and info . Great video !!!!

Those engines will last for a long time. If you fell good about doing the job go at it if you don’t. Just don’t risk it. If you do end up doing it just take the heads to a good machine shop so they can do a valve job

Good video, bro, but you can hear the air coming out the intake or exhaust. I do the same test without the fancy gauges. I close the valves via removing the cam or rocker arms and apply direct air into the spark plug hole, then listen for leaks.

I have a 00 jeep 4.0 with one cyl misfiring I took out the spark plug and it was all covered with water corrosion, pretty good sign that have water leak trought a head crack or head gasket rupture, I check the inyector (swiped) and its working just fine, I checked the ignition spark and it does too , I put a head hasket/head crack fix quimical and looks like it did the work ( air bubbles not coming out on the radiator anymore) but still misfiring. I took out the spark plug and the injector wire and started the motor, but it looks like compressed water mist coming out like water still getting inside the cylinder (it was not gas mist, because the ignition spark was firing right at the spark plug hole and didnt make conbustion) besides that, the exaust expulse five times in a row and inhales one, that tells me that the exaust valve its bent, matter of fact. . the engine has been overheated and has been consuming water in that cyl. and pushing it out from the cooling system at the same time. But. . . I dont know anymore, I took out the thermostat so doesn't get too hot again, my next step is to check the piston compression.

00 jeep w 4.0,, im guessing very high mileage ? you would need to remove the head and send it out to a machine shop, and have it checked out and reconditioned,, new head gasket, and money ,,money ,,money, and after all that, i've found that when you freshen up the top end of an older, high mileage motor like that,within a few weeks or mos. the bottom end goes,,ie,, connecting rod knocks, mains ,,so, dont put good money after bad,,realistically, find yourself an engine, complete,,either reman or lowermileage used, that is assuming you want to keep the vehile

Hello, I just wanted to ask you if the 4.2l vortec engine on 02 trailblazer will bend valves when it jumps a couple of teeth? My exuast sprocket broke off and it would turn freely while the variable timing sprocket would turn with the chain. I fixed that issue, Got it back on timing. What is the compression psi avarage on these engines if you know? I did a compression test and I got an average of 125psi across all six cylinders dry test.

if its just a couple of teeth it shouldnt bend anything. that should be enough to turn on the engine

good and informative vid,, just one footnote, if you're going to remove the valve cover and the cam caps you could pull the camshafts out of the way enough or poss remove them completely and simply check the installed height of the valves, you may b able to visibly see one or more that are obviously lower at the top o the spring than the rest, may save some time,,belt pops at low rpm {idle} MABE,,there might b a chance but, if it happens at higher rpms ,,its usually game over for the valves and the head will need to come off,bla,bla,bla, you know the rest

Jose Sierra have to make sure that all wires are connected or make sure that the timing is straight on. Some imperfection would not cause the car to work.

You can put the camera in each cylinder to see if there was any valve/ piston interference.

With the cam bearings loose it is not pushing in the valves so the system is closed. But before you start make sure to set everything in time and make sure you know what you’re doing

Send heads off to get worked. Most of engine wear happens in the top.end if oil was changed regularly

Botshelo Tanki the engine could still start. You might just have a couple of valve damaged. But that still needs to be fixed

OZ IM WORKING ON 2.4 ECOTEC GM MOTOR AND WHEN I TOOK OFF THE VALVE COVER THE WHOLE RIGHT SIDE ON THAT CAM HAD BROKEN ROCKERS SO I PURCHASED ALL ROCKERS AND VALVE GUIDES I SET THE #1 CYLINDER THE UPPER STAGE I SET THE CAMS AT 2 OCLOCK AND 10 O'CLOCK AND EVER TIME I TRIED TO TIGHTEN THE BOLTS FROM TE MIDDLE AND WORK MY WAY OUTWARD AND AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE THERE STILL A GAP BETWEEN THE CAM AND ROCKER SO I KEPT DOING THE TIGHTENING SUPER SLOW PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS THE OWNER IS A GOOD PERSON WHO HAS KIDS AND SINGLE PARREN

You’ll know valves are bad when after testing for compression , and it’s low , if you pour oil in that cylinder and there is no improvement in compression, it means you losing it through the leaking valve/s, if it’s low cause of piston rings you’ll get improvement on compression, after pouring oil into it

So basically there is no chance for the engine to be good if the timing belt breaks when you have an interference engine.

Jose Zavalza not correct it all depends on what rpm the belt snap at..I had my belt snap at 7000rpm piston was fine I redid the head and new belt

So let’s say you don’t get any compress air at all then your engine is good and just change the timing belt and your water pump and you should have a brand new car . ?

If you have an interference engine and belt broke ther's a 99% chance some valves are bent. No need for this test if timing belt broke...

I have a 2004 kia sorento. The belt did not break but is loose. I put the code reader in and 10 codes came up saying misfire on the cylinders. Does that necessarily mean the valves hit?

So why dont all interference engines use chains and non interference use belt? My gf kia wants belt replacement every 6 years because they cheaped out now her engines blown because these companys are dishonest bastards, so many headaches could be prevented by simply making broken timing belts or interference engines a thing of the past

Hazel Cruz most all newer vehicles are interference engine due to how much more economical they are. There’s interference chain driven and belt driven
