Actually the EU laws about "user friendliness" are extremely strict and clear. There MUST be a "accept all" and a "deny all" button equally visible and easy to access, as well as an advanced button that leads to a STRUCTURED and easy to understand selection bit where you can act on individual purposes and on individual "vendors". That's it. 99% of sites are NOT compliant, including many public administration and government sites. But the rules do exist and are clear. All the "legitimate interest" stuff has been thrown in the mud several times by the European court, btw, so any site that displays something along those lines is most probably not compliant, too.

The point is. IT doesn´t always. some are very tricky by Placing the "accept all" in a clear visible color and "Reject All" if often easy to miss or placed at a point that you accidentally click on "Aceept All" Some News Paper in Germany go even more agressive. If you want reject then you will be redirected to a a Page where you have to enter your Full Name and get billings from them otherwise yoou have only 2 Choices. "accept them all" or Leave the Website

Oh for sure, they aren't compliant in a lot of ways, and the contact them button is often broken too. If the rest are automatically disabled, 2 aren't. And the cookies are still used before you even click accept or reject! Even denying all is hard, trying to find secret buttons and tell whether they're on or off because they made it vague af (the identifying device and store location ones unsurprisingly)

I've always wondered WTF is "legitimate interest" even supposed to mean - it sounds so blatantly *stupid* and is such an obvious grift to make you accept cookies when you think you're not, or more likely to make blocking them even more bothersome so you would give up and just click allow all. But can someone please explain what it's supposed to mean?

When last month google sites suddenly started showing a 3rd button to reject all, just as big and obvious as the accept all and customize button, I had a sneaking suspicion the eu got on their ass again. The whole situation is still far from perfect, but at least * something * is being done

I accept them all, but when the session is over and I close Firefox, I've set it to delete cookies from a long list of sites that I don't have accounts for, so don't need their cookies to stay logged in. Also, I briefly open Firefox once more after that and go through the most recent remaining cookies and delete the ones the automatic deletion missed. (But I leave the cookies for sites I want to stay logged in.) I really hope Firefox will stay around, because it's the only browser I'm aware of having such easy and detailed access to cookies.

pro-tip: a lot of websites hide their trackers behind "legitimate interest". this means that even if you click the "deny" button, they still place some (sometimes a lot) third party cookies because they interpret a loophole in the law very liberally. in theory, you should be able to reject their "legitimate interest" as well, but just use the browser's cookie blocking or an extension like ublock origin

How to get rid of intrusive cookie messages using inspect element: 1. Open inspect element by right clicking on the black area. 2. Delete the popup element. 3. If you can scroll, you're done. If you can't scroll, remove "overflow:fixed" or "overflow:hidden", usually found on the tag inside the "style" value (or it could possibly be hidden in a tag). You can also try changing it to "overflow:scroll". Usually it's not in the CSS file, because to display the popup, usually Javascript code is run and it's easier to modify the tag directly than to mess with the CSS file directly. And yes, if you only visit the page once or clear cookies often, this can actually be faster than manually de-selecting all of the options (but if the website has a "Reject all" button, use that instead). Keep in mind that if you refresh or go to another page, the popup will be displayed again.

If I remember correctly, the law does not mandate those annoying pop-ups. Technically you need a page like ToS or Privacy Policy or something similar to list what data you are collecting, especially if it's some private data. If you do not collect sensitive data in cookies - no need to do even that. The pop-up appeared as a way for website to cover their asses, in case some data is "leaked", because a lot of them do not care that much about security of the said data.

I know another kind of cookie banner which is used by many news pages... They don't have a reject button at all, for that you need to pay them... And rejecting specific cookies isn't even possible on these sites, you need to accept every cookie, including trackers... Sadly the EU doesn't care about that, they rather want to supervice every messenger "against child sexual material" by breaking end to end encryption... Every message needs to be decrypted on the device and must be sent to a centralized EU data center in the homeland... The best thing is that they introduced the GDPR in 2018 to prevent such things and now they want to breal their own laws....

Quora used to email me asking me if I still wanted to know something I searched for and some other weird uncomfortable stuff, I was wondering if it was cookies at the time

I like the idea of using Inspect or Developer Console to move the cookie-wall off-screen. But I doubt the sites disable any cookies anyhow. Like mobile apps, once you visit the site, they've already activated them.

i wish they at least made some universal cookie popup that would be used on all sites

What I really hate is how every website has these "accept all" cookies like they're expecting me to be back everyday. I just go on one time to look at a health thing, or a recipe, or a type of screw. Like hundreds of different things each day and everytime it tells me to accept all cookies!

the official EU website is one of the few websites that actually comply with the law properly. in theory, there must not be any dark patterns. the colours, size, font of the accept and deny buttons have to be the same.

I use an extension called cookie Auto delete that gets rid of any cookies once I leave a website. it's great because I can choose what website to accept and keep the first party cookies and obviously block all third-party cookies

When I was in Germany, those cookie popups were the thing I needed German the most for, since they weren't in English

Now I'm in the grey area when it comes to cookies now 🤔😶, I sometimes accept or reject them completely these day's.
