Dogs evolved those through selective breeding to have a more expressive face because humans have more empathy to animals with expressive "human" features. Wolves do not possess those muscles. It was advantageous for them because the cuter you are the more likely humans will take care of you

The sad confusion in his eyes followed by the foot stomp, then resigned acceptance of still receiving no pets and then trying once again for some pets.. he went through the whole cycle. Owner was very resolute to not give in to those soulful, sad eyes. I would have melted at the first stage itself.

I know that you didn't intend it this way, but I don't consider myself an 'owner'. My little girl is a friend, and she depends on me to take care of her like a child would. And she takes care of me with her love. I am not her master. I am her caretaker. And yes, I most definitely smiled. I see that face every day too. The difference is my girl is little, so she can get up on me and I am unable to ignore her :)

They just look at you with the most soul crushing stare and even start to lightly paw at you or set a part of their body on you. Makes me wonder what’s up with the current one my parents have. What a beautiful dog. Any dog that really loves you will do the same. Sometimes I think the bigger they are the more they exhibit this behavior. I’ve had a Boxer, a Rottie and English Mastiff that would give you those eyes and nudges till you finally relented. I loved knowing he wanted my attention and affection right now.

They're so gentle and never really move too erratically, even as young adults. Big dogs are best dogs (especially when they're extra furry), but as far as innate mannerisms are concerned, berners have what is my favorite personality type among all the big doggos. The greatest snuggle buddy you could ask for.

Luckily this boy is a mix. His mother is 1/2 Appenzeller mountain dog, which means he's a bit smaller than full Bernese dogs and it's kept him safe from diseases so far. He's almost 8 years old and his hips are just starting to get a bit rusty. That's his only problem so far
