What Happens When You Put Oobleck In A Vacuum Chamber? Does It Flow Slower?

In this video I put oobleck in a vacuum chamber. I have had a lot of requests to do this one. I talk about what a non-Newtonian fluid is and how it's not really that rare. Without a vacuum chamber I doubt that you would be able to ever see oobleck boil since it is a thickener for foods once it gets to boiling temperatures. Then at the end I show that I think the fluid flows slower under a vacuum when it is boiling than when it is not under vacuum.

I would love to see this done again in the bowl. But with a weight ready to drop. So when it boils you can release the weight and see what happens. Will the weight drop through like it's liquid or does it solidify up? You may need a high speed camera of course.

It would actually work the other way around. The more you "shake" the ketchup the smaller its viscosity. Non-newtonian actually just means exactly that: something that is not newtonian. Any behaviour that is not a linear relation between shear stress and deformation rate (newtonian) is automatocally non newtonian.

The reason the food coloring separated is probably this: It was dissolved in the water, which was probably saturated; as the water evaporated due to low pressure, the water remaining in the bowl became oversaturated with food coloring, so it started to separate.

Opposite. Oobleck is shear thickening, liquid becomes solid under stress. Ketchup is shear thinning, solid becomes liquid under stress. That's why it is lumpy in the bottle until you squeeze it, or piled up on the plate but smears around easily.

No a non-Newtonian fluid is just a fluid that does not follow Newton's law's of viscosity. For oobleck it's different because it hardens with more Shear Force, for ketchup it's the opposite so when you apply force to ketchup it becomes less viscous. You can actually see this with glass ketchup bottles. The way how people get ketchup to poor is by giving it a smack or a shake first, making the ketchup less viscous so it can poor easily.

It seems to me that the starch in the oobleck, when compressed, forces the water/air particles outwards faster than any other composition. I'M NO SCIENTIST, ok! And could you re-do it, but put a magnet on the lid locked by another magnet, then release it, to see its influence on the oobleck? If it sticks of sinks.

Could you do rapid decompression? If you added a second, 2-3x larger pressure tank (old propane or CO2 tank) connected to your chamber with a quick release valve. Could you decompress the larger tank, then at zero pressure, open the valve to the plexiglass chamber. You could run the pump the entire time. The plexi chamber would rapidly decompress. 😊

will a phone still work in a vacuum chamber?

Probably the vacuum chamber wouldn't make enough pressure to render a cellphone useless.

If you mean can a phone transmit and receive sound waves with microphone and speaker, through a vacuum, the answer is no. the surface of the vacuum chamber itself should transmit sound though! The electronics, battery, and communication radios don't need air at all

Hi there, I got a quick question to who knows the answer to it: When you vacuum water, it starts to boil at room temperature right? Does it kill all of the bacteria that way, like all of the bacteria get killed when you boil water on a fire?

Could they not use a non notonian fluid inside kevlar except try and alter it to have a higher sheer rate. That means it would essentially be very light weight until it gets hit with a bullet then it turns more into a solid. Obviously you can't use oobleck as it's too weak but they could try and use a non notonian fluid that's got an even higher sheer rate

repeat all your experiments in high pressure chamber in place of vacuum chamber and compare them with their respective vacuum chamber video. that would be great

Is there anyway to test a mini rocket inside of your vacuum chamber without damage ??? It might be hard to remote ignite. Also Im not sure if they make them that small. Just a thought. Thanks! :D
