Journalist Alessandro Schiavone has shot a little documentary of the UPTON PARK area by asking the owner of the famous 'boleyn pub' how West Ham United's move from upton park to the olympic stadium affected the economy and vibrancy of the whole area.
From 1904 to 2016 the Boleyn Ground was home to West Ham United, now the area has become a grim place...

As a Leicester fan, I feel sympathy for the landlady and the staff, even the fans. Moving to a new stadium away from this nice pub is difficult especially if your loyal. They probably lost hundreds or thousands of pounds on match days because of it.

Saints fan here and i really feel for you Hammers supporters. I would go back to the old Dell tomorrow as it was a 'proper' ground. Yes it was old and dated, but boy it had soul and atmosphere much like Upton Park. The sad thing is that Saints physically had to move since those days fans through the turnstyles meant vital revenue. Now those extra seats mean fcuk all as all that matters is staying in the PL and coining the TV revenue from the Foreign armchair cash cows. Did WHU really need to move? For me i dont think so as you still had 40,000 odd which was still more than a lot of clubs. Those extra seats come at a huge price of moving to another souless, sterile stadium. My mates are Cherries fans and i tell them be carefull what you wish for as Dean Court is a great little ground and moving aint the be all and end all. Supporters close to the pitch, true fans not the day trippers, and history. Had some great days at Upton Park but the Olympic Stadium aint the same. Still, good luck for the season WHU (shame those extra seats aint doing us / SFC much good as we look like dropping a league after winning yet another 'net spend trophy'). Modern football, pah.

If the supporters cared enough or liked that pub enough it could still be frequented as a meeting-up point, the new stadium (which I don't like) is only a few kilometres and 20 mins away.

I was working in the Area, around the time of the last game played at Upton Park. In East Ham. On a Friday afternoon I heard a man walling in the Street. I thought it was a drunkard, and mentioned this to my work colleagues, all Asian and all speaking in a foreign language during office hours, good blokes not rooted in the history or culture of the area, the said nothing. The next week the same, then I realised why the said nothing. The man was Calling out to the local Populations for Prayers in the Mosque! As I walked along the roads towards Upton Park, almost all the houses were Asian owned. I thought about the fact that ethnic cleansing has happened without a single shot being fired. Once hardly heard the English language spoken on the streets. The White working class had been purged. The Black working class, anyone remember Clive Best ? Also moved out not as far East as the Whites. Cockney culture is a thing of the past now. You will rarely hear it in the East End. The issue is not even Race it's Culture and the lack of integration and acceptance of the host nations culture, traditions and values. Back in the Day black and white skinheads danced to Ska Music, in the 80's Whites even had a revival of Ska and Black Music such was the integration, other than a Ruby Murray the Asian culture has not bothered to mix.

In the short run yes but not in the long run the do not, and can not complete, and there relay get in the top six or seven at the end of season, Leicester is looking more and more like a fluke as time goes on , Look the top 6 all have big stadiums and the and money that brings in is making the gap get even bigger. Also if some of these team were to play as many games as the big clubs do they be up and down the leagues like hohos also West Ham have the constantly of the British weather always have done and always will

My son chose to support Ipswich coz that's where we moved to u took him west ham twice and he hated it... A lot club have won Fuck all in they life time,there are only 3 domestic competition out the and there that any one of the 92 clubs in the county can win.so in realty the chances of of any club winning something is quite low. Ok i was lucky to have been a Wembley in 1980 as 15 year old and i have seen some great teams in a Hammer shirt but i have also seen some real shit teams playing in the shirt But the real problem is that Sky has so much money in to the game that all the big clubs are buying up all the talent to stop club changing them and new if we want to complete with have have big crowds. Also the Upton Park area and Infrastructure could not of supported the big 50,000 setter stadium and Spurs are going to find that out when the move back to theirs, Look all thing come to an end. and this new Stadium as life of 20 to 30 years may be less before ht has to be rebuilt. but at the end of day it just a game of sport!

In the summer of 2015 I took the tube from Paddington to Upton Park. It was as though I had taken the Underground all the way to North Africa. Once out of the station I only saw two actual British people for the next 15 minutes (an elderly lady and a little boy). I must confess my confusion as to when the English held a referendum voting for such a drastic demographic change.

The boleyn pub was bouncing on matchday in the back room.. But getting a pint was a frigging nightmare lol.. Then people proceed to throw them over everyone else.. Let's go mental indeed lol..most old school fans of course wanted to stay... It's where it all started for us following the hammers from boy to man.. What's done is done now.. And to be fair ever since all seaters came in, the ground and atmosphere wasn't ever the one I was lucky enough to have brought up on.. Those that never experienced the knees ups in the standing terraces really missed out on what football really used to be.. Not the watered down experience of today.. Pubs and bar area's away from home are still decent though

As a Chelsea fan I had some great times at The Boleyn . The atmosphere was always the best in the country in the mid 80's when I started going.The worst things that have happened in football are the demolishing of Wembley Stadium and the introduction of all seater stadiums , foreign players,Sky tv and West Ham leaving The Boleyn. I don't know why West Ham moved to a shitty stadium like that, it's in my opinion like losing a 12th player because the fans always created a good atmosphere. The ground has so much history behind it and I think it's a very sad loss. The Olympic Stadium is a shit hole with no atmosphere at all. I really hate the fact that all these grounds in England are losing their true identities . Bring back terracing and give the game back to the working class man otherwise it'll end up like american football . The 80's were by far the best era my opinion.

You're 100% correct Tronald. I've been following football for 40 yrs and didn't even know that Upton Park was actually called The Boleyn Ground till relatively recently (last 10 yrs) and I've been there many times as an away fan!!!
@CIMAmotor
@CIMAmotor 6 жыл бұрын
All West Ham supporters know the place as the Boleyn ground, it's even mentioned in the 1975 FA cup song . "Here we are to sing a song about our team, by far the best in town West Ham is the name and football is the game, our home's the Boleyn ground" We use 'Upton Park' and 'the Boleyn' interchangably. If you've been following football for 40 years and never noticed you must get distracted quite easily as Match of the Day presenters regurarly refer the the Boleyn ground. In fact I've never heard Jonathan Pearce refer to it as anything else.
@KryptonitetoallBS
@KryptonitetoallBS 6 жыл бұрын
Not really a big surprise that West Ham fans know the name of their own stadium is it? And I guess it depends how long you've been watching football in order to judge whether the few years that nationally The Boleyn has been used as opposed to Upton Park. To me Jonathan Pearce's 14 year MOTD career is relatively short compared to over 40 years of Coleman, Carpenter, Motson, Sinstadt, Davies etc. Whatever, I've been football daft all my life and I remember the Boleyn Ground being a question on who wants to be a millionaire and I didn't recognise it.
@CIMAmotor
@CIMAmotor 6 жыл бұрын
Tronald Dump wrote " love the way nobody ever used the term Boleyn ground " in reference to a West Ham specific video, therefore impling that even West Ham suppporters didn't use that terminology. The crux of my replies relate to that (plus I was a bit cheesed off about the way he declared "pick a fucking name and stick to it".) JP's MOTD career is short compared to the legends but that's still 14 years in which you could have picked up on the reference to the 'Boleyn ground.' All of the other commentators (that you have listed) also use the term 'Boleyn ground' in their commentaries just not all the time. Anyway, it's all moot now as the place has been demolished, now maybe we should have a disagreement over the Olympic/ London stadium! (hahaha). Anyway, thanks for the reply Neutral Observer, I hope your team wins today (unless it's Swansea!!)
