The next Mitsubishi Triton (called the L200 in other markets) will look like a Triton, but it will be a Nissan Navara under the skin. The Navarafication of Triton is a disaster for Mitsubishi (and Triton aficionados - of which I am one) and in fact the Tritonification of Navara is a far superior concept with nothing but upside for Navara (not to mention Triton) - but never underestimate the gross stupidity of large organisations.

Classic beancounter logic: Take a vehicle with terrible styling but good mechanicals and marry it to a vehicle with good styling but terrible mechanicals taking the worst of both, bump the price by 20% then wonder why sales tank. A rather strong aroma of MBA 'engineering'.

But the ranger has good engineering, so your argument doesn't hold water. It's well designed for our country for most punters. So now they will have a shinnyer one with better interior. And reliable drivetrain for Australia. Many a vw engine from an amorak have had to be rebuilt due to the undersizing on the radiator and the gearbox not handling Australian demands.

They should have taken the Triton, engineered it a little more and then slapped a nissan bumper on it. Super select 2 and the price are the major selling point. Triton is far more popular than the Navara is.

Maybe this is a dumb question (my speciality!) but given the Navara is unpopular and uninspired mechanically, why doesn't Ren/Nis/Mit just keep selling the Triton - with the price marked up, to improve the margins? No R&D needed, the tooling has all been paid for. Same for the Pajero.

I am very sad they have decided to can the Pajero wagon. Even after 20yrs it still looks good. It is a nice car to drive for every day and it is ok offroad. In my opinion it is a very good 4x4 for people that don't do offroad often. All the investment has been paid off. All they had to do is slap some modern electronics (lane keep assist adaptive cruise etc) a new engine if they have to and it would make a very compelling proposition with very little investment required. I have no idea what is going in the minds of the people running car companies.

@@jimmys6566 The sales of the new Defender are irrelevant because they are competing with their own products. The new Defender is basically a re-skinned Discovery, so Disco drivers will love it and buy it instead of a new Disco. The old Defender sold in a completely different market without much competition. What will be interesting to see is how well the Grenadier sells in that market place.
@jimmys6566
@jimmys6566 3 жыл бұрын
@@harveysmith100 In the last 5 years of sales the old Defender averaged about 12,500 per year including a pre withdrawal rush, and the subsequent trickle off. The sales of the new model doubled in the first year even with a 50% higher per unit cost. It is likely that the business made the correct call, but in the event that they did not it will not take them long to reintroduce a "G-Wagen" type truck on chassis like the Ineos Grenadier that has still to be produced, or indeed simply buy a 50% share in the Grenadier Company. The annual private sales of the old Defender were under 5,000 units a year and while it could not be sold in volume in the USA nor China due to it's old regulatory standards, the new Defender has been engineered to meet global car regulations, including the USA and China. In total, it is now be sold in 128 territories. Given all that it seems you are blinded by nostalgia as you drive your "unbeatable" Jensen Interceptor

stand at the rear side of the Navara, grab the side and pull, watch it separate from the tailgate sideways. Try strapping something with the rachet tie downs and you can collapse the sides into each other easy as.

I've owned a diesel 4x2 manual tray-top ute since 2016 and it would have to be, overall, the best vehicle I've ever owned. Well built, excellent value for money and I can't rave enough about the engine! What a shame all of this is going to be dumped in favour of a 3rd rate Nissan re-badge. Such a pity that Mitsubishi couldn't have climbed into bed with perhaps Hyundai or Kia and given either of them a vehicle that they don't currently have in their ranges and whilst shoring up production of the Triton. I'm sure that there are just way too many reasons that this couldn't happen but ..... bugger!

From what I’m lead to believe, the next Triton will not simply be a rebodied current generation Navara. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is supposedly responsible for the development of the alliances next generation ladder frame chassis that will sit under both the Triton first and later the next gen Navara. There has also been confirmation Pajero Spot will see a successor roughly 1 year after the launch of the new Triton on the new platform. Super Select is also not going anywhere. John your point about adaptive cruise control is so very valid. I also bought a Triton of which we have conversed with by email re the fitted catch can it has. My 2019 ZR Corolla has adaptive cruise control and whilst it takes some time to get use to it does have some good safety feature I feel that is not something you should ever rely on as there is NO excuse for being off with the fairies whilst at the wheel. The fact it can and does slow you down and indeed stop the car does reduce the chances of an accident. Also when it comes to risk management I would rather be behind someone on a road and resist the male urge to overtake. Firstly it gives me a buffer and also it means I can observe the road conditions by what the car Infront is doing. I recently did a trip to Lightning Ridge via Coonabarabran and followed a mate, all I had to do was steer the car and let it do the rest. The only thing I don't like about adaptive cruise controller is if you are following a car and that is doing 90 and your car is set for 110 and you change lanes the stupid car takes off like a bat out of hell.

maybe not John, the last real info was that Triton would retain Super Select II transfer case and Navara would also adopt it, the main key here is engine, I agree that the Renault sourced twin turbo diesel (same size VGT) 2.3L with the 7-speed torque converter is not a good combo that said neither is Mitsubishi lag infested (under 2,500rpm) 2.4L turbo diesel and 6-speed torque converter, the manuals are different in that drivers can select what gear they want provided engine has enough torque to pull the gear ratio. The other key here is that Navara will go back to leaf springs from all reports and stay with hydraulic (speed sent vie) steering (which is a positive) with a faster on-center ratio to improve response similar to the current Triton. Personally neither will be anywhere near the Ranger or the (duck) Hilux and the Chinese can only compete on price and that can only take them so far.

It's done Cape York, and many more camping trips since then. I thought a TD42 Patrol was a better option, it didn't even survive one Cape York trip,, it destroyed a coolant hose against the aircon pulley and didn't show up on the temp gauge. Slippery When Wet 1 - Fat Cave Drive Way 2 - Great Name for a Rock Band 3 - Ming Moll Modeling Agency Just did a 12 day trip in the Western US (sans Mobile Aluminum Poo Palace) and got a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (Maybe called the Mitsubish ASX in your corner of the world) The only good things to say about it was it held my and Red Devil Two's luggage. (Second Wife, Redhead!) Also, the AC was ice cold in the 117 degree F temps. The downside is the 2.0/CVT struggled at elevations over 10k feet/3000m and it was cheaply put together. Of course, it was a rental, so you don't get the top of the range offering from Avis. But still, seems the only ones we saw were rentals as you could easily see the bar codes for easy check in/out at the rental booth. Mitsubishi used to have a competitive line up. Seems here in 'Merica, not much on offer and none of it is class leading. How much longer will Mitsubishi remain in the US/North American Market?

One of the things that I do have to ask is that while the new Triton will have the same platform, engines, etc with the Navara, its important to note that no one mentioned which parts were used. The new twins could very well carry over the good bits of the Triton, which will be good news for new Navara owners OR as John implies here, they could carry over the Navara bits; which means bad news for new Triton owners. The question is... what bits are being used? Those are still uncertain until you get a new Triton in your hands for a test.
