In light of Asian August, BAM & Beyond is encouraging individuals to explore the theme of 'home' by creating content, whether it be a vlog, film, illustration, podcast, or a simple social media post. To showcase what 'home' means to me, I pieced together this short video with a mix of old and new clips that also represents growth.
I have really enjoyed seeing fellow Asians create pieces of work featuring the theme of 'home', and I would love to hear what your thoughts are regarding this particular topic.
If you would like to celebrate Asian August with us, be sure to use the hashtag #AsianAugust on your post. Tag me @n.hyc and BAM & Beyond @bamnbeyond on Instagram so that we can share it as well!

This is a beautiful video. I can relate because I am a British Born Chinese. I grew up in a world full of racism and discrimination.

Wow..... You've had such an Amazing journey in such a short Lifespan 💗 It's Truly inspiring to see that U have made peace with what has and what quite possibly will be your Future Endeavors 💕 U found Strength and Independence along your journey 💞... but it makes Me sad when U say "I will never feel I belong in any one place" and that U were made to feel unwelcomed in your True Home the UK or uncomfortable with family in Hong Kong 😢 💔 I believe your journey has just begun and someday U will find a Forever Home 💖 Maybe here in San Francisco 😍 Always stay Safe, Nicole 🙏🏼😘💋

Totally felt this as a Chinese descendant born in other country. It gets worse when you work in another country with majority of Chinese descendant that speaks the language while you can’t. Great video with content across your years of life, so much weight on it.

I'm a Malaysian born Chinese. This is the place I were born and this is my country a place I call home. Not China, not Hong Kong, not the UK. I have spent years traveling abroad, finding a new home, but I come to understand that Malaysia is truly a place where I belong, either it be culturally or emotionally attached, it's definitely everything.

Born in London, I've lived in Edinburgh (most of my life), and Hong Kong too. London has been the most meaningful for me since it's filled with many who are not quite British and aren't quite their native ethnicity either, always in between. Ironically, I've been ostracised by HK people. In the end I've found Home is within yourself, be yourself and you will feel at home.

Hi Nicole, really glad to hear your distinct voice as a British Chinese. I'm Chinese with 8 years of study experience in the UK, USA, and Australia. During my extended time study period (I'm doing my Ph.D. now at the age of 27), Brits distinguish each other based on their accents. That is to say, if you have a British accent, you would be regarded as a Brit, whereas someone like me with a mixed accent would be considered as a foreigner. Since you have a perfect British accent, I am curious to ask you a question. After COVID-19, do you find British Chinese encountered some certain level of discrimination and bullies in their workforce or in their life? Greetings from Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China 🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳. ❤❤❤

As a British born brit I didn't feel like it was my home either until I got much older, I've lived and felt fine in other countries but back in the UK is still just the easiest and most comfortable. You are british whether you feel like it or not and here will always be most natural for you (doesn't mean you should or will return though)

It feels like me, I was born in Spain, your experiences look really similar to mine. I’ve always felt I didn’t belong to China, neither Spain, I’ve been confused about my nationality but I know my family is my home and it doesn’t matter where I am, even if many years pass I’ll always belong to these memories, to me, to my friends and to my dear family

Great video!! I've always wondered, what is it like to be a BBC living in the UK... I'm sure lots of ppl would echo your comments too. I consider myself pretty lucky growing up in Canada... this country truly embraces all cultures and we only have ONE identity instead of division of ethnic groups... I suppose it must be pretty awkward for ppl like yourself to feel proud to be "British"... so is HK your permanent home now?

England is always in the top 2 or 3 least racist countries in the world. My ex-girlfriend is British-born Chinese up here in Yorkshire, Northern England. We never get any racism wherever we go. Plus we have a massive population of Chinese people now in Leeds. They are way more accepted than say Muslims. This is not the 1990s anymore.

I agree that things have changed over the years, and everyone goes through different experiences. Since you're likely not a British-born Chinese person, you might not be able to represent everyone else's perspective exactly.
