In this video, I talk about the the things of my 2018 Lexus LS500 that I hate, or more accurately, what I don't like. As I'm sure you're aware there is no such thing as a perfect car, every car has good things and not-so-good things. In this video I mention things such as the turbo lag, lag off the line, lack of a spare tire, seat massage timeout is short, and more. Overall the good things about this car far outweigh the bad things. Be sure to check out my LS500 playlist.

The turning the engine off and on wears down the battery and shortens the life of the starter etc. but mostly for those of us in FL cars get hot INSTANTLY when you turn the a/c off. As far as the turbo lag, try the paddle shifter downshifting to first before you stop. Then use paddle to go again and she'll scat. I've had six LS (400, 430, 460, 460L & 500) and seems for gas mileage they are set to start in second otherwise.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm yes perhaps manually downshifting when I come to a stop would be a solution. I'd hate to do that every time I come to a stop in the city, though. The lag is improved a little in sport mode, I have noticed. Given I have a 10-speed transmission in the LS500 I have wondered if it normally starts off in 2nd gear.... My experience with auto start-stop has been in Toyota hybrids in the past and the A/C keeps running when you are stopped. I guess with non-hybrids the A/C may cut off.

Ha ha I have heard that many people like to disable the auto start-stop but I've owned a couple of Toyota hybrids and it just seems so natural to not run the engine when the car isn't moving. If the wheels aren't turning then what's the point in burning gas? LOL thanks!

All LS models require premium fuel because of they use high compression (ratio) engines. The use of non premium fuel (octane rating lower than 91) will cause the engine to "knock" (Fuel igniting prematurely) reducing power and fuel economy. I've had a 92 LS400, 04 LS430, and an 08 LS460. I really appreciate your videos!

Indeed, the grade of gasoline is not related to engine tuning, but rather to the engine's compression ratio, which is determined by design. It is always permissible to use gasoline with an octane rating higher than recommended, but using a lower octane rating than advised can damage your engine.

The turbo lag you describe bothers me, and if Lexus didn't minimize that with their 2021 refresh it would be a deal breaker for me. My twin turbo V8 in the S550 has no lag at all, and of course my beloved Lexus LS460 had no lag either with its V8 and no turbos. What a great engine that was!
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
I hear that the off-the-line performance is improved slightly for 2021 but have not test driven one to see for myself. It's a pretty big heavy car so to get it moving does take power, and off the line it only uses a V6 engine without the turbos, and I think the tuning could be improved as well. I weighed the pros & cons and decided for my replacement Lexus I'm going hybrid as it has instantaneous torque from the electric motor in the transmission. Any V8 will have better grunt off the line and overall smoother power delivery at all engine speeds.

@@InternetDude Tests on internet from Kevin and others show the 2018 and after twin-turbo V-6 "Will leave the 460 (V-8) in the dust." 4.6 factory 0-60 for the 500 vs. 5.6 sec. 0-60 for factory V-8 460. Sport plus mode plus paddle shifting, of course. These big sedans aren't selling so well lately so may just have to get used to the 500 for the long haul. Interesting you like auto start stop, because a common question I get is how to permanently disable it on the newer MY22 NX350 (hint you can't). Thankfully Lexus has done a good job since it works far smoother than the X3 and B250 which I had with similar systems. The touchscreen again is solved on the newer MY21 LS. That said, the newer Lexus Interface on the new LX600 and NX350 is far superior, especially if you're into tech bit. Also, you now get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Regular fuel is often used only on mass market brands. If you look at the luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Acura etc.) none of them can use regular fuel. Also, turbo motors tends to prefer premium anyways to prevent knocking. The V35A-FTS is a good engine but i feel Lexus still needs work tuning their turbo engines. I have more seat time in a NX350 but even then the newer T24A-FTS still has poor takeoff like your LS500 and the older NX300, and part throttle at low speed tends to create "surge" effects you won't find on a BMW or Audi turbo engine. I suspect it is mainly down to throttle calibration more than anything. Glad to hear you still like the Lexus overall, in comparison to the hour long list of complaints with a certain brand starting with a T and ends with A (not Toyota) 😂
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I figure the engine is spinning to power the wheels so if I'm stopped the engine running is just a waste of gas. However I have owned 3 Toyota hybrids so it seems normal to me. I have a wireless CarPlay adapter that just plugs into the USB so that's great, but it's more cumbersome to use the touchpad with it. I still overall really enjoy the car even though I am replacing it (hopefully next month). Yes a LOT less issues than the previous "T" cars. They were fun but when you need a mechanic 5x per year and there are other compromises, it's just not worth it.

Funny, but I really dislike the Auto Stop/Start on my 2015 Mercedes S-550, and the second thing I do after starting the vehicle is push the button that disables this "feature". If I buy a 2021 and on Mercedes S then the new 48 volt mild hybrid feature will enable seamless start/stops and that would be OK. Yeah the lag off the line is annoying. I came from a 330 which was a turbo as well so I had similar lag expectations. I actually like having the touchpad in addition to a touchscreen. I miss the touchpad/rotary input option when it’s just touchscreen like in my other car. In Waze when I want to mark that there is a police car, reaching to the bottom right screen is harder than swiping or rotating a knob. My gripe that you didn’t cover is that heated/cool seats and heated steering wheel are hidden in the menu. Hard buttons would be so much better. Same with massage. Concierge is fine but I prefer manual controls.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and sharing your experiences. I totally agree on the seat and steering wheel controls, I had mentioned that in a previous video. Lexus did it right in the ES by putting in physical buttons for those controls. For the most part I can just set it to auto but that isn't always best. I have found that if I want the heated seat on I can leave it set to auto and turn the HVAC temp up a degree or two and that kicks on the heated seat. Regardless I'd prefer to see the physical buttons show back up in the next revision of the LS. I really considered the BMW and part of me still does want one, but in the end I want as little drama and repairs as possible with my car ownership. I had a Tesla that needed the mechanic 5x in one year and I lost my mind and traded it at quite a loss just to get rid of the car. It was a fun car but when things are always needing repair it's no longer worth it.

How are you liking your ES300h? My wife’s RX450hL mirror broke off at an automatic carwash so I am very disappointed with the poor quality, the plastic housing that holds it is very thin. The vehicle only has 645 miles so now I feel like trading both the ES and RX. The repair will be around $2400 so I an hoping the car retains its value long enough so we can get rid of it soon. Now I am worried that it will fall apart unless this was a fluke, but as a previous owner of Toyota products, I don’t see their durability. Are they the worst, no, but surely not the best. My Impala so far has been the most reliable car, followed by the Malibu. I had a Buick long ago that was very good mechanically but terrible cosmetically. I have owned a Mazda, Honda, and Infiniti and all of them had issues. The Honda Odyssey was fine with the engine and transmission for the time we had it but the electrical components and sliding door kept breaking, they are actually being sued now for both issues. The Infiniti Q45 was very well built but could not keep a transmission running past 100k miles, 3 to be exact. And the 2021 Mazda CX9 has a defect were the engine burns the oil, they are also being sued at this time for that. So I am over the myth of Japanese car reliability, I wish the Lincoln Town car and Cadillac Fleetwood were still around. I guess I can hope for a better car with Mercedes, I know they are over engineered and can break but at least the car is exciting to drive and has good features without an overly dated infotainment system and 360 camera.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
My car has been flawless so far. The car wash I usually use is touchless but I do hand wash as well, never had any mirror or trim issues or anything. I have about 4,500 km on it so far. I'm not very familiar with the RX in terms of things that break but I'm guessing you used a car wash with big spinning brushes? I think you are supposed to fold the mirrors in at the car wash to help prevent the mirrors from getting grabbed. I would say after being on multiple car forums over the years that Toyota quality isn't quite what it was say 10-15 years ago. But there are a lot more demands now in terms of tech and features whereas back then the cars lasted such a long time because they were so simple. We also have a 2021 RAV4 Prime and it had shaky mirrors that had to be fixed (were shaky right on the test drive) and then a TSB for an HVAC noise in cold weather, and then we had one key fob outright fail. I don't think we would have had as many issues if it was a 2011 RAV4. However the car has been basically perfect for a year now so I'm really not complaining. My Tesla needed a mechanic 5x in one year and I snapped. Toyota sure isn't perfect anymore but they are better than the alternative. I was in the Mercedes dealer earlier this year, did not test drive but I may still buy one some day. They do understand luxury, build quality, etc. I hear they do tend to have electrical gremlins and maintenance is quite expensive. I did test drive a BMW but did not buy, I still have reliability concerns with them.

My 07 Town Car, I've had it one year. I replaced the fuel filter for maintenance reasons and replaced the tires. I discovered a few failed blend door actuators which I changed (three of them) and the A/C accumulator was rusted and leaking so I had a shop replace that. The car is about perfect as I can get now. It rides like an absolute dream, so smooth and quiet. Those days of big comfy luxury automobiles are gone. The focus is on tech, features, performance, turbos, and sportiness it seems. I'm not aware of any simple, dependable luxury cars available today...

@@InternetDude The carwash I went to did have the spinning brushes and I did fold the mirror, I think that made it worse. Next time I won’t fold them and use touchless only, it’s disappointing that I have taken all my other cars through it and none of them broke. I’m debating between Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Cadillac for the next SUV. It’s shocking that my 17 Impala outlived our 18 Honda Odyssey, 21 Mazda CX9 and about to outlive both our 22 ES and RX. The ES has not broken down yet, but there is a small speck on the front camera that looks like a smudge on the camera screen, so the lens must be a cheap plastic or glass. The most comfortable vehicle I have been in recently was a 2017 Buick Enclave, it had the old fashioned double plush cushions that Buick used and the suspension was extremely soft. Mpg was around 16 so it was terrible on fuel economy, I believe the new one is much better, however, the seats are firm. I wish I could understand Cadillac and Buick’s mentality going away from what defined their vehicles which is the most comfortable ride quality. Ford has maintained that with their F series trucks, but their Navigator and Aviator while nice, are nowhere near as comfortable as the Town Car.

I did not have any shudder, just lag and hesitation off-the-line. The powertrain is the real downside of this car, it's not fitting such a high end car. I traded my LS500 in for a new ES hybrid recently and love it. I only miss the massaging seat. The ES is smoother, very quiet, and much better off the line and around town. And it gets a lot better fuel economy on the highway too. I do not regret trading my LS for an ES so I certainly wouldn't stop you from doing the same!! I had owned LS400, ES300, two ES350 in the past. A few years ago, I had purchased Audi A8 instead of LS500. Here are the main reason - I hate the control pad of the infotainment. Lots of distraction if you want to change your AC and navigate the menu. Lexus owners had been complaining for over 10 years. Lexus decided to do nothing - Why does Lexus remove spare and equip Run-flat tires? Customers had been complaining the harsh ride and limited choices of run-flat tires. - Lexus decided to import the long wheel base only. It is like a boat. What is the point of keep increasing exterior length and shrinking the internal leg room? Please help me out on the rationale - Long list of options. LS is a flagship sedan. Why do Lexus even offer base(bare bone model)? Mark Levinson, Semi-aniline leather interior and rear side window shade should be standard. It is okay to offer Luxury Rear seat package, etc. - MSRP of LS of base model is too close to ES Ultra Luxury. Keeping LS base price low does not mean you are going to get more sales. Lexus Marketing really lost me in the last 10 years. LS used to the icon and flagship of Lexus. It is suppose to be for conservative buyers. Please make it simple and bring all handy function back such as ventilated & heated seat control in the center console. Turbo engine is cheap and unreliable. Bring the V8 Natural Aspirated engine back please. Last but not least, kill the Fsport option on LS. What the hell is Fsport doing in LS line up?

Lexus does need to go simpler and back to it's roots on the LS if they want me to buy another one in the future. But add better tech and ideally more ambient lighting. You can use regular fuel, and add some Chemtool B-12 occasionally to clean the injectors, cylinder heads, etc. If you notice any hesitations in your acceleration, then move up to mid-grade fuel and that should fix it. All good luxury sedans today with strong acceleration and true luxury items inside like massage and top quality leather and other materials require Premium gas. My Infiniti Q45, my Lexus Ls460, and my current Mercedes S550 require premium. Part of the cost of driving a vehicle like this.

My Grandma has an '05 LS430 that she bought as a CPO in '08 with 15K on it. She has absolutely loved the car with it's smooth ride and very comfortable and quiet interior. But it is now 17 years old and it has 195K on it. She is ready for an upgrade and she thinks she wants another LS. But I am concerned that the LS500 is not the same kind of car as the LS430 and she will not like it- that its too sporty and less comfortable. So how does this car compare to the older LS models?
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the LS430 is the best LS ever made, period. The LS500 is not comparable in to be quite honest. It's sportier, less headroom, less foot room, less smooth powertrain, bumpier due to hard run-flat tires, etc. I would advise her to drive the new LS but also consider the ES. I traded my '18 LS500 for a '22 ES hybrid and love it. It's missing some features and comfort of the LS but in many ways it's a better car. Just my thoughts anyway. Honestly if she likes the LS430 now, maybe just treat it to a detailing at a detail shop and just keep it ;-)

Does your Ls 500 make a beeping noise everytime it’s in reverse and can that taking off or down to one beep?

It had like a single beep in reverse, the dealer can turn that off if it does beep continuously.

I drive a 2018 GS350 F, and I wish they kept that model and made it look like the LS 500. I think my next Lexus will be an LS500 F, red with white interior and I wish the touch screen was integrated in a nicer way and not what they did with the 2021 model which is just an after thought cheesy solution.

That stop and go is the worst .!! Premium gas come on.!! The turbo lag i agree but I got the turbo booster from TOM’S and it’s 100% better Get a ES luxury package and get a air suspension Aftermarket and buy a massage seat cover for it Had it on a non massage seat and it works great but also stops at Exactly 15 minutes Just like my massage seat in my house it only goes to 15 minutes and then it turns off What I did was a got a spare rim and tires and removed all the run flats to. Regular tires are 100 times a smoother ride I agree with the rear but I don’t drive this car with ppl since I have the Executive white interior 2019 model.

I would NEVER buy a car with that stupid auto start stop feature! It damages the engine when it shuts off after driving at high speeds. Your engine is NOT supposed to just shut off after driving at a high-speed, bro! Hopefully, the great engineers at Lexus continue to make that feature an option and not standard on this great machine! If so, at least give us the option to turn off this useless and dumb feature!

Not likely to ever happen. If Tesla opens the SC network I will go buy a well built CCS car and use their network, though. I can't get over the poor quality and poor customer service. I had spent $190,000+ on my P100D and there were issues they refused to fix so I gave up on the company. There were other issues that I never mentioned in a video. Such short sighted thinking, that's not a way to keep repeat customers. I think more people are realizing how much BS spews out of Elon now too regarding Semi, Roadster, Cybertruck, FSD. They really aren't doing anything new or groundbreaking, their main product is hype.
