After designing a variety of Courtyard Houses that ranged from a green planted area to reflecting pools and more, I've come up with 5 different ideas that I hope will guide you as you design your own courtyard home.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I fell in love with one of your designs featuring the reflecting pool and central tree/garden. It has given me some ideas for a potential dream house to be built hopefully within the next year. Being a priest, I hope to have a home that is not only featuring a central courtyard but also in a cross shape. I look forward to future videos.

I love these ideas. Wondering if it’s just a pipe dream for me, though. I live in a place that receives massive amounts of snow.

Thank you! There’s lots of ways you can create something like this in a place with lots of snow. One that comes to mind is enclosing the water courtyards with an operable skylight that closes when it’s cold/snowing and opens when it’s warm.

Thank you. May be you can check out Kerela style courtyard houses and chettinaadu courtyard houses from India. Vaastu Sashtra, ancient advice on architecture suggests courtyard to be placed in the center,North East corner..thought it could be of some interest to you❤

Looking to build a house but I'd enjoy a open courtyard in the middle to use for garden and relaxing pebble stone pathway would be nice obviously sloping towards the center for a drain dropout I live in arkansas though the weather can barely decide what it's season is at times So I'm trying to find the pros and cons of a courtyard house or if I should got making a sun room but still in the center of the house

That’s an interesting problem to solve. I’m working on a concept for a central courtyard design that has a glass roof enclosure over it. It’s in a northern climate, but the glass roof enclosure would help control the courtyard area’s temperature, humidity, and provide protection from the elements.

I love courtyards homes. Unfortunately, Ive never seen one in the Caribbean, where I currently reside. Is there a reason why they're not popular in the tropics? Maybe too wet?

That’s a great question! I’ve seen a handful of courtyard homes in similar climates to the Caribbean. For popularity, could be tied to regional architecture and courtyard houses not being part of the general design styles. Whereas, places where courtyard houses are popular like Kerala, India and Japan have had a history of courtyards throughout their home designs

I‘m doing a project right about now in architecture school, a two story Villa that has an interior courtyard with an open roof. Providing natural light and circulating hot air, but I‘ve come across a predicament. How do I account for the sunlight to reach the Interior courtyard in the ground floor? Would really appreciate it if you give me some tips. Thanks in advance!

One idea would be to carve the building so that sunlight can reach it like the courtscraper building (VIA 57 west) by BIG. Another could be to locate the courtyard closer to an exterior wall and use glass at the 2nd level so sunlight can reach the courtyard. I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Good luck!

Have a lower side of the house (like an entryway or garage) face the south so that midday sun will shine over and brilliantly light the courtyard (11pm to 2 pm).

Hi Tim. Thanks for your excellent videos. I am going to build on a 2020 square meter block in Australia. Have you any experience in building a single story dwelling where the courtyard is wide enough to capture the northern aspect twice? I believe I would need an 8 - 10 meter width courtyard to make this possible and have plenty of space to achieve this.

Hi there! I haven't designed a single story house with a courtyard as wide as you mention. One thought that comes to mind is that the design and shape of the roof could also be used to capture the northern aspect twice. Although it's not a house, the VIA 57 residential building in NYC does something similar where the roof is pulled up at one corner and lower at the other, which opens views up towards the river. PLZZ ANSWER 👇👇 HUGE fan of indoor courtyards but 1 question always pops in my mind that during summer doesn't it becomes too hot so how do you manage harsh sunlight during summer?

The courtyard in this design isn’t “indoor” since it’s open at the top. You might be thinking about an enclosed central courtyard with a glass roof. If that’s the case, automatically operated windows would help because it would open up and let out the heat.

Hi there! Yes, there are a lot of great examples of courtyard houses in cities where the houses and buildings are connected. You can research Japanese courtyard houses in Tokyo and I’m sure you’ll find a lot of examples.

I've seen, online, some absolutely stunning courtyard homes in Morocco and Oman. I've always been absolutely fascinated by the designs. It inspired my design for a home hidden within a botanical garden. The master bedroom high above with plexiglass floors and a waterfall just beneath cascading down to the lush landscape below. I love blending modern technology with nature and wish more homes were designed with that in mind.
