“Sustainability isn’t an aesthetic, it’s a method” is such a hard line 100/10 I want it on my tombstone when I die

I don't really comment much, but I watch a lot of your videos as I have also joined the path of trying to be more eco friendly over the past few years. You absolutely can have different styles and still try to be sustainable, but it's really not talked about very much. I am a 25 year old goth and metalhead and 80% of my closet is from thrift stores, the other 20% is clothes I bought new before going more eco friendly Ive had for a while that I have taken care of well. Other than the exception of band shirts from concerts, which I plan to keep for years and years anyway, I buy most of my stuff secondhand and do a lot of DIY. This was a cool video to see, I think a lot of us had the emo phase. I did too, then evolved to a goth/metalhead and kinda just stayed there because that's what I truly like. I really liked seeing the pictures of those well put together Victorian inspired outfits! Had not even guessed you went through some alternative fashion phases.

This was such a joy to watch, and also surprisingly emotional! We are almost exactly the same age, and even though we've had different styles growing up, I recognise so much of the overall vibe. I went from not caring about clothes at all to an intense heavy metal phase and then a cutesy dress sort of aesthetic. Lots of memories flooding back. We talk about inner child work a lot, but I feel like our inner teenagers deserve so much love as well!

Oh wow, it's so interesting to see how other people lived that 'era'! I remember so many of these styles. I even remember buying (after a looong period of saving money and then getting a size too small because it was on a ridiculous sale, like -70 or -50%) a What Katie Did corset and I treasured it so much. I think it's still in a box in my parent's house somewhere. However I never had the courage to wear anything alternative in public, and now that I'm almost 30, I'm kind of sad I didn't! Little me was trying so hard to make friends and blend in. I did go through a vintage/1940s-1950s phase in my early twenties though, so I'm glad past me did have some amount of style fun, before I decided to just wear practical outdoorsy clothes everywhere and spend all my free time hiking :)

Oh I so feel this, I'm a decade older (will turn 40 this year) but I do remember how hard it was to find alternative clothing. Also I had zero money to go around, so I already started finding things second hand and cut up tights to make tops of. I can so relate. I then went through a corporate phase when I started working, and then a mom phase to find out what kind of mom I wanted to be between all the other moms, and I can now safely say I'm in a way, back where I started, but then more fashionable haha. Like I said on your facebook, It's never a phase, but the style changes haha. Love the vid, and belatedly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The emo to the decora(For me I went emo bargain bin scene because there were NOT enough cute stuff available in my tiny norwegian town and online shopping was not a thing for me yet) Obligatory fan of nightmare before christmas, listened to Avril and Emily Autumn omg. The memories.

I was into Lolita for 15 years haha! I still wear it from time to time. I also believe it's one of the most sustainable alternative fashion out there because of the huge second hand market, quality and price of the clothing (that makes you want to keep wearing the same clothes for years) and limited releases each year. I still wear some from time to time. I very rarely cringe of my past self and I like what you said: that we are still 17, still 10 and all those ages. :)

haha even before you sid anything, I knew from the second, that your corset era, was totally Emily Autumn! the red hair gave it away! - love what you said about sustainability is a mindset, and that these styles can be done in a less fast fashion way! way to go, right now, in these "æstetiske" years, where everyone jumps on a trend for less than a week, just to do another trend the next week

So like my daughter. She went through a Goth like period and loved Avril. Actually, we both did and still do. I was always too shy as a kid to wear whatever I wanted but she was brave and I loved it

As someone who wears jfashion still, majority of the pieces I have are 10+ years old. Jfashion (or any of kind of fashion) can be more sustainable, you just have to be more selective of what you buy 🎀

As a teen I always looked at all those alt-fashion kids with so much envy, like how did they physically acquire all that cool stuff?? I didn't have my own money back then (besides an allowance that was something like 3€/week). My parents would only buy me cheap and basic stuff, H&M was like the most expensive they would possibly go. Buying a shirt with my allowance every few months was doable, and I did that sometimes, but some girls had those gothic lolita dresses from japan and I was just in awe. And same with kids who always had merch from shows/movies/franchises they loved; my parents didn't buy branded stuff, that was too expensive. Maybe like 1 merch thing per Christmas. Literally how does one acquire all of the jack skellington things as a teen?

I definitely rocked the EA red with baby bangs along with all the black and white stripes. Went to one of her concerts in a corset, mini skirt and velvet cape - so much fun!

Thank you for sharing this. It was very interesting to see how much you tried, loved and changed over time and how cool you are for still loving your younger self. I think i should take an example from this and be kinder to my teenage self as well. =)

Oh my goodness! I loved (and still love) Emilie Autumn. 🐀 Had the same obsession with corsets but could never afford them in my teens. Definitely invested in a couple steel-boned ones in my 20s though. This video was so fun!

This takes me baaaaccckkk! I look back on my emo days and I half cringe + half smile. Yeah, some looks were bad but some of them were fire! Plus, it made me happy in the moment & I still use some of the style habits (I’m looking at you skinny jeans) 😂😂💛

I can relate so much!! I was emo as well and always just stayed home and never tried drugs or drank alcohol. Still to this day I wear mostly black (it is easier lol) and because I have a lot of visible tattoes people assume I drink and party. But I am happily married and we stay at home and drink kombucha lol

I am so jealous. I am a few years older but i was robbed from this. I was not allowed to discover styles, not anything trendy or pretty was allowed in my life. Nothing i expressed that i liked was allowed, but banned. My inner teen is still dreaming about the black long hair, the long black coat, the boots the rock band t-shirt that never happened, and never will 😢

I still put stickers on phone and got gloomy bear hanging from my phone. Wasn't sean kid but a goth kid. I want jrock hair 11th grade cut all my hair off that was past my butt. They messed my hair up cutting it. I could only do Miniature mohawk. Every one thought in to woman because of my hair. I had bell but used pet ones. I wore chains in school. No one messed with me.
