For my amusement, I follow two "luxury" KZfaq accounts. The uncontrolled spending is mind boggling, especially when the buyers admit that they rarely use most of the bags they buy. Having to prove yourself worthy of the honour of being offered a bag tickles me pink.

When I first heard of hermes it was in a video where a woman was super excited to have been able to buy a bag from them, even though it was a color she didn't really like. I was so so confused why she was talking about being _allowed_ to buy something that she didn't even want... Plus the fact that you have to prove your loyalty to the brand, and that you're not just interested in a specific product, is ridiculous. If I'm looking to buy a bag, I am interested in buying A BAG. Period. I will buy a bag, not marry a brand, and once I have bought my bag, I will have a bag and I will no longer be interested in buying other bags. Why would it work any differently.

One piece of advice I heard for getting a Birmingham bag was to buy whatever the sales associate wanted you to buy, even if you didn’t like it or want it. Crazy. I feel lucky I was raised with the mindset of things are meant to be used, the outfits I wear for special occasions are also some of my most worn because they’re my favourite and really pretty. Brilliant video

True luxury is like you say, knowing where and how the product was made and that all things are in order. I'm willing to support ethical brands that are truly striving to be fair. But most things I get these days are second hand. People who want a Birkin bag are paying for the name. Quality of luxury brands is not what it used to be. There are videos comparing new and old Chanel bags proving lowered quality in new bags. Chanel shoes falling apart after one wear. And the brand responding that their shoes are meant for walking from the house to the car but no further. Can you believe that nonsense? People waiting for hours outside of luxury brand butiques to get a bag or a piece of clothing. This is insane. And you know who buys that stuff. Middle class. Not the rich. Please continue with these videos about luxury brands. Make it a series. There is so much dismantling needed. People truly believe that the pricetag stands for quality when in fact it's a status flag.

I used to work in a woolen mill who produced Hermes products it always baffled me the high price of the pieces considering they were made from the same cashmere as the cheaper woolen products we made. People will pay anything with a designer name even if it’s not actually better quality.

I hope you liked this video??? I loved this video! I used to be obsessed by brands in my 20s, but that left place to more important staff like travelling and enjoying good meals out. I don't buy expensive brands anymore, unless they're from Vinted. I actually don't understand people that are happy to pay crazy amount of money for owning something luxurious. I don't understand it all. When I have extra money I donate it to people who rescue animals or to Greenpeace or other causes. Thanks for this video ❤

It is amazing to know how totally on the other end of the spectrum lady Birkin was about using her bag comparing to modern users (that simply display them in any available combination, that’s all). I get there is an investment element in it, so you keep them in good shape and allow to gain value over time, even passing onto children, like a house.

I love these deep dives and you also talking about the social and psychological sides of consumerism. My mom and me both have a soft spot for handbags. I’m getting ‘better’ because of the eco aspects, but I do love eyeing fancy bags. We used to play ‘if we win the lottery what bag would we buy?’ And my mom used to say a birkin. Some time ago I went through this rabbit hole, like you, and told her about all the hoops she would have to jump through, and I joked to her ‘well better start now so when the lottery hits you don’t have to wait a couple of years extra 😅’. Since then the Birkin lost a lot of the appeal 😂 ‘maybe a vintage one then’. I’m glad that although I wasn’t raised in a very eco way, they never allowed me to become ‘addicted’ to a brand, just for the name. Still waiting on the lottery to hit (even though I never play) and to buy a vintage bag! 😂

The only other celebrity that I have seen use the Birken like it was intended, is one of the Olsen twins. I'd love a Birken but use it like it's muse. As you say "love it and use it". I'm not into fashion but the Birken has always intrigued me for some reason. Even if I had the money I don't think I could be done with the snootyness of some fashion houses.

My husband was a carsalesman and we would get the occasional luxury brand car to drive. I have to say i can see why rich people like them, that being said the idea that by extension you are a superior person is really obnoxious. I would also expect with the price tag the makers would be paid fair wages, the fact that they aren't is also obnoxious, especially with celebrities lecturing us about equality while promoting this stuff. But yeah, if a brand represents a special level of quality then it's exclusivity might hold validity, if not its dumb. Also if the bag is high quality but people with money are still consuming them as though they are fast fashion, thats obnoxious too. Those people with huge closets full of expensive unused bags because they are 'collectors' is crazy. I mean, just collect pokemons or something 🤷‍♀️

I think it is really sad to have so many luxury items just to own them and not really use them. And as you described what a costumer has to do to buy one of the Birken bags it sounded really crazy to me, your comparison to a cult seems really fitting.🤯 I love your mindset of wearing your more special pieces mixed with others regulary. I try to get there with the few I own too (one blouse I have for a few years but only wore christmas, which got me into thinking two years before that it is sad I'm not wearing it more often. So last year I began wearing it a few times before christmas) since it is sad to have items you really like hanging in your wardrobe most of the time. We only live once so why not using what makes us happy while we can?

I wouldn't recognize a Birkin bag if it bit me in the nose - and I feel pretty good about that. ^_^ It's just a bag - nothing special about it - I don't get the hype. After your explanation on how customers have to essentially prostitute themselves to be "offered" the "oportunity" to buy one, owning one of these is practically like wearing an "I am stupid" sign around your neck. I mean really: how much more can you lower your self worth than to beg someone to be allowed to spend money at their store?! Sometimes there are products, that could be considered luxury, that are more expensive, because the quality actually is higher, and I get paying more for something like that - say: a pair of custome made shoes that will fit perfectly, keep for a long time and will be able to be repared in time. It makes sense that the price is higher, because you get handmade, customized and quality materials in return - and therefor you wear those everyday for years on end - that is the kind of luxury I can get around for: a longterm investment in a high quality product that will last in constant use. I am however not willing to pay for a name/brand/cult - not ever and on principal. If you are doing the advertising for a label, they should be paying you.

Dear Lord, this sounds like terrible middle school advice for getting a boy to like you: hang out with his friends, don’t approach him too directly, like what he likes, never look too eager…yikes. Also, the class and especially race aspects of quiet luxury are super interesting. I remember the late eighties and early nineties when rap artists began sporting big luxury logos as an act of defiance/ proof that these things weren’t out of reach (complicated in itself). And brands were at first horrified, then began putting out super logo-covered stuff for the “urban” market, all the while making the “quiet” stuff even more expensive and exclusive. They butter their bread on both sides.

Very interesting perspective. I belive you could have done more research. Hermes have compensated and given bonous for their craftsmen there is references to be found about this. Also having touched their leather it feels like touching silk and velvet textile, not leather. It is another level of attention to detail and patience Hermés stand for, its slow and beautiful in its simplicity and playful design.

PLEASE for the love of god, get informed where leather comes from, it's a by-product of the meat industry, while yes, animas are kept for fur, they can't be treated badly, because it would all lower the quality of the fur....
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 4 ай бұрын
A couple of things here; so not all leather is a by-product from the meat industry, there are leather cattle specially bred for leather. Secondly, animals in the meat industry, in industrial animal ag, can absolutely still be treated horribly, and they are, often. This industry constantly faces animal abuse cases, just look them up because all this information is readily available. Abuse, mistreatment and inhumane living conditions is a reality for millions of animals, especially when cheap meat is a priority. Animals in the exotic category are not even inspected for abuse.
