What I Learned from Writing without an Outline

Prior to 2019, I’d always written with an outline close at hand. I almost couldn’t begin writing without an outline. However, as I began to plan a 4 book rapid-release, I realized I wasn't going to have time to plot out every last detail. So for the first time ever, I tried writing without an outline.

I rarely write with an outline. Even though it might not be the most efficient way, I like to be surprised by my characters. If you would like to know more about my writing process, you can check out my KZfaq series, “The Cynical Writer.”

There is also the hybrid Plantser...Which typically is someone who plans out the very basic structure but pantses the majority of the flesh of the book. I tend to be Plantser... I start with a story idea. Work out an overview of the whole story and from that write the story.

This was so helpful! Your channel doesn't have very many videos but I hope you'll post some more. I used to be a diehard outliner too, because the first book I ever finally finished had an outline. I'm figuring out that those things that shock me as I write them if I don't know where I'm going are the best!

Thank you! I intend to post more videos soon, but I'm slow on editing them. At least quarantine has given me something else to do. 😂 And yes, it really is the best feeling! I don't think I'll abandon outlines altogether, but I'll definitely be sticking to them less rigidly.

I am the ultimate plotter. I outline everything aspect of my story. Even down to exact phrases certain characters will say. The outline to my first book was just shy of 11,000 words. The thought of trying the pantser method gives me anxiety!

How many words is the book you outline 11k for? Do you ever get caught up in ‘Outline Burnout or Outline Paralysis’? If so, what’s your fix?

@@PianoMan-hx3ev my finally story was just shy of 80,000 words. I did get stuck with some “outline burnout” I would read over what I had, I set up certain music playlists to put myself into a certain mood. For instance my current WIP is about a young man finding his recently deceased Grandfather’s memoirs and realizing that he didn’t know much about him. Family secrets, murder and cover ups. So my playlist is a bit dark and depressing LoL but it’s what helps me get through the hard parts of writing.
