Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

When I heard you say "paint what you see", it reminded me of the best advice I ever got from an art teacher, which was, paint what you se not what you know. I know that the top of the cup is round, but what I see is an ellipse. I know that trees have individual leaves but what I see are blotches of different shades of green. I know that there are details in distant objects, but I can't see them. This advice has given me the ability to show depth in my painting.

I I have painted landscapes in oils for over 50 years, but it wasn't until very late in my career that I discovered "blocking in" and since, I can now do a painting, which used to take me 100 hours in probably 5 or 6 hours. You have stumbled upon a gold mine, son. One other thing. I do my block in using acrylic, so it is dry within an hour or so. That maintains any possibe interest in certain portions of the picture, which I may have forgotten about, had I been forced to let the block in dry for a day or two.

You're spot on. I've a little white "Scottie Dog" that I've painted sitting on a Naples yellow floor and I've lost count of how many coats of white I've put on that little dog to make it stand out properly. The yellow is not dark enough. I can see that now. So thank you very much. Bravo, take a medal out the bucket Here's a tip that may be useful that I've just thought of I use "liquin" and I've noticed that it becomes solid when there is still a lot still left in the bottle. It's a nuisance and a waste. So I suddenly got the idea of sucking up the "liquin" with a hypodermic syringe and then giving my pallet a little squirt as and when required. It stays liquid when it's inside the syringe for days. And I use a "Walls ice cream box" with a hole drilled in it so that I can push the syringe's protective sheath into the hole. I can then store my syringe together with my brushes in the vertical position, thus saving space on my small worktop Kind regards to all - Chris in Thailand

Over the years being self taught ive painted in many different techniques and approaches but this is also how i do most of my work. I see it as finding the mid tonal value then blocking in with that and then working into that with darks and lights (if working alla prima then have to mix your colours accordingly knowing they will be mixed into the midtone. ie make the mid value darks a bit darker than usual with the knowledge that youll be blending it into the midtone thats already down )

The squintty eye thing is a revelation , I can actually blurr my vision without squinting, (I'm not sure what's happening there but it gives me that unfocused blurred vision, and I can use that to see any colour areas).
