i noticed some weird noise filtering artifacts from the recording done on the phone, when the DR-05X was connected. I discovered something similar on android phones as well, once i connected an external mic to the 3,5mm TRS jack. Suddenly the audio had some weird noise filtering going on with nasty aliasing artifacts that made the audio sound like MP3 files at super low bitrates. And i simply cannot find any option in the phone system settings to turn off any kind of filtering for external phones. I guess this is simply hard-worked into Phone Operating systems when it comes to external phones :/

I really do prefer the open and non directive sound of the DR-05X alone.

Yeah, it's nice, but depending on what you want from it, if you want to record speech then you really need to have it very close to your mouth for it to sound usable, otherwise it picks up everything around you.

When using the phone to also record a video. You end up with audio files and video files and must combine in post? Or does the phone video use the audio coming out from the DR-05X? Does my question make sense?

You can use it as an interface for your phone and record the audio directly to the video so no need to add it in post. That's how it's worked for me with an android iPhone so far at least.

Hey there, I'm not sure I haven't tried that, but I guess you could use it as an interface and then just choose that option in your streaming app. What are you on? Mac, PC or phone?

I was hoping that I could use the DR-05X by itself to record music and listen to what I just recorded. However, the audio output from the Tascam's built-in speakers is very soft in volume - a small fraction of the volume that a phone produces with its own tiny speakers. Am I missing something, or is that simply a characteristic of this recorder?

Hi there, thank you for such an informative video. I’m attempting to film ASMR with the Tascam DR-05X and I’m getting a ton of self noise. I’m new to this, so I don’t know what to do in order to reduce it. Do you have any tips? I appreciate all the help!!

One idea that comes to mind is that there is a setting to adjust the gain automatically and that can cause increase in noise especially in a quiet environment. I'd suggest to set it manual. Let me know if it was the issue.

@@FaanaMusic Hi, friend! Thank you for the reply and I’m sorry I didn’t reply sooner. For some reason, my notifications on that KZfaq app don’t always come through. Anyway, I think adjusting gain manually helped a bit. I did some more research on this model and it turns out that the preamps aren’t the best quality, so I have to work with what I can. Is it me or is the quality of the mic from the DR-05x very, very bad compared to the microphone that you used for the video (Rode NT1)? Or did you do post-processing of the audio?

I didn't process anything, it is definitely thinner but I wouldn't say necessarily way worse. It's clean and crisp but definitely thinner than the rode. Also keep in mind that it's important where the mic is and wether it's facing the source properly. I'm aware that there's a part of the video where I'm not speaking directly into the mic and it sounds a bit muddied. Hope this helps.

My Drox isnot rubberised but has a very good grip to it feels nice in the hands and slip free

I connected my tascam with android phone I would like to record a video with sound but also to hear the sound as I record, I also connected my headset with lineout via cable but I cannot hear anything, any tips ? :)

Could you describe the problem some more? Is it distorted or what specifically is the issue?

Distorted. You can hear a poor quality recording if the sound source is loud. But doesn't capture details

I see, have you tried changing the gain inside the device? I also recommend switching off automatic gain function, keep it on manual and set up the right sensitivity.
