My experience with buying used bikes differs somewhat from what you are seeing here. If I were to pull out a compression gauge and then try to pull a plug most sellers would tell me to pack up and get lost ASAP. As far as telling me what is wrong, well, that never happens. Many used bikes will not start since they have been sitting for extended periods of time. All you can do is look it over as best you can and make an offer if you feel it's worth something.

Hey Irishrover - nice to see you here. I used to enjoy the Honda CB 500X videos you used to post on your channel (being an owner of a 2015 model here in SW Australia) - some beautiful scenery you used to share, great commentary - and of course great to see your motorcycle. Are you still riding it? This young bloke (Octane) is really clever and personable - blows me away at what he can do.

Before pulling that top end, why not try spraying some penetrating oil down those cylinders to see if the penetrating oil can free up some potential stuck rings.. sometimes those rings come back with a little run time. It’s always worth trying.

I believe an untitled bike 500ccs or less and over 25 years old doesn’t need to be titled in Vermont, so what most people do is register in Vermont through the loophole and then transfer registration. dmvs have to accept registration transfers from non-titling states.

Those 750 engines will often wet-sump when they sit a while, i.e., the oil drains down from the tank into the engine. Doesn't hurt anything, but adding oil to one that may start could get very messy when it pumps it all back to the tank.

The exhaust on this Honda is a Kirker and these were the most tunable with three baffles from small and quite to full comp and loud. You have to reject the pilots and main jets in the carbs and equalize them jet them until the bike does not bog on a full throttle fast twist with light brown color on the plugs and she will rip like you never thought possible as was the case with the Kawasaki’s we used to race tune and we could advance the camshaft timing and we even beat the Vance and Hines exhaust bike one time with one of our bikes in FL back in the 80s. Great exhaust system even the tunable super trap that fit the kerker worked well. I wonder if you know just how good of a tunable exhaust system you have plus I would put mikuni carbs with reverse flow jets on this bike as they are way more reliable than those stock carbs imo. Looking forward to see what you end up doing with this bike.

Great breakdown and insights, thanks! I am curious, with you flipping experience, what value range do you think you would resell this after a typical cafe remodel? And do you find it hard to find customers who buy a completed cafe style bike because they tend to be projects people want to say they did themselves?

THAT IS WHERE I HAVE MINE LISTED AND WHERE I BUY FORM AS WELL. I will not buy any without clear title. My qualifications are; has it been wrecked, or layed down hard, are all the parts with it, is the title in your name? I just want to make sure it is a good frame, engine running or not running is a concern but not a deal breaker, if I want it for myself, I most likely would rebuild it anyway, if I want it for a flipper, I want it to have descent compression and turning over, not seized up. I try to find lowest possible miles. Most of the time I replace the tires, unless I am going to ride it and they are decent and holding air. When I sell them I put new rubber on them for the customer. Unless stated as is. I want a straight frame and clear title, then I will build my own from scratch some times as well if it is a collectors item. Yep, time for new rings and hone out the cylinders.

Yes, there is another type of vintage bike. Since CB’s are now overvalued due to demand from hipster millennial tech drones trying to go analog (much like air-cooled Porsches), Kaws, Suzis, and Yamis are better values. Plus, starting with the Z1, Kaws have been dusting Hondas for kicks, and they look better too. With a few tasteful mods a KZ-anything looks sexy, you don’t have to chop it up to fix the styling. Every CB I’ve seen that hasn’t been hacked into a cafe racer has been hideous. Love the channel, brother. God bless Texas.

Most sellers are honest, but if not, the way they scam people is by removing one thing, and then they say it will run once it is replaced, (carb, throttle cable, etc) but in reality, the engine is total crap.

Before buying anything please take what ever it is your looking at purchasing to a professional. 2 months ago I had a guy bring me a “project bike” he purchased. The bike in question was an early 80’s KZ750 with KZ650 carbs that will not work the cheap pod filters flange blocked the various ports on the carbs and the carbs were filled with rust because the owner painted over a tank that was filled with rust. The electrical system was chopped up and grounding out and they installed a lithium ion battery but not the 245 dollar voltage regulator rectifier that stabilizes the current so it doesn’t get over charged. His total bill including a valve adjustment some of the valves has less than .0001 to zero clearance and a set of carbs that could run the bike totaled over 5600 dollars. To do the job right. On the surface you would have seen a new chain and sprockets pretty paint and all that but not noticed what a pro does and that’s forks with worn guides and carbs that would work well if at all. You would notice the shine and bling which lends credibility to fantastical story you’ll be given that all it needs is a car clean and fresh fuel. Take it to a pro. If your in the Colorado Springs area or just want to have a pro build you the bike of your dreams and spare you a nightmare give us a holla at Moto-Tech In Colorado Springs. mototechcolorado.com/ mototechcolorado.com/
