As a man I agree with your boyfriend. It amazes me how clueless women are when it comes to men. Women supposedly are more empathetic than men but the truth is women are less empathetic. Like for example most women think being polite is "if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all" but men don't want their but kissed and they don't like the silent treatment either. Also those are forms of abuse known as toxic positivity and emotional neglect.
