I scrub all the internal parts with alcohol and then lube. CLP on a boresnake down the barrel and the outside of the slide. I lube the rails of my pistols and AR bolt carriers with Lucas red, and my bolt actions and AK’s get lithium grease. The School of American Gunsmiths recommends a mix of motor oil and red grease.

You already have your lube needs under control, but one thing I've been happy with has been red synthetic grease thinned with synthetic ATF. I's given me the best of both worlds, and the wetting properties of the ATF, along with its high detergency makes cleaning a snap. I also use a home made bore cleaner mix developed by Ed Harris called "Eds Red", which is a mixture of ATF, Kerosene, Stoddard Solvent, and acetone. Lanolin can be added if desired, and the acetone can be omitted, but it will take longer to remove some forms of fouling, like shotgun wad residue for example. Recipes are available on line for anyone who might be interested. I did make one batch using Marvel Mystery Oil in place of the ATF, but had immediate rust issues so I added ATF to that mixture and increased the acetone a bit. It appears to me that MMO is not a rust preventative.

In a pinch WD-40 can be a cleaner but it is not a lubricant, despite its own advertising. Agree with you on grease and motor oil. Also, ATF transmission fluid is a great cleaner and also a lubricant in a pinch. 50/50 acetone/ATF is a great home brew mix. The acetone helps it migrates and then evaporates out.

I like 3 in 1 oil. Works great on motorcycle chains. And it don't freeze up like other oils. I had my rifle freeze up after taking it inside at lunch than back out doors. I now freeze my gun oils to double check they don't freeze up or get super sticky in freezing weather.

I recently bought a bottle of the Lucas brand gun oil. I've used their gas treatment for years and thought I'd give it a shot. No complaints so far. Strike Hold is a spray that's pretty good, kinda like the spray CLP.

I always liked the G96 in the aerosol can quite well. Unfortunately, it's no longer available, and I am down to my last can. It was common in the 1970's to 1980s.

Good advice. I'm surprised you didn't mention Hoppes Number 9. Am I showing my age? We can all apply your knowledge to other tools. Weed eaters. Chain saws. Tillers. Any tool with moving parts which need to keep moving. What do you use to keep rust away from hand tools? Hammers. Wrenches. Pliers.

We probably all have partial cans of this and that but I reach most often for mineral oil. Good for wood handles, good for metal parts, good for rust, good for lubrication., good for leather,... It may not be the absolute best at any of those things but it is good at all of it. Also, pretty cheap in bulk, non toxic and usually sold in a pharmaceutical grade that is good for skin and animal coats and is even a mild laxative. Hard to beat.

i switched over to lucas blue marine grease or chainsaw grease , i loaded up the old fashioned plunger applicator. then add a lite oil clp or atf fluid or wilson oil. i like to see them kinda mix, there is vids out on making your own. i found 2 gatorade bottle necks cut off and glued together , so you use 2 screw lids, is the perfect thing to keep a little xtra grease in the bag or truck.

wow awesome video ... I will look into these products ... living in northern Ontario my question how do you find them in the cold? I have been using sewing machine oil... from the H.A. Kidd and company. I use them in my firearms, and heavy sewing machine (for canvas and cotton). I have purchased it in bulk. Mind you most of my firearms are hand operated like pumps, levers, hinge, revolvers... The few semis I have are lubed with the same till the winter then they are cleaned and graphite base... what are your thoughts

It would have to be degreased with something like break cleaner well. Then inspected to make sure it’s in working order.
