I don't know a single person whose hair thrived with the Curly Girl Method. Like you, I tried to make it work, early in my natural hair journey and it wouldn't work no matter what products and techniques I tried. It definitely wasn't made for me or with my hair type in mind. One of the major issues people experienced when they first went natural was not having realistic expectations, as you said. You can't watch someone with 2b style their wash 'n' go and expect the same results when you have 3c hair. It's a breath of fresh air watching you talk about topics I feel that some naturalistas sweep under the rug - there are no one-size-fits-all products/techniques/hair typing systems!

As superficial as it may sound to some, jealousy and envy are very real! And that energy can manifest/transfer. Hair is EXTREMELY personal and alot of people cant handle others personal blessings. I suggest all curly haired ppl to cut their own hair and protect their own hair & energy ❤

girl yes! I feel like this is the type of conversation you can't have with everyone... The second the conversation about energy comes up its *woo woo* and annoying to talk to people who think that way lol. But I agree 100%.. Hair carries energy, and the stylist doing the cut comes with their own energy.. It's important to be very very picky when it comes to the person you chose to mess with something so delicate. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I feel validated! ❤️

I agree. The only person I allow to get close to my hair is my partner- I don’t even like females in my family touching my hair… energy is real and your hair is like a plant. Always protect yourself first 😤🌈💕💕💛✨✨🤍

Shampoo is literally my favorite hair product LOL. While I use a gentle, non-sulphate one for most wash days, I still like it to have a good lather and to be on the clarifying side each time. And then once a month I bust out my big girl sulphate shampoo, the Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo, to really make sure my scalp and hair are completely free of buildup. And when I tell you this monthly clarifying with the strong sulphate changed my hair for the better, I mean it! My curls have so much life and have probably gone up a whole curl type!

I'm natural 4b and I prefer sulfate shampoos and silicones. I won't even touch sulfate free. I love the extra volume I get from sulfates especially after losing so much of my hair after having covid. Since using silicones regularly my hair isn't a mangled tangled mess. I use Kerastase products exclusively.

our hair loves some silicones and sulfates! I hate that I had an era where I thought it was "bad" for my hair 😭 but I love Kerastase, so good choice!

Ya girl I’ve had to learn all these things thru trial and error. When you go to a hair stylist be very very VOCAL about what you want. Research, research, research. Just because a product doesn’t work for someone else doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. We are all different mamas. Thank you for the tips. You seem very real and natural in this video ❤

I love the transparency and honesty in this video.. I've been following you a couple years now, basically finding you just before my most recent big chop.. I'm with you in regards to being mindful of who you allow to cut and play in your hair, there's really something to be said about energy transference.. Only part I don't really agree with is the time and cost aspect.. I made the decision to be taught by a kinky/curly specialist on how to best care for my head of hair.. And I have never spent less time or money on my hair.. I'm only about 1.5yrs post that most recent big chop but my hair is growing thicker and healthier than it has since I was teen, I spend very little time doing it, and spend hardly any money on products now in comparison to the decades I spent trying to learn my hair.. I have the same 2 shampoos, 1 conditioner, 1 leave in/base gel, and 1 to 2 topper gels I alternate depending on the weather.. I reset my hair every 5-7days depending on activities with no refreshing or anything between sets.. It takes about 1.5hrs to wash style and set my hair.. With half of that being my under dryer time 😅.. Now I was taught by a pro on how to best care for my head of hair, so that could be the difference.. But being that was one 3-4hr appointment that happened ~1.5yrs ago, it was worth so much more than every penny.. I've sent a couple of my willing curly haired friends to my stylist as well and its changed the game for them as well.. It still saddens me to hear the narrative that kinky/curly hair is time consuming, expensive, laborious.. When there really are ways to cut the time and costs drastically.. I just don't like for folks to think their hair has to be this hard thing to deal with.. For anyone looking to do wear their hair, I suggest reaching out to a CIK alum stylist and learn your curls.. 😢 It cuts me a lil every time I have a woman walk up to me and say they wish they could get their hair like mine, when I know it's very possible with knowledge..

Please don’t apologize for “talking too much”. Your real supporters appreciate how informative you are. You can also let people know there’s a tool button in the top right corner that lets you control playback speed. I watch a TON of KZfaq videos so I usually watch videos on 1.5 and it speeds it up enough to still be able to listen & retain the information. Please be more consistent if possible with the videos, talk as much as you need to we appreciate you!

Sorry but your Advice works well for my hair type and density. I have very low porosity, hella high density, 3b-3c hair. The products you use/recommend also work well for my hair. I don’t compare our hair but what you did just low key worked when i tried it lol. I might section more than you but that’s just because i’m Hella extra. I don’t expect your methods to work for everyone but dayumm 😅 I’m lucky to have found you sis ❤. I’m currently at 15 inches in 2.5 years since big chop. (My big chop was nearly bald maybe 1 inch of hair). I definitely Gotta give you some credit as i binge watched all of your videos and sucked up your hair advice. Trimming, working out and drinking more water just took everything to another level.😅 Following your wash and go routine/detangling routine worked wonders for me and I’m very grateful for your content! I might hit waist length by the end of this year through mainly wearing wash and go’s. Many women told me that wasn’t going to be possible. I do what works… That’s all. 😘

Thanks for sharing your reflections. Avoiding thorough cleansng especially those who do not pay attention to ingredients has cost many set backs including hair loss in the natural hair community. As far as silicones go on my low porosity hair-- No thank you. Caution with the logic -- "They're in products for a reason". However, the addition of controversial ingredients in products often benefit the manufacturer and their profit margin way more than the consumer. Let's strive to be astute and happy in whatever state our curls, kinks, and coils may be in. We are much more than our hair.

I haven't even finished watching this video but already, yes!! The CGM had my scalp and hair in shambles. I remember my scalp was soo itchy and flaky and no amount of apple cider vinegar rinses were helping. Turns out I just needed a shampoo with sulfates 🤷‍♀️ And my hair loves silicone, so much slip and there's no issue with build up because the sulfate shampoo gets it off easily. I also use a flexy brush for detangling and I love it. I got it back in 2019 when there were maybe two reviews on KZfaq and it's still going strong :) I've been using the Aussie Moist line for around 2 years and late last year my hair (similar curl pattern to yours) was waist length. I'm not going to lie though, I got tired of it and started cutting off a few inches regularly. I actually want to shave my head over summer and just finally be able to properly feel the wind on my scalp 😅 My hair is the healthiest it's ever been and there's nothing "wrong" with it (no colour damage, no heat damage, no relaxer) but boy am I tired. But then again, my whole life my hair has been praised and I'm sort of terrified to shave it. It feels like getting rid of part of my identity, since I've always been "the girl with the hair".

May I ask how long ago you went back into shampoo? I don’t think it’s just the quality of shampoo I think it’s the hair type and condition of hair that matters when it comes to shampooing hair… The bottom half of hair receives a lot of wear in his high porosity in many cases so when we see people scrubbing down the middle the cleansing hair that has lost lubrication… I personally oil my ends before washing but I shampoo my scalp and I use a color applicator bottle to do so because shampoo literally did destroy my hair… There are situations when hair is too damaged to shampoo and there are situations when shampoo damages peoples hair like it did mine
