Richie Sambora has been a huge influence on me as a guitarist. From stumbling and buying a Bon Jovi video when I was a kid, I was hooked on to his playing. He certainly knows how to craft a great solo to. In this video we look at the Wanted Dead Or Alive solo and the techniques and ideas Richie uses.

Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.
After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.
Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)

Great to see someone recognising Richie as one of the more talented guitarists in the last few decades. The guitar workmanship on the albums Stranger in this Town, Undiscovered Soul and These Days are great reflections of his true abilities. Like yourself Mike I was addicted to those two live videos. Not only a great guitarist but also a fantastic vocalist. Ive had the pleasure of seeing the man live on a number of occasions and hopefully he gets back on the road again soon.

Richie is the reason I picked up a guitar.. under rated and appreciated. I was in a w.h.smith I was 15 These days had just been released and I heard 'Something to believe in' and I bought the album and the girl at the till was a fan and said 'have you heard the lead guitarists solo stuff ?'.. I had not, I bought Sambora's solo album (stranger). I heard Stranger in this town and I saved for a Squier and fender 10G amp starter pack I bought it from an Argos shop came with a VHS tape with wolf marshal giving a lesson took me a long time to play stranger but worth it.

Richie and These Days changed my life man, the reason i learned to play. The solo on My guitar lies bleeding in my arms kills me. And every time I see his playing of Hey God on that Wembley concert DVD, I go reaching for my guitar!!

Richie is the most important guitar hero in my life, Whatever glam metal period of 80s Bon Jovi, or 90-00s pop rock, his emotional solo shocks me every time.

This was great to hear so many of these iconic songs replayed, the look of joy on your face shows how much you appreciate richie sambora contributions to rock. His live performance of 2009 at msg i believe where he took over for jon to sing "I'll be there for you " is very soulful and the best live performance i have ever seen.

Bon Jovi was my favourite band in the world because of Richie. He inspired me to play guitar when I was 10-12 years old. His technique, his style is unique, my favouirte guitarrist of all the time.

Been a fan of Richey since the 90s. I too had the Evening with Bon Jovi, mainly due to me being a drummer as well, and Tico being a big influence on my playing as well

I’m totally with you on everything you say in this video. I discovered Richie and Bon Jovi around the same age as you did and I began to absorb his playing and it really shaped me as a player. I love everything he plays and I have used his influence in my own writing of guitar solos etc. A very underrated guitarist in my opinion and deserves more credit. Many years ago when Bon Jovi was on the way to the top my friend and I ran into Richie in a guitar store in LA. i am from New York and my friend and is from New Jersey. We introduced ourselves and Richie couldn't have been nicer. We hung out for over a half hour talking about home and guitars 🎸.

95’ in London I was there my parents took me I was 7 years old and I went to every uk gig after (until Richie left) and begged for a guitar and they managed to scramble some money together and get me a squire strat. My parents could afford lessons so I taught myself, Richie was a huge inspiration and I’m 33 now playing lots of guitars and amps and loving it. He’s massively underrate… nice work on this vid 🤙🏻

Do you have a video showing how Richie executes his harmonics? That's one of the things that really stands out in his playing. Pinch and notably the natural harmonic where he gets them loud and with sustain.

Great video dude! Richie is my all time favorite guitar player. Saw Bon Jovi for the first time on Have A Nice Day tour and have seen them a few times after. Richie is one of the reasons why I play guitar. There's no one like him.

Wanted is the song that made me pick up the guitar 3 years ago and Richie's always been and will always be my biggest inspiration. I love how he's putting his soul to the music. And I just can't wait when I'll finally become good enough to be able to play Dry County - the second solo is a complete masterpiece!

Ahh man, loved this vid! Richie is the reason I picked up the guitar, such a big influence in my playing. I've seen him with Bon Jovi a few times but also got to see him on his Aftermath of the lowdown tour in London and he was on fire!! The man is underrated and always plays for the song and doesn't go over the top.

Sambora was definitively one (among a few others) that got me to play guitar. Great Guitar player, a few months ago I got an Mx Sambora strat. The pickups and Di Marzio are incredible, you can get very close to the original Sambora sound. I upgraded the floyd rose to a 80 floyd with brass block. Your video is great, i love how you show how it is played without telling me note by note but rather the parts of the fretboard in which he plays.

Nice playing, and that's a lovely Tele. Quick story: I had a friend who was into the band in early '86. He had their 2nd album 7800°F on tape (at that time I had only seen a bit about them in Kerrang! mag, and they weren't well known here in the UK). That summer they released 'Slippery..', and by autumn they were really making waves. He had acquired a ticket to see them in Nov 86 at a small/medium theatre here, and loved them. I remember him describing Sambora's stage moves and playing. We didn't know it, but they were on the cusp of becoming one of the biggest bands on the planet. Cheers.

Richie plays with soul and from the heart. He’s not one of those guitarists who’s sound is what Gene Simon’s said ‘sounds like a bunch of angry bees.’ His style complements every song he plays.

Shout out from Seoul, Korea to you for the great video. Let me tell you this story, which may be unknown to 99.99% Sambora fans in the world. I remember reading that, in an interview with then-Korea's most popular rock magazine in the mid-90s, the greatest Steve Morse - Yes, that "Steve Morse"! - mentioned Richie Sambora and Jerry Cantrell among all those skillful players and virtuosos out there, saying they fabricate well-textured, good, distinctive solos and keep becoming better guitarists year by year, when asked who his favorite guitar players around these days are. It was unexpected and a big surprise even to me a longtime Sambora fanboy then. He's never been one of the best technical guitar players but I think it can be said he's one of those top notch guitarists who compose the most melodic, well-textured and impressive, memorable solos. In that interview, Steve Morse praised Sambora's playing for that reason, saying it really matters.

Saw Bon jovi in 89 at Wembley, they owned it, but I have to say Richie's playing and vocals were off the scale.. awesome stuff, and you're right he definitely plays for the song :-) Also saw him solo at a festival supporting Aerosmith on Clapham common festival, playing a strat thru ,maybe a friedman???, the neck pickup was one of the best tones ive ever heard, which says something considering Joe Bonamassa was also on the bill!!!

I’m just gonna say it; These Days is their best album, I think it was mostly written by Richie. It’s so mature and reflective and the guitar work is the best. I’m guessing you must be about the same age as me (43) so you’d have really got into guitar in the early to mid 90s, which I feel is Bon Jovi’s best period really. This is why Richie is such a huge influence on me and practically the reason I wanted to play electric guitar in the first place. His compositions are the best in the business, he’s also a hugely underrated singer and songwriter. Just love him, always, this is a great analysis ❤

About the same age as you and I also got those 2 DVDs. Massive fan in those late 90s and I was also a guitar player learning all those Sambora solos. Your story feels like a carbon copy of me and it's rare that I find other players that are Sambora influenced.

Awesome!! Even though I’m a blues/rock guy, Sambora’ guitar solo on Wanted Dead Or Alive is one of my favourites of all time! Funny enough one of my other favourite solos is actually Zakk Wylde’ on Ozzy’ No More Tears. Funny how we are often inspired by guitar players outside of our preferred genre.

Hello Mike! Richie along with Slash and Kirk were my first guitar heroes. They didnt just shred. It was all about making the solo fit the song. I remember we used to cover a lot of Bon Jovi songs. Sambora's cherry sunburst strat had a Dimarzio PAF Pro at the bridge. Texas Specials in the mid and neck positions.

...he also brought the Talkbox back to Rock and a not to be underestimated part of his sound is the Octaver (most octavs up). And for me he is the better singer with attitude. Thank you for the interesting insight, there were a lot of facts, I didn't know yet and I am a huge fan for a long time. Great Vid and I'm looking forward to see more... Richie is my main influence too. On that Live in London gig, he used is 59' burst on songs like Always and if my memory serves me correct...Hey God.

Yes! I love that burst. He sold it a few years ago back to Rick’s vintage guitar shop which is where he got it in the first place. That Les Paul, is THE Les Paul for me.

I might be wrong, but I think that the ones you are referring as "6ths" are actually "3rds", with the difference that the 3rd is being in a lower octave instead of the same octave of the tonic. For example, the first "6ths" that you show for the intro of "Dead or Alive", according to your theory, it is playing a D note as the 6th of an F note. However, F is not the tonic note, but D instead (Dead or Alive is in D). Please, again, correct me if I´m wrong. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Just suscribed! PD: I actually watched the live concert in London in 1995 just two days ago (for the first time, as far as I know). What a show!

No they are 6ths buddy. The first note is an A then playing an F note. And yes the Wembley show is phenomenal!
