Thank you so much for this! I’ve only bought the War Tribe Gis because of your recommendation. And honestly the sales they have make it worthwhile. Three months in and I now notice the significant differences between WT Gi’s and other brands in terms of how well it was made and the designs of the stitching as well as the drawstring loops and you’re absolutely right about the drawstring itself! I’ve seen people’s pants come down a lot from other brands and then having to retie it often and I never had to deal with that! I’m actually surprised that not too many know about WT. Nevertheless, thank you again!!

The Origin rash guards are on another level. The Gis are awesome too. The great thing about the Origin Gi is that you order the pants and jacket to fit. You should try them. I bought my daughter an Origin rash guard and she ended up getting more. The Origin rash guards are the only ones she wears now.

Hey, Kimberly! I've been enjoying your videos :) I'd love it if you made a video of an affordable gi haul (maybe less than $100 gi's), your first impressions, and how they hold up on the mat. And maybe one on more expensive gi's of $100+. I can't find any jiu jitsu gi hauls on youtube! I've been doing martial arts for about 20 years but just recently started jiu jitsu! Thank you for your videos and your tips!

So happy it was helpful! Honestly, I need to be better with a routine post jiu jitsu lol. If I feel really tight in certain areas, I'll roll it out but what I really need to do is roll out consistently to prevent tightness/injury.

Suggestions please! I love going to bjj but I find it hard to remember the combinations. I started a few months ago and I get frustrated because I can’t quite remember the combos when the teacher demonstrates, and when I roll, it’s hard to actually implement the techniques in realtime. I feel like I’ve forgotten the moves/can’t recall them under pressure. I feel like drilling helps a lot though! My training partners are also super helpful and sweet and help me during rolls but I’m afraid they’ll get impatient with me and I’m starting to get impatient with myself 🥴😂 have you all been there?

I'm a 3-stripe white belt currently. I'm just under 300# at 6'4". Not really sure why your thing showed up on my feed but I appreciate insight wherever I can find it. It's pretty hard to find stuff to fit right when you're my size and build, though it is getting a little bit easier as I lose weight. Anyway, I only just got to the stage where I could actually wear a pair of BJJ / MMA shorts sold online (most only go up to 42" waist), and I'm rocking 3xl Adidas rash guards that are a little looser now but still a bit short. My gym, like a lot of other ones, doesn't sell much that's over extra large, and there's no standardization at all in sizing once you're past xl. I'm not doing spats at all (I'm kind of afraid to) and I just go with bare legs, board shorts, and boxer briefs. Appreciate your tips on some standard gear. I noticed that certain t-shirts are made with polyester / spandex in exactly the same percentage as some rash guards and so I'm interspersing them with the Adidas long-sleeve rashguards (though they are thinner). As for gi's, you could do what I do and mix / match. When I started last year, I was about 50# heavier than now, and I bought an A5. The pants were so tight I couldn't wear them at all, and gave them away. The top fit but not well - I eventually gave it away as well. The only thing I have left from that Elite gi is the belt...which is actually a little long on me now. Most companies don't make an A-6; I didn't even realize that was an option until I did some research, and the Fuji A-6 I have now is the second BJJ gi I ever bought. However, the pants for that gi were so tight around my legs I couldn't wear them and they're still tight enough I don't wear them...maybe if I lose another 10# or so they'll be more comfortable. I wore sweatpants until I got a different brand legs and they're OK; even so, when I first got them I went commando a fair bit until I lost enough that my movement wasn't restricted too much by underwear. It's a good thing too, because another gi I'd got (advertised as an A-7, supposedly up to 320#) has arms that are almost but not quite too small (just a little bit tight), and pants that just ripped when I was taking another guy's back (thankfully I wasn't commando at the time; I've lost a fair bit of weight after all and I no longer have to do that except potentially with the Fuji ones). Don't mean to digress, just I've noticed some issues with some of those brands too; if you're outside the norm they don't seem to cater to you. Sanabul, Shoyoroll, Elite, most of the main ones people use and / or recommend. I've got mixed feelings on Fuji. It's heavy, and the pants are still a little tight, but at least it comes in A-6 and the top will fit and be durable enough for a year of heavy wear. I found a couple really good cheap brands on ebay and one that was mostly a waste, so I'm good for the next few months at least, but it's a challenge.

As a guy-but this also applies to women too!-I’m curious about the clothing here in general; you do a lot of rolling, ground work, holds, etc.-do these clothes ever wear out or tear (as to the latter it doesn’t look like it tears…)? And, is there anything that needs replacing after a specific period of time or such?
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 2 жыл бұрын
Not really! Nothing ever really tears. Sometimes after having and wearing a rash guard for a long time, the smells get trapped in the material. There's ways to sort of deep clean it, or sometimes it's just time to get rid of it lol.

Do you have any advice on the sizing for the Breaking New Ground shorts that you talked about- what size is the shorts in the video. Their website doesn't have a sizing chart for the shorts and I'm a little unsure since the pants are for men/unisex. I'm a US size 8-10 pants- I figured I'm probably a small since the pants are for made for men?

Hi , random out of topic comment , I ve commented in an older video of your before starting. I finally made it to the lessons, I now have gone to 3 lessons. it is like chess , but in motion , there are so much to remember which I find difficult but ok that is not the problem.... I ve already injured myself in various ways, whcih also is not a problem, but Im kinda afraid about the future ( to be injured/ not able to work etc). 2 things that makes it a bit difficult. my bjj partner. she is weird and makes it awkward , we have zero communication and chemistry, and I think it would be pretty important in a martial art with this much close contact to have. instead of enjoying the lesson, i just feel awkward too. we can't change partners in this first month , which is a month of basic learning . and secondly , I AM SO HECKING WEAK. I knew it , but even more than what I imagined. I will keep going and trying ... At the same time ( in different days) I am trying boxing too, again the one month of basic learning... just to compare , and to see what I will follow.

I’m new to jiu-jitsu too (about 2 weeks/ 8 classes now) so I probably don’t have a lot of authority to talk here, but one thing that helped me get over awkwardness when rolling was to really lean into it. Focus on learning, communicating playing the game of chess instead of the awkwardness which will make you react less awkwardly and in turn make her feel more comfortable and more likely to communicate (leading to less injury) As for your strength, one thing that might help is doing some extra strength training outside of bjj. If you don’t have time, to go to a gym, just try setting aside like 10 minutes a day to do some body weight exercises like push-ups, planks, etc. for example, one thing I do when I don’t have a lot of time is I’ll bust out as many push-ups as I can until I hit that point where I think I’ll fail the next one, and then I do at least 5 more. I do the same thing for other exercises. The part where you push yourself even when you’re tired is what makes the difference so don’t get frustrated because you will grow with time. It doesn’t beat going to the gym, but having a minimum amount of strength training a day will still make a difference. Side note, make sure you really focus on having good form when you push yourself past that limit or there is the possibility of injury but that goes with doing any exercise. I definitely not an expert but I hope what works for me might work for you.

@@irishawthorne7784 thanks for the answer! One of the times, the weird person weren't there. And I had another girl as partner. And everything was 100% better. I knew from the first 15' with the weird one that it will be.. Weird. Our vibes just don't mix 😁 I'm sure she feels the same. Plus all of this, is happening at Finland, people are already awkward without rolling on the floor with each other. If I end up continuing with bjj the good thing is that I will not be stuck with one person..
@irishawthorne7784
@irishawthorne7784 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sophia.K no problem! The only way to get comfortable with something uncomfortable is to keep doing it. I’m from the U.S. and normally we switch around partners when rolling so it’s never a problem for too long. I think you said the partner system for you was only a month so just stick it out. Once you can start rolling with other people, so definitely recommend rolling with as many higher belts as you can because those are the people who can really teach you ways to fix techniques/new techniques when you’re rolling

Question... I'm embarrassed to ask, but i must... Any tips for sweat and odor coming from down there.... ahem, lady region? I get so self conscious when I sweat bc when I sweat I sweat all around, and I feel so self conscious when i can feel myself sweating and I still have to keep rolling, especially going for triangles. I have a pair of wipes that I carry in my gym bag but then it gets too distracting to try to learn technique and/or have my partners wait on me bc I have to use the restroom. Hey Kimberly I love your videos you are the best! Now in my gym there are higher belt ladies that only wear sport bras when they roll and now new younger teen white belts are coping them. For obvious reasons such as they look up to them. Now our gym is too small to separate the teen and adult classes so we have merged classes. I understand wearing sport bras and short short for MMA is acceptable, but would it not be better if boys and girls sort of stuck to a respectable dress code such as Rash guard No-Gi second skin. I don't think its anyone's right to tell a girl what to wear and I find it amazing that the ladies in my gym feel that comfortable to wear what they want. I personally find this somewhat unhygienic for their skin and a little bit disrespectful to the guys of the gym seeing as they aren't rolling topless. Not that the guys in our gym feel this way and nor is rolling by any means sexy, but the sport bras are distracting to me and I am women. I am torn as I think girls should roll with full rashies, but I could be wrong and maybe ladies do this in other gyms as well? I am just too new to the sport to have a final opinion. What do you think?
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching!! Although I don't mind the whole sports bra thing under a gi, I can totally see where you're coming from. During the hot summer months I sometimes where only a bra hehe. But, my gym is a very family oriented gym, so we have a pretty strict policy with some clothing - girls can't wear biker shorts that are too short, guys can't wear only spats and if we do only wear a bra under the gi, it has to be a sports bra that provides more coverage. So it all comes down to the specific gym itself.

This is not meant to be mean at all, I promise! But if you're afraid of COVID.... BJJ maybe isn't the sport for you. The people I train with include ER docs, nurses, cops, firefighters, grocery store/costco employees.... All people who interact with the public every single day. Not one of the 3 gyms I have trained at over the last year have had a COVID outbreak. And they all stayed open during shutdowns. I don't think there is any sport that you'd basically be guaranteed to get COVID doing lol, close quarters wrestling, maskless, other peoples sweat dripping onto you, you're breathing into each others faces.... if you're worried, don't train. Or, keep training, and just make sure you are showering after every session and keeping your immune system healthy and strong!

"Staying safe," in terms of what society tells us to do for a virus isn't really possible in jiu jitsu, in my very honest opinion. I've seen people wear masks last year, but getting sweat into the mask and continuing to wear it isn't serving a purpose. During the lockdown, a lot of people trained with small groups to limit exposure to a ton of people - so that could be an option for you. If you're still interested in training jiu jitsu, your best bet is to take daily measures to keep your immune system healthy - adequate sleep, vitamin D from the sun, early morning or evening sunlight, limiting sugar intake and chemical ingredients in food, hydration, plenty of vegetables/fruits. :)
