Thank you so much for this video, I'm 37 and going to dive into this field because it just resonates so much with me. I am fortunate to have a younger sibling that is already in this field and is encouraging and supporting my journey down this road. Who would've thought my childhood nemesis is now my greatest ally at this stage in my life lol! Ahhhh Life is certainly weird. :)

Thanks for this uplifting and smoothing talk. I myself just recently started my journey in coding. I'm switching careers, and I think I made bad choices because I was always way too curious about coding since I was a kid ( Since I saw the movie Hackers - 1995, Iain Softley, I was amazed and thrilled with coding and technology). Well, doesn't matter. Here we are. I'm very grateful for your contribution because it helps us beginners to reduce our anxieties, fears, and just keep going strong. So thanks!

Good stuff, I'm much the same way in terms of learning visually. It's a bit crazy how diagramming or modelling a concept can just make it so much clearer, and so much easier to retain and recall.

Can certainly resonate with the whole "take a break" advice. Sometimes you get angry with the code and want to win against it defying you, but I've found taking a break and not spending too long on coding is the right way to address this.

Wow, it's like you were speaking to me. I'm dyslexic and some things take me longer to understand just because of the way I think. I too am very much a visual and audio learner. I'm still struggling with the class's concept despite understanding that it is really basic--your example is helpful. Great video and thanks for your honesty.

Thank you, I just started and have been doing codecademy pro for 1 week. I'm a smart cookie but learning something new and trying to apply it immediately makes me realize I don't know anything. I know that what the issue is, its the lack of applying what I'm learning daily. Eventually it will all make sense and your video affirmed that for me; thank you!

Thankyou so much for this advice. I realised last month that the only way to repair my career in GIS is to learn how to code/automate because that's what all the employers want these days... it wasn't like that when I started out 9 years ago. It's a daunting prospect because I get frustrated with debugging very easily. I really like your metaphor of writing an essay (because it's something I can relate to) and I'm now feeling significantly more positive.

I am in the beginning of a graduate degree involving GIS and am taking a Python scripting course for it. I have no prior coding experience and it has been so difficult, and extremely discouraging seeing my classmates blaze ahead of me. I decided to back up and punt and got the student subscription for codecademy and just 1 day in and I'm feeling a lot better about it. I hope your learning is going well! Good luck.

I have 35 years old and for my 8 years so-so of experience I think you nail it. Great video explaining what is programming for newcomers.

Ah, the way we articulate words we don't know. In the pre-Internet days I thought cache was pronounced French like it looks: "cash-eh". I was corrected by a pretty girl I had a crush on 😩🤣 And as the Internet rolled out to us Plebeans in the summer of 1995, I thought the dots in web addresses was called points. Luckily I only embarrassed myself when I read the correct pronunciation in MacWorld magazine.

Great advice! Very true. Learning to love debugging is probably the HARDEST hurdle to get over. And getting stopped by a really difficult bug is going to make you want to quit. But if you push through and finally solve those bugs, it brings so much relief and happiness that you will fall in love with coding....until the next bug. So expect to have this love-hate relationship and just know that the rewards far outweigh the struggles. Debugging is a major part of coding so don't give up and you will slowly learn to love it.

Even if they do poke fun at you, respond with an equally playful or hurtful joke, they will accept you, but more importantly figure out what you don't understand. That being the first and foremost priority, or you can ignore it and really look dumb later on when the information becomes important. They will make jokes whether you are a man or woman, no man is free from ridicule or humor. Learn to laugh and roll with it, everyone asks a dumb question, if it even is a dumb question, time after time.

I am on a Robotics team at my middle school, and I started to learn how to program in blockly. I am currently using Codecademy to learn how to program in JavaScript for when I go into high school. Every high school member told me that Java is a better programming language and it gives you more freedom, so that really made me want to learn all the more. Now that I am trying to learn it, Java seems pretty intimidating. This video, however, gave me the what I needed to keep trying to learn JavaScript.

They said "noone" cares about your age, then gave advice to do something you seem to be already doing. That person may be reading a lot into your comment that you didn't say. You said simply that you're 15, and didn't ask for advice. :) Big leap there, 3lloOH, and tell everyone I said Hello! Don't tell them how old I am when you all get together because I'm sure they don't care. Also David, it's great that you want to learn as much as you can!
