Why is it hard for a highly trained professional to speak or report about mistakes made by him or her?
Jean-Pierre believes that every staff member in an organization should feel safe to use her or his voice to speak about safety issues, mistakes and how to learn and improve.
He takes you on a trip through his Airforce- and civil aviation career to show the added value of Just Culture in High reliability organizations.
He talks about his, initial, internal resistance against speaking about his mistakes and he sees the same resistance within the culture of health care professionals.
He truly believes that Just Culture made him a better and safer professional pilot and operational manager.
Jean-Pierre is a retired Military and Airline Pilot, and now Co-owner and CEO of Yes Human Factors Ltd.
As an Operational Officer from a Royal Netherlands Airforce F-16 squadron he was sent to the first Bosnia-Herzegowina war in the early 90’s. During this time he was responsible for the tactical operations for 18 F-16’s.
His last job in the Royal Netherlands Airforce was deputy Head of Flight Operations.
In 1994 he switched from military to civil aviation. He was involved in training and examining as a Type Rating Instructor and Examiner.
Jean-Pierre is co-founder of YES Human Factors Ltd. A training and Consultancy organisation specialized on Human Factor in “High Reliability” Organisations.
Jean-Pierre believes in the importance of a safe work environment. To create and maintain such an environment just culture and training on teamintelligence are an essential aspect. Work environments where people dare to speak up will lead to optimum decisionmaking, also in crisis situations. Not overly convinced by the view that aviation has had just cultures for years; we have talked of it but remain very reactive still. Its easy to convince yourself or be convinced that a just culture exists yet most organisations have had minimal training on what it actually means, put little effort in to creating the right culture beyond the policy and often remain focused on individual acts or omissions. I would argue that most mistakes and deviations remain hidden and only if there is a visible negative outcome do they get reported. Whilst Just culture is, I believe, still the right thing to do, it has been hijacked by old school mindsets that feel a policy & some training changes culture.
