What if modern IndyCar's had CART V8 Turbos?

Like many race fans, I love the golden eras of racing, especially CART in the late 80's, early 90's. The sound that the insanely powerful V8 Turbos created is a perfect symphony. But what if IndyCar went back to using V8s???

With today’s development and a lift on RPM, the 2.65l V8s would probably make over 1200hp...

They would easily make that. They made 950 to 1000hp in the mid 90s for qualifying.

V8s seem to have a nice balance of power (with a turbo especially), sound and efficiency. F1 used v8s for 8 years and they sounded fantastic.

It would be the beast of all beasts because the aero on a modern car has incredible cornering speeds. Way more than the v8 era cars had aero wise. And combine that the beast engines of the v8 era that have far greater straight line speed, you’d have the best of both worlds and would shatter records.

I was at the German 500 at the Lausitzring in 2001. The cars seemed really loud to me. Were they really loud in comparison to the 80s and 90s?

They were much louder and the exhaust was higher pitched due to the engine competition driving development. It was most pronounced on the ovals, as long as they could hold together.

@Sonic84 I am not 100% sure, but I remember hearing that on superspeedways, 1 bank of the V8 exhaust was routed to the turbo and the other bank straight to exhaust. On short ovals, road & street courses both banks exhaust were routed to the turbo. On superspeedways, the 2.65L was mostly running at high RPMs and did not require as much exhaust to build turbo boost & hp. Today's Indycars run higher boost pressures (700 hp) on road and street and less at the Indy 500....maybe 500 to 550 hp.

That was a golden era and I watched it since 1997 homestead race, won by michael andretti. Needless to say that I'm a fan of andretti and these roaring 2.65 turbo v8. These emotions of that high revving motors I really miss the most and the wide powerband they had over more than just 500rpm on a shift that time. Bring back those fucking turbo v8s!

The V6's could make a very similar noise too. They just need to crank up the RPM's another 1,000-2,000.

Listen to that whine!! That engine sounds amazing. FYI Cosworth has a great 2.4 L V8!!!! Much better than the soccer mom in a mini van V6. 12 year old chassis needs replacing also.

Yes they will never go bankrupt because they are ran by greedy team owners who made the rules to help them dominate every race. Cart sucked. Everyone came back to Indy because cart didn’t make Indy. Indy made cart.

@@freedom6919741 And yet one of those greedy team owners you described now owns the IRL and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. What we have now is a watered down, neutered version of CART, spec cars, spec engines, and less ovals along with a reduced month of May. Yes, the Indy 500 still exists, but judging by the ratings and sponsors, no one outside of Indianapolis really cares after May.

You can't go faster! Money wise or safety wise. This year is proof of how great a series it can be. Equal cars = means better driver exposure. That the stuff legends are made out of. F1 is ruined by 1 team being better than everybody else. Lewis is far from the greatest driver to win as many races as he has in the last 5 plus years. Love to see them rotate the drivers in the machines. That something I'd pay to see. But branding has ruined that !
