By the way you were talking at the beginning of the video, I thought you'd go the "Miguel de la Paz surviving" route. That way, Portugal joins the Castile crown at roughly the same time as Aragon, and an Avis dynasty would be more likely to continue the international approach set by the Catholic kings (good relationships with England and the Habsburgs to contain French power while having free hands to expand into the Southern Mediterranean and the different colonial routes), since without the Habsburgs and the Flanders lands there wouldn't be a reason to attempt an European Empire. Plus, it would have been easier for these three crowns to maintain some more individuality in their ambitions, being Miguel Portuguese. Interesting video nonetheless.

Portugal would be Spain. The concept of Spain was nothing more than a cultural or geographical name, there was no Spanish state yet, there was a dinastic union between Castille, Aragon and Portugal. Therefore, Portugal would be included in the concept of Spain, like Aragon and castille. Btw, the Spanish armada eventhough it was destroyed during the invasion of England, didn't meant that Spaniards stop being the most powerfull armada in the world, the British were defeated soon after that during the contraarmada, for example. It was not until the reign of Philip IV and Charles II that Spain really started a rapid decline which ended up in the peace of Utrecht, after the war of succession, in which Spain losed all its territories in Europe except for the ones in the Iberian peninsula and the Balearic Islands. After that it would be a power, yet not the most powerful, and after the lost of the colonies Spain ramained as a weak country, not a power anymore.

What if Miguel de la paz stayed alive? Miguel de la paz was the recognized heir to Portugal, Castile and Aragon. He was the grandson of Isabella and Ferdinand and the son of the king of Portugal! By his birth he would be the perfect unifier without the grubby Hapsburgs getting anything. When it comes to the Iberian Union timelines it is really Portugal or the Hapsburgs.

Some detailed suggestions: What If Julius Evola Took Power: Following the increased liberalization of Italy after WW2, radical traditionalists begin gaining influence and prestige. In the 1950s, during the apex of consumerism, Julius Evola manages to become the leader of the nation. He restructures the government, creating a strong state based on the principles of asceticism, patriarchy and a warrior ethos. He is supported by conservative nobles and a radicalized youth, but liberal elements seek to bring him down. Evola purges all traces of the previous system, including the Catholic Church’s privileges, and sets Italy on an isolationist path. The nation becomes something of a European North Korea, protecting its borders and eschewing modernity. Evola inspires many people around the globe. Similar movements pop up around Europe, with their members desiring a return to the natural state of society. What If The US Joined The Central Powers REMAKE: Following the sinking of an American vessel by British ships, the United States declares war on the United Kingdom and its allies. After years of brutal warfare, the Central Powers are successful; though it’s a pyrrhic victory. Revanchist movements take power in Western Europe. Germany is forced to open up a front in Eastern Europe to subjugate the region. Canada is occupied by American troops. The soldiers that return home from the Canadian and European campaigns are physically and mentally destroyed. Though the war was supposed to be an expression of American greatness, it served as the death of the American dream. The puppet government installed in Canada following the war is unpopular, as it attempts to Americanize the Canadian population. This disgracing of Canadian culture leads to the election of an extremist leader who seeks to shake off the American yoke. Canada, Great Britain and France soon form an axis to coordinate their next plan of attack. What If Colonialism Never Ended: During the 19th-century, different colonial societies spring up around Europe. These organizations relay information regarding exotic cultures and peoples, as well as settlement opportunities. After several decades, these groups become established elements of high society, eventually taking on the form of pressure groups that represent colonial interests. Individuals from these groups often gain high positions in various colonies, sometimes gaining control themselves. The outcome of several African and Asian wars are changed due to their interference. Following WW1, these groups campaign for a softer approach to the Treaty of Versailles, so as to allow the Germans to keep their colonies. These groups eventually band together, forming a massive Pan-Colonial Society. Their goal is to unite various colonies into a single superstate, united by trade and a common European heritage (sound familiar?). What if the Caucasus United: During the Russian Civil War, various chieftains and politicians in the Caucasus overthrow local leftist leaders. To fight against both the Red and White forces, these disparate groups unite into Transcaucasia. This nation is resource rich and diverse. Local nations have cultural and political autonomy, and as such the country is a hodgepodge of different systems. Some areas are liberal and democratic, others are conservative and hierarchical. Some states host elections, others refuse. Different political organizations exist, but some are more influential and popular than others. Transcaucasia retains friendly relations with most countries, except Russia. This opens up the possibility for the nation to trade with Germany during the war, securing their much-needed supply of oil. That is, if WW2 even happens the same way it did in our timeline. American Israel: A deal is struck between the American government and Jewish leaders during the period of Jewish immigration in the 1800s. To end ethnic tension, the American government gives the Jews their own space. The Jews agree, seeing this as a way to end their poverty. This new area, "Gideon", would first be an autonomous area, but would later become an official state. Here the Jews have legislative control, their religion is prioritized and their businesses dominate. In exchange for self-determination, the American government curtails Jewish influence in media, pop-culture and economics in the rest of the country.

@Monseiur Z why would England be even able to take Gibraltar at all in this timeline here? That makes no sense. During the War of Spanish Succession from our timeline Spain had been completely bankrupted by many wars. With a continued Iberian union, both countries of Spain and Portagul would be stronger. Even with a war over the succession, there's no way that Britain would be allowed to simply take Gibraltar from the Spanish just like that. Also King Phillip II of Spain wasn't actually a useless King. He was called by his subjects as Phillip the Prudent. Spanish culture also flourished during his reign as well. If the Iberian Union is continued here, and Philip is sensitive to Portuguese needs Spain could have easily allied with the Portuguese fleet to crush the English like the did in otl. Had a few changes during Philip's invasion occurred as a result of all the butterflies flying around, England could turn out to become a Catholic Nation once again. The Spanish Armada only was really defeated thanks to its original commander dying right before its campaign and bad weather.

@@MonsieurDean Had Miguel de Paz survived all three Kingdoms of Iberia would have united earlier. He was also the Prince of Portagul. This Spain would utterly dominate the New World and Europe even longer. Aragon basically controlled the Western Mediterranean during this era with its control over Sardinia, Sicily, and Naples. Portugal was a major naval player in the West and had a head start in discovering Western Africa and the New World. Castile was a strong continental land power especially with the Spanish Tercios of this era being the gold standard of militaries of that age. This state would easily have been a rival for France or England in this time period. The combined might of these three Kingdoms might even create the notion of Reconquista extending to Roman North Africa under a more zealous monarch. They might even recreate the title of Imperator totius Hispaniae, or Emperor of all Spain which was first used by Alfonso X of Castile who reunited all the Iberian Kingdoms temporarily under one person during the Reconquista. Without much involvement in the HRE , Spain would have very little reason to respect the Imperial Authority of a German Emperor. Keep in mind that the Spanish of otl had the surviving Palaiologoi sell them the title of Roman Emperor after Constantinople fell in 1453. An enlarged Spain not distracted by Austrian affairs, might very well start another set of Crusades in the levant or even against the Ottomans themselves. Though I don't know how successful this would be since this era was also the peak of the Ottoman Empire's military power.

But there were problems. The poles would probably Polonize the Russians like the Lithuanians and Ruthenians . The Russians persecuted non-Orthodox people while Poland-Lithuania allowed religious freedom. Russia was a tsardom where Poland-Lithuania was a Republic. But it would unite most of the Slavs. If they did that, Poland-Lithuania-Russia should form a personal union with Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) to further unite the Slavs. Poland-Lithuania-Russia would have a large army and population, which in turn could be used to drive the Ottomans out the Balkans and they could control trade with the east. Despite the downsides, It sounds pretty cool. But would the capital be Warsaw, Krakow, or Moscow? How would the Commonwealth interact with Sweden? Would Finland still be under Swedish rule? If there is no Partition of Poland, what happens? How does the Commonwealth play in the Napoleonic and World Wars?

@@porchofgeese_crockpot Thered likely be a massive civil war at some point within the next century where in Russians and Ukrainians feel disenfranchised with the CW, but i feel before that Sigismund would use it to his advantage to regain the Swedish throne, I really feel that in an instance where this happens its a world dominated by Slavs and even if Russia broke away Poland would still be the dominant force. This would lead to a quicker end of the Swedish empire and ottoman empires i feel, since in the great northern war it took a massive alliance to defeat Sweden, under the leadership of Russia's greatest leader, and the ottoman empire even collapsed in the face of a dis-unified slavia and powerful Russia, with Poland and Russia unified to fight the Ottomans they'd fall even faster. at some point Russia may break off and regain its independence but this likely would result in a Russia equivalent to the power of modern day Croatia, absolutely minuscule, which by that point Siberia would likely already be conquered by Chinese or Central Asian Khanates. Poland in the end IMO would control the Balkans, Southern Sweden, Finland, and up to the Urals if those arent already claimed by another power. It would dominate mainland Europe and likely be the equivalent of an aggressive Germany in our world, constantly facing off against its neighbors due to her aggressive territorial aspirations. also yeah, the capital would still be Warsaw since Polacks would be the dominant power and the dominant power would never change the capital of its nation to a conquered territory. This would be a bleak world for my Fellow Russians. (also btw thered be many more world wars due to an earlier Polish aggressive stance pissing off all of its neighbors, many more wars would break out over this and Russian and Ukrainian and Ruthenian minorities would be persecuted)

Felipe the second was a great king and reach the heights of the Spanish power around the world, later its son Felipe III will reing over a period of stagnation and only with Felipe IV will power start to shift to France and the Netherlands. In the Anglo-Saxon mindset the Spanish Armada seems to be like the end of the Spanish empire but it was for Spain a wound, a painful one and easy to recover from. Spain will ot suffer a mayor defeat until 1648a at rocroi and kept being the strongest naval power well into the 18th century being only clearly cemented after the battle of trafalgar. The final blow that would kick Spain out of the Great power club will only come in 1898, ending a process of slow decline that started in 1648 with Felipe IV not before, with Felipe II Spain will reach its maximum expansion in Europe, he was a wise, working, serious, gifted, and committed King. His only blunder was not giving the empire a heir fit for the job for 3 generations.

I see there are some videos on youtube entertaining the thought of a union between Portugal and Spain. But SERIOUSLY, why has no one made a video about a union between Portugal and Brazil?? I know it would be more like Brazil "swallowing" Portugal, but then again the same would happen in a union with Spain as well (except that a union with Brazil would not lead to a foreign language being imposed on the Portuguese). Also, look at France keeping the French Guiana up to this day! The same thing thing could happen in reverse (with the bigger member of the union located in South America)!!

a very good presentation. however, i'm quite certain that if the portuguese and spanish royal families understood that they have more to gain from consolidating their power, it wpuld have made more sense for them to be more careful financially, even before the early 1700's when portugal was able to repay it's national debt. had there been an alliance between england and this latin super-power, it's possible that the armada wouldn't have been launched in the first place, and even earler on, king henry VIII would have been convinced to teach his daughter mary how to govern as queen, since he wouldn't want to divorce catherine of aragon. with mary tudor as his wife, philip II of spain may have been able to see the wisdom of allowing his wife and her advisors in the english court to govern england with as much independence as possible in time, the british and the portuguese would have consolidated thair naval skills, and had a joint armada been built it would have possibly sailed under sir francis drake rather than against him. the scots, welsh and irish peoples would have been granted independence or even not conquered at all, to form a mini-empire of celtic people. arguably, the imperial family of the super-power would have had to realise, that tolerance toward protestants is something of a neccesity, for the whole thing to function. when the earthquake of lisbon would have struck in the 18'th century, with so much wealth restoring power and government would have been easier. the entire sphere of american colonies would have been under the anglo-spanish alliance, and therefore it's exact date of independence is unknown. as we approach the late 18'th century, the island of corsica is still in italian control. a young man called bonaparte goes to study in the military academy in france, but returns to italy as a military reformer and unites the italian city-states after installing his siblings in positions of power and crowning himself emperor. the latin super-power grows after an alliance with the new italy is declared. france, however, for most of it's history after the hundred years war, is very apprehensive of the latin colossus. the french kings have no choice but to seek an alliance with the habsburgs, the dutch, and as a last-ditch attempt, the german kingdoms. the latter eventually decide to unite much earlier than 1871, possibly given such advice by the french. after succesfully defeating the berbery pirates, the latin superpower decides to free greece, the balkans, and eastern europe from the ottomans. the goal is to besiege istanbul directly until freedom is granted to the christian countries. the crimean war is thus prevented. on to 1914: since the peoples of the balkans, including serbia, now guard their independent sovereignity jealusly, they establish a multi-national army, that succesfully prevents austrian imperial ambitions. left without any imperial conquests, the habsburg throne agrees to an empire with the germans and the french.

That would have never happened. The closest possible scenario is if Trotski had come to power in the USSR instead of Stalin: he might have tried pushing into Western Europe, but that would have led to a coalition of European powers against the USSR. This could have degenerated into a long, messy conflict, but it wouldn't have been a "world war".
