@@mllesamedi84 Actually, in Hungarian we don't make difference between genders while we speak about someone, because in Hungarian we haven't got the reason for that. The personal pronoun hasn't got the role to define the gender of a person. We already know the gender of a person, if we already know the person, but we have different forms of words for each gender, so that's why we don't need to say it with the personal pronoun. Maybe it sounds weird idk, but why we should say each time the gender if we know?

@@blasius7704 Yes, I noticed that, talking with Hungarians (but for speakers of most european languages it feels strange, bc the pronouns are very important). @@mllesamedi84 I can't decide that is wrong or not, that the Hungarian language isn't using the personal pronoun to specify the gender. As a native Hungarian speaker, I feel useless to define it every time as I said before (or maybe I didn't say why, but I explained that we instantly know the gender from words, expect personal pronouns), may this language have different advantages and disadvantages in contrast with the most European language. Like, can be a positive thing that we have a lot of synonyms with the same meaning, so we can choose from them, and we can decide with them how we want to formulate a sentence. We can choose softer and more beautiful words if we want to say something kinder. That's a thing that have some languages, but in English we can't do this in this way I think. May it has more words, but fewer synonyms.

At the start of your you said that the Habsburg monarchy has roots in the Holy Roman Empire, but thats not really the case. Habsburgs were emperors of HRE, but HRE as such doesnt have much to do with the creation of the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburg Monarchy was a conglomeration of feudal realms under the rule of the Austrian Habsburgs, its came into existance in 1526, when Louis II, King of Hungary and Bohemia, was killed at the battle of Mohacs, fighting against the Turks. With him dead, the Jagiellonian dynasty in Hungary and Bohemia had no male heirs, and the succesion passed to Ferdinand von Habsburg, Archduke of Austria, who was married to the sister of Louis II. With that, the Austrian Habsburgs held Austria, Hungary and Bohemia, which became their core possessions, amongst others, altogether informally known as the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1804 they were formally unified as the Austrian Empire, which reconstituted itself as Austria-Hungary in 1867.

@@Licht.von.Stein. The Habsburgs have been ruling in Austria since the 13th century, and they already had few of their members as the rulers of HRE, by 1526. However the position of the Emperor of HRE, was largely symbolical already, by this point. And Austria on its own was only a minor power, more so than either Bohemia or Hungary on their own. Its was only after 1526, with the thrones of Hungary and Bohemia, that they would become a major European power.

Actually, the 1st Habsburg to ascend the throne as emperor was Frederik III. in 1452 This one is especially important because during the civil war between him and his brother at the start of his reign, Slovenes sided with him. As a reward for their loyalty, he elevated Carniola into a duchy by adding the imperial crown to the Carniolan eagle.

It makes a lot of sense due to the cultural community of these lands. Its economy was booming, in spite of criticism it had a quite balanced internal policy--all languages were official, army battalions were formed according to the native tongues of the soldiers, the banknote had an inscription in 12 languages, the whole empire was very liberal--the only country in Europe where Jews could become army officers of any ranking. Some minor border adjustments would be natural, but 80% of its population is still proud that once was part of a great empire and of an economic as well as of military power. There was a distinctive work ethic, people could travel, settle freely wherever they wanted, there was a very good administration, education, railway network with precise statistics, a very cohesive, smoothly running economy and the intelligentsia spoke at least 2 but rather 3 foreign languages---so something the EU is only dreaming of...

That's true. My region really benefited from Austrian rule. After the Empire fell apart it's been going badly in here. Polish and Czech nationalists split the region, destroyed it economically and culturally. During the Empire's rule, Poles, Czechs, Germans, Jews and Silesians lived with each other relatively peacfully here. Now, there are no Jews and Germans for obvious reasons, Polish and Czech people have fought over my part of Silesia, and we Silesians are denied our historical and cultural rights to our own state, the recognition of our nationality and our language. It's true we weren't granted that in the Empire too, but we weren't discriminated against and we probably would have achieved recognition very long ago if we have stayed in the Empire

@@ekstraworszt6792 Austrian here, i wonder how much of the drama in the balkans is mainly or soley due to yall being occupied by soviets and the well known love of russia pushing their money on all our politicians to this day for their personal benefit, given it is now no secret anymore that russia always wanted to go back to a reunion of the udssr, it is quite logical to keep the split off territories in a rather unstable state to make this goal easier to achieve. hell most of western europe only realized at the start of this invasion how much influence russia has on most of our rightwingparties, its simply logical that this would be even worse in eastern europe right? most i think dont even know that we wouldve ended up in soviet slavery too if not for the neutrality that allowed us to escape it and were clearly doing better than most of the balkans because of that, given we went from the poorest to the 14th wealthiest in terms of gdp per capita within only 3 generations. i hope most of us in europe agree that the possibility of getting rid of russian influence for good thanks to ukraine could lead to an exciting future and closer, more stabilized relationships with you all, im tired of the drama, we all are, we could equal america, china and india no problem if stabelized lets be real.

@@ChrisKAy91 Western Balkans were never occupied by Soviets. Tito rebelled against them almost immediately after the war - because he could, there were no Soviet troops on Yugoslavian soil. The ethnic or even cultural tensions there have much longer tradition. Pre-WW2 Yugoslavia was a powder keg in itself, with constant bickering between Serbs, Croats and others. Earlier - the Assassination was a Balkan job. I would attribute this to the Ottoman occupation and influence. In the Western civilization everything is focused on the individual. The East is more clan oriented. Equaling USA - impossible with a centralized EU. The German mentality is completely different from the others. The byzantine EU laws (copy pasted from German legislation) killed the industry everywhere outside Germany - France, UK, the European South. The Eastern Europe is currently in the middle income trap. The only way out of this is decentralization and diversification of laws (and currency areas), keeping only the single market without tariffs.

I disagree, on the statement that the Empire would not have survived if ww1 didn't happen, as one of the reasons the assasination took place and happened is because, all of the next monarchs who were to take the throne had a plan to federelise the Empire, now that would have been very good for Austria-Hungary, but not so for Serbia, which wouldn't have been then able to spread its idea of greater Serbia, slavic Oppression...

Technically speaking, Czechia does not have entirity of its territory within the former borders of Austria-Hungary. After WW1, Czechoslovakia had received a small piece of German territory, which did not belong to Austria-Hungary. So, if you were to recreate AH in its 1914 borders, the Czech republic would still remain on the map, tho only at about twice the size of Liechtenstein.

Whoa! Fantastic video, General! Thanks! And one of my favorite topics to talk about, because I used to live in Slovakia for 2+ years between 2016 and 2018 and have spent a lot of time in its neighbouring countries and some small cities that have a very fascinating history! I won't speak on behalf of anyone, but when I had lived there I did notice very subtle regional changes, not only in terms of religion and in its practice, but also I did understand most of the reasons why the Dual Monarchy had dissolved. Generally speaking, Czechs and Slovaks get each other extremely well, but even they have their differences and that's why they split up in 1993. Slovakia is more religious and conservative and is more similar to Hungary in some aspects in terms of culture and cuisine, while the Czech Republic is closer to the Germans and Austrians in terms of mentality and approach towards their everyday life. Many of these countries have started to get along better than they used to by way of Schengen and the EU's overall common politics have contributed largely for these countries to have better functioning economies and public services in comparison to... say, the Balkans. The non-EU member states (Bosnia and Ukraine) would largely benefit from such a reunion. Unfortunately, nowadays, the EU in its current state is heading towards the problems that the Habsburgs used to face back when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a thing. There is a lot that history can teach us and so, I hope that the politicians in Brussels and Strasbourg have learned their lessons and do more to improve the relationships between the member-states even further as we all benefit from a stronger and better functioning European Union!

First, it is interesting that you are not the first person to make such video. Even though out of all of Hungary's neighbors, the ties with Austria is probably the strongest for Hungarians, the idea of the Dual Empire is out of the question presently. Probably for the same reason that caused the revolution in 1848. But, one thing has to be mentioned.. different forms of art and architecture flourished during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that could not be matched any time later.. A few years ago the government has started a program to rebuild Buda Castle and its surrounding to its former glory as were in the days of the empire... If you think Budapest is a beautiful city, lot of credits are due to the influence which it had during the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Slovak coat of arms is based on the one of the hungarian empire (cross on 3 hills representing Tatra, Fatra and Matra). It was "slavic-ised" by changing hill colors to blue and they still represent the same hills, although Matra is in Hugary. So technically one does not have to include the slovak one, simply revert back.

@@zsombornagy4787 Well, keep being proud hungarian. This is the official interpretation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Slovakia It is important to realize that nationality and citizenship definitions were not clear at the time (started somewhere around 19th century). This is usually the starting point of misunderstanding. It is actually hard to say what was slovak and what was hungarian, or even austrian. It is one thing to have a ruler that is hungarian, another who was living on his land. So by saying the coat of arms was hungarian is like saying it never represented Felvidek people (mostly slavic, slovak nationality did not exist). I hope you understand that part of the history is as much slovak as it is czech, polish or hungarian. And I stand my point that taking Arpad's house symbol as coat of arms is nicely showing the common history and evolution. One can also say that slovak flag stole hungarian coat of arms and russian base flag. Which would be utter stupid :-) It's basically the same thing as czech and luxemburg coat of arms.

@Harahvaiti
@Harahvaiti 3 жыл бұрын
In KuK days there was no such thing as Serbocroatian, that was invented in Tito's Yugoslavia. And it died with it. Croatian is not a dialect of Serbian or vice versa.
@lordkenten4136
@lordkenten4136 3 жыл бұрын
@@Harahvaiti Nonbiased linguist beg to differ. It is a fact that all 3 are easily mutually intelligible. At least they were in past I am not sure whether this has been altered by the post Yugoslav governments. But if it has then it was easily mutually intelligible back then so it would make since for them to label it as such. Besides even if you except the lie that they have always been different language then way was it so easy for Yugoslavia to establish a single language. You simply can't do that unless languages are very closely linked and therefore easily mutually intelligible. The for dialects of the same language.
@Harahvaiti
@Harahvaiti 3 жыл бұрын
@@lordkenten4136 spare me of those "non-biased" linguists whose only defense of their insisting on SerboCroatian being a real thing is - Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian nationalists are against us. Mutual intelligibility is one thing, being one and the same language is another. One can say the same for Czech and Slovak or Scandinavian languages, they also have high percent of mutual intelligibility. Yugoslavia tried to establish one and the same language, but it failed, there never was a common standard for entire Yugoslavia, "Serbocroatian" or "Croatoserbian" was an officialy imposed name of language that never truly existed. In Croatia then same as now, language was used with Croatian grammar and vocabulary and in Serbia with Serbian grammar and vocabulary. And vocabulary and grammar of standard Croatian and standard Serbian have significant differences. Standard languages, not dialects. If we add Croat dialects and Serb dialecs into the story, then difference is even greater. So to declare two languages as "dialects of one and the same language" is not only ignorant but also insulting. If two men are married with nearly identical twins, that still does not mean they have the same wife, does it? Only that they are sisters and they have same mother. Same goes for Croat and Serbian language. Besides, Croatian is internationally recognized language (official language of the EU as well), Serbian is also standalone language now. What ever product you buy in our part of the world - you'll find its description separately in Croatian and in Serbian. Linguists can have their fun and live in the past. Nobody cares.

Thank you for this nice video, very detailed. After the ancient Roman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian is my favorite (we are not few in Italy in thinking so) for the culture, art, civilization and the social welfare it embodied. It would have been wonderful if Emperor Franz Joseph had unified Italy himself, within the Empire, obviously also granting us Italians (and other nationalities) the same rights as Austrians and Hungarians have, instead of rejecting every request coming from the Italians of the empire. I'd like to know what you think of the idea of reuniting the Empire with all of Italy inside, this time all of it, not just the North, in a federal form and guaranteeing all nationalities the same rights and duties.I would also be curious to know the opinion of the Austrians, but I fear that they still consider us italians responsible for the end in 1918 (which is not entirely true).
