Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich breaks down seven ways to tax the rich and raise trillions in revenue.
Watch More: 12 Myths About Taxing the Rich ►► • 12 Myths About Taxing ...
Income and wealth are now more concentrated at the top than at any time over the last 80 years, and our unjust tax system is a big reason why. The tax code is rigged for the rich, enabling a handful of wealthy individuals to exert undue influence over our economy and democracy.
Conservatives fret about budget deficits. Well, then, to pay for what the nation needs -- ending poverty, universal health care, infrastructure, reversing climate change, investing in communities, and so much more -- the super-wealthy have to pay their fair share.
Together, these seven ways of taxing the rich would generate more than $6 trillion over 10 years -- enough to tackle the great needs of the nation. As inequality has exploded, our unjust tax system has allowed the richest Americans to hoard wealth, at the expense of the rest of us.
It’s not radical to rein in this irresponsibility. It’s radical to let it continue.

It's pretty bad information, though. The title says "What if we actually taxed the rich", then the content of the video says that we _do_ tax the rich, and he just wants to tax them _more._ The bits on tax loopholes, i.e. the _actual_ ways that rich people get out of paying taxes, i.e. tax loopholes, are there... but stuffed in near the end. It's useless to raise taxes without eliminating tax loopholes, and not really necessary to raise overall taxes if we _do_ eliminate the tax loopholes.

You can't tax people on the money they don't have. The billionaires he mentions have money vested in stocks, that cannot be taxed if it's liquid. That would set a dangerous precedent and damage the retail investor too. Reich is a dumbass who doesn't understand this simple concept. Plus he slams Trump who lowered taxes on americans making under 195k/year, and raised taxes on people making over that. He also doubled the standard deduction which lowers your tax liability (unless you itemize). I genuinely do not understand the morons that follow this cancerous tumor named Reich.

The Republic Party has always been the political party that drastically runs up the U.S. national debt even though they obviously fool enough people by calling themselves fiscal conservatives. The vast majority of the public need to wake up to this fact. It's been long overdue that the extremely wealthy pay their fair share of taxes but don't hold your breath because they have the money and influence. Mr. Reich, Senator Sanders & Warren are doing their best to make people aware of the rigged tax code & other major issues - I & many others are extremely grateful for their efforts.

The thing that's still amazes me is how many people in this country who aren't billionaires or multi-multimillionaires support this individual. Are they under the illusion that they're going to be a billionaire someday? If you aren't born, rich or have very rich connections, good luck on that. Why else would anybody vote for someone who lacks decency, dignity, honesty, accountability or intelligence? If the economy goes bad between now and late 24, we're going to be dealing with a fascist hell in a country that has always considered itself the beacon of freedom and democracy in the world. We need to be relentless in pointing out just how dangerous and unprecedented this threat to all of us is. Anybody not in the maga cult is accountable to get to vote out. I liked how our company (in 1990s) execs required the employees to only sell their stocks at few short specific times to keep prices stable, while they themselves who had by the largest amount of stocks by far were exempt. Month before everything crashed, they held a company meeting showing the future was bright and shiny while they were selling off their stocks like hot potatoes. Then 1/2 year after company crashed, it was decided that the CEO who been hired a year and half earlier before crash (a multi-millionaire who had made a lot of money before crash by selling out and was instrumental in company going down through bad decisions) had bought a multi-million dollar home, was to get a million dollar bail out as crash of company had been "unexpected" and was unfair burden for him now that he was out of job. The rest of us who were there from start and built the company were really struggling and lost significant portion of income due to stocks being worthless (having been part of our salary as they didn't have enough cash) got bupkis. Rich watching out for the rich, an American tradition.

I would add the following suggestion: replace fhe corporate incime tax with a gross receipts tax. A tax of about 1.5% of gross receipts (sales, interest income, etc.) would be revenue neutral. If you want more reveneue, raise the rate. Since there are basically no deductions from gross reciepts (bad debt and credits to the customer would be the only exceptions), things like Amazon not paying taxes can't happen. This would eliminate the distinction between Subchapter S and Subchapter C corporations. Distributions to owners in S-corporarions would now be taxable jaut like when a C-corp pays dividends ro its shareholders.

It’s easier to just pick on the rich then to do actual hard work and control government spending and this is how the Dems get their votes by promising these things to you Folks…you cant cure poverty by raising taxes on the rich. To cure poverty you have to stop giving free money to people and have them go to work. When you give money to people that don’t know how to properly spend or save it, they just loose it.

@@tomf9292 Absolute total nonsense. It is not just the rich but also corporate america that are significantly underpaying taxes. In 2018 the IRS total federal income taxes collected show that corporate america only paid 6% of total taxes collected whereas individuals paid 94% of total federal income taxes collected. Taxes are the price we pay for government goods and services ... military, judicial system, roads, bridges, airports, educated employees and many more. It is patently absurd to claim that corporate america only uses 6% of federal government goods and services ... nobody believes that. Thus corporate america is the real welfare queen and corporate socialism is the reality of the US tax system. With regard to taxing the "rich" individuals, they are not much different than corporate america. they get all sorts of tax advantages that are not applicable to average americans. It has been reported that the Walton family (Walmart) controls as much wealth and income as the bottom 50+ million american citizens. One doubts that the Walton's pay anywhere as much income tax as even the bottom 50 million american citizens pay. There is a reason why US wealth inequality has grown significantly since about 1980 ... and it has everything to do with the dysfunctional US income tax system and how corporate america and the very wealthy get all sorts of tax advantages from it. With regard to federal government spending .... something like 75+% of all federal government spending is incurred on only 4 items ... social security, medicare, military, and interest on national debt. And social security and medicare are largely user fee funded via payroll deductions. One potential alternative is to eliminate the income cap on social security and medicare and have it apply to all income with no limits. The very rich benefit significantly from the relatively low cap levels on this.

Yes, these would be a great start. But the real solution is a complete overhaul of the absurd and completely dysfunctional federal income tax system. First broaden the tax base to treat all sources of income the same. Makes no difference if you income is salary , wages, interest, capital gains, dividends, food stamps, retirement income, business profits, or whatever. Second, level the playing field and have only one tax category ... namely corporate income tax. All entities should be taxed under the same rules, which is revenue minus expense equals profit or taxable income. Corporations, partnerships, individuals (corporations of one), charities, non profits, or whatever the entity should all be taxed under the same rules. Those two changes alone would make income tax simpler, fairer, logical, and enable generating the tax revenues needed to provide government goods and services. Nickel and dime changes to the tax system will not resolve the mess that is the current federal income tax system. Hard to argue that all income is not the same, and hard to argue that everyone should not have the same tax rules.

Yes, it's crazy and egregious, but eliminating it doesn't raise that much money. Still a better idea to get rid of it, though, than a 2% "wealth tax". In Bezos' case, that essentially means taking away 2% of his ownership stake in his own company a year. Declaring war on 5 very successful people (Bezos, Gates, Buffett, Musk etc - funny nobody mentions the Waltons or the Kochs) makes people feel cool and radical but down deep it's selfish and greedy. Better to just eliminate the long term capital gains rate and the dividend rate, and put them both back under the earned income rate the way it was in the 90s. But that's not cool, because the champagne anarchists will have to pay more tax.

@Nancy Desch Actually trickle down does exist. Unfortunately, the trickle itself is the result of the ultra wealthy urinating down upon the average American. In truth, one doesn’t need a Nobel prize in economics to understand that the ONLY WAY to maintain consistent economic growth, is by ensuring that the purchase power of the vast majority of working class citizens, is both reasonable, sufficient, and incremental. These combined factors create a steady demand for goods and services. This in turn creates the necessity for continuing production and labor demands, which then reinforces an enduring cycle of economic growth, with the added benefits of increased employment opportunity and greater job security. The concept is in no way complex. In fact it’s rather simple and obvious given just a modicum of consideration. Cheers!

Here's a tax code for you to have people analyze Robert. People pay 0% on income up to $30,000, then 1% on the next $30k, 2% on the $30k after that up to 90% on earnings above 2.7 million. No differential tax rates based on different kinds of income, no deductions, just a strait progressive tax rate that places most of the burden on the people at the top doing the exploiting, to discourage wealth hoarding. And before anyone asks, yes, I have thought about married couples and businesses, they would modify the point at which the tax intervals begin. An extra 30k would be added for a spouse, and 15k for each dependent up to 4. Businesses would have their starting rate determined by how many employees they have with progressively larger intervals between when their starting rate goes up. A quick rundown: Businesses would pay 0% of 30k per FULL TIME employee up to ten employees, then 150K per 5 employees up to 50 employees, then 300K per 10 employees up to 100, then 750k per 25 employees up to 500, and so on. This kind of system would incentivize businesses to hire more people than the bare minimum to get into a higher tax block. I work for a company with just under 50 employees, and one of the biggest problems that we face is that if one person calls off on a particular shift, it creates a cascade of problems for everyone else in that department, because there aren't enough people working to cover that person's absence. If my company could be incentivized to hire 12 or so more people, everything would run much more smoothly and not fall apart at the slightest problem.

What is a fair share? No one has been able to define it. I used to believe all that about millionares and billionares not paying taxes. I took an interest as to how they don't pay. It started with looking at the various IRS tax forms. It was easy to understand. Business expenses are tax write-offs. Profits made are given to share holders as dividends, which is taxed. But at a lower rate. Dividends from REITs are taxed as income or maybe declared as ROC. Return On Capital, which is not taxed. I also learned that taxes paid to foreign countries from investments are tax credits. There is no double taxation. I made $400 in dividends from one REIT company. That dividend was declared an ROC. I will not be paying taxes on that. What I've learned is that my wealthly people don't take away from me on building my wealth. Fun Fact: Amazon does not own the buildings they operate out of. They lease the building and the land. Paying a lease is a business expense. A tax write off. I'm middleclass and side with the millionares and billionares.

Good ideas in principle, but there's always more loopholes to be found. The tax code needs to be simplified so that loopholes are few and far between, if at all. I also wish people could define what they mean by "fair share", it seems to be a rallying cry for most people, but that's about it.

The way I see it it this: The average salary in the US is about $48,000 a year. Jeff Bezos made over $74 billion last year. That’s 1,541,000+ times the average salary. But Jeff Bezos definitely does not do that many times the amount of work the average worker works. Probably even less than the average worker. Much less than someone working 3 jobs.

I think the tax code should begin with an income tax free earnings amount. I live in St. Louis mo, based on our economy in our metro area I would set that amount at $50,000, regardless of total income. So if you earned $49,999 or less you wouldn’t pay any income. If you earned &50,001 or more you would pay tax on every dollar in earnings above $50,000, so earnings of $99,999 pays taxes on $49.999, and so on. And anytime congress cuts taxes they raise from the bottom up, ie $50,000 would go to $60k etc. That would drive the economy much better the giving tax cuts at the top!

What is always missing from these discussions is how the wealthy are disproportionately receiving benefits. Generally major federal projects meant to help “workers” tend to help wealthy people more by increasing revenue and profits to those businesses disproportionately, increasing velocity of money also helping the wealthy. Even programs like SNAP help the wealthy by keeping crime down. Somebody please address this concept publicly. **** Professor Reich, politicians, economists please address this issue.
