Modal Interchange starts to dive head first into the theory rabbit hole for sure. But in this episode, I'll cover the basics of what it is, where you'll see it and how you can start to use it in your playing!

to clarify to those who didn't notice: parallel keys share same tonic - C & Cm, relative keys share all notes in the scale like C & Am.

That's a fantastic class! Some great explanations and examples in there. I kind of get like 40% of its content (like, understand it in a way so that I could apply it), but that 40% is 30% more than I understood the first time I was taught about modal interchange by a teacher. So as an advice to everybody who might feel overwhelmed. Just keep going, it seems to be like learning to speak. At first, you barely can speak any words, and somewhen we're able to write whole books. Somewhen... :D

so many comments about it being too fast. you need to keep in mind what he mentioned several times at the start. "it's a rabbit hole". when he says taking from the parallel minor scales is because those are most common and easy to grasp. ofc you can take from other modes. this kind of thing needs to stew in your head for a while and practical examples like in this video are very useful and important. the concept itself is easy. but the key is selection and placement. is like saying "i know the chromatic scale, now i can play everything". you NEED these examples and it'S great the video is jam packed with them. sometimes it's good to review some of the stuff a video requires you to know in advance instead of complaining about what specific level of knowledgte the video is aimed at. this is one of the best and to the point channels i've found. practical examples are gold when it comes to this stuff. the concept itself, again, can be read up on anywhere. that doesn't get you into playing actual music with it though

Hi Richard, Bijan Taghavi responding here - I can't speak for Brenden, but personally how I approached learning modal interchange was 1) yes, learning and familiarizing myself with modal interchange in all 12 keys. Taking different modal interchange progressions, for ex: 4maj - 4min - 1maj, and taking it through all keys. 2) Through Composition. Try composing a tune where the chord progression uses modal interchange. 3) Finding/Analyzing it in other tunes (for ex: Lady Bird). Hope this helps!

Now if you write out all the Parallel Modes are there any rules to which chord you can change in a particular chord progression?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard - I’m not sure I’m understanding your question totally, but interchanging any chords between parallel modes is an option you can utilize. It’s up to you and your preferences on which chords you like to interchange!

@@jazzpianoschool Sorry if it was not really clear... But if you have all the Parallel modes from one key for instance (C ionian, C Dorian, C Phrygian, C Lydian, C Mixolydian, C Aeolian and C Locrian)... You can pick out chords from every mode... So lets say i have a simple chord progression like a ii-V- I. If i want to make it sound more interesting i could pick just something from all the other modes and also play that mode over it ? What i mean with " are there any rules" is more like what works or what not. In a ii-V-I you have a sub dom. to a dom. to a tonic chord function but if i pick other chords from a parallel mode are these chords function the same as in Major diatonic harmony?

@@rik-keymusic160 Will try to answer your question. Yes,you can take from any mode. And even from non diatonic mode,like C double harmonic major... There is no rule how to use it,but there is an advise- use the power of voice leading.

10:30 My God, this is piano yoga! :q What a stretch... :o BTW what is the difference between the green keys and red keys on your keyboard? And what software is it?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment @Bon Bon! There is no difference between the green and the red, the software just changes color from red to green from the C one octave above middle C. Hope this clarifies it!

isn't it borrowing a chord from any of the modes that have the same tonic note i.e. C lydian or C phrygian etc not just the natural minor scale ?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 6 жыл бұрын
Hi @kha sab: technically, yes you can stretch modal interchange to interchange modes outside of just the natural minor scale (Aeolian). But more often than not, modal interchange simply refers to interchanging your major and minor harmony and the corresponding modes & chords within those 2 harmonic pallets. Hope this helps!

natural minor harmony is still diatonic. Also Can I ask what you mean at 7:15 when you say " the two is a 1min7" and then you play the root chord (Cmin7) ?? Then you say the 3 is an A Maj7 and you play EbMaj7 ???
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 6 жыл бұрын
Hi @kha sab: thanks for the question! I think there is a slight misunderstanding there - when Brenden plays the Ebmaj7, he meant "the 3 is a Major 7" not "the 3 is an A maj7". Hope this clarifies things!

So you say it’s the f minor 7 chord.....but why do you play the note G in the chord as well....as this is not in f m 7 chord.......same with cm7 chord you play the D note.....this needs to be explained sir....
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. If you’re at the stage in your development where you are learning about modal interchange you should already know your rootless voicings and be familiar with the slang reference of Fm7 to Fm9 and Cm7 to Cm9. If this is hazy for you, then I’d suggest to brush up on those skills and theory first before coming to this lesson. Hope this helps!

by "two five" you mean secondary dominant? C C# G wouldn't be the secondary dominant of Cmaj...
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mardvk, thanks for the question. A secondary dominant would turn allow the V of any V-I motion (even if not the diatonic 5-1) to become a dominant chord. If you’re referring to G7 & C#7 those would be tritone substitutions of one another. Hope this is helpful!

Excellent content, overall, and you're clearly a really good, knowledgeable player who we can all learn from. But, from a tutorial perspective, you really need to slow down. You sound like you've been on a major caffeine binge....or something! What you've got to say is important, so why be so 'throwaway' with it? Undermines everything you're trying to do: teach.
