In this video i talk about 4A (4x4 auto) on my F150. I show how the power is distributed to the wheels.
In my videos I compare the 3.5 EcoBoost to the 2.7 liter EcoBoost. both engines have their advantages and are great in different ways. comment below! thanks for watching!

Real talk, i signed in just to like/sub after this video (and I never do that). I noticed the same thing in my 2021 f150 lariat where the power engages/disengages depending on turns and acceleration. I had always heard that the 4wd was always active in 4A but noticed differences in distribution. Great video

This video was super helpful. My F-150 lease is up in a few months and I've been thinking about moving up to a Lariat from an XLT just for the 4 auto. I thought it was mostly an AWD system - but this video showed me exactly how it isn't that. Thanks!

The 4 mode transfer case doesn't actually cut power. The viscous coupler ( which is essentially a clutch pack) simply allows the correct amount of slippage when you are turning on a hard surface.

I liked driving during snow storms in the company Expeditions w/ A4WD. When you hit the ruts of snow and ice it was smooth and more controlled. When I drove the Expeditions that didn't have A4WD when you hit deeper snow it would pull to the left and right. My Explorer has 4WD but there are no shifting controls. I handles the deep snow very well. It must have little elves in the (PTU) that keep you traveling along.

My 2010 F-150 Harley Davidson Edition has three modes: 2H, AWD and 4H. 2010, not a typo. I leave it AWD most of time. I think the difference between AWD and 4H is AWD uses the multi-plate clutch connecting the front diff and rear diff, whereas 4H locks front and rear together.

In 4WD AUTO (4A), the TCCM continuously monitors conditions and driver input to send torque automatically to the front driveline by controlling the transfer case clutch, providing 4WD capability. The TCCM sends a duty cycle command to the transfer case clutch coil as a torque request based on combination of preemptive and wheel slip response algorithm. Preemptive response is based on steering wheel angle, vehicle speed, throttle positions and available powertrain torque. Wheel slip response is based on monitoring the average front and rear wheel speeds. When 4WD is no longer needed (during cruising or steady state driving) system defaults back to RWD mode by setting the duty cycle output to 0. The IWEs remain engaged to allow seamless torque transfer to the front driveline when necessary. TCCM increases the duty cycle to prevent or control slip under any of the following conditions: Slip is detected. Heavy acceleration (throttle position). Straight-ahead steering wheel angle.

Great Video. Do the front hubs lock immediately when you switch to 4WD Auto and stay locked until you switch it off? I noticed that I get some shudder from the front end when I'm in Auto and am maneuvering at low speeds when the wheel is turned almost all the way in one direction like when turning into a parking spot. This does not happen in 2WD. I lifted the front of the car in Auto and you can't turn the wheel. In 2WD, it turns freely. I know that there is only power to the front wheels after the rear wheels slip like it's supposed to. It's definitely not in 4WD all the time on auto. I have a 2015 Navigator. No 4WD low, no locking rear and no sport mode. Just the basic Control Trac system.

@@seadoomania what I’m describing is normal. The front hubs are locked in A4WD. It a tight turn on dry pavement the tires will skip a little because they aren’t all turning the same speed. What you described is not normal. Make sure your tires are worn evenly and all inflated to the same pressure. The shudder happens when they are not all turning the same speed so anything that causes even slight difference in size will cause it like mixing new and old tires.

Okay................ so just to be clear Lol. In 4A, you're saying that 4wd will cut out after a few minutes of hwy driving where no slipping is detected? So I can leave it in 4A while hwy driving and it will handle periodic ice/snow conditions at hwy speed? I live in Ontario, so this is essential, not a gimmick to have fun with.

If you're curious of when for a cuts power to the front axle turn on your power distribution screen. It will show you when the front axle is engaged. None of the drive modes will save you from a sheet of ice. But four-wheel drive high is a little bit better than four-wheel drive auto.

I've seen his vid. The system actually uses steering input to determine when to just power. It will also cut power at constant high way speed to save fuel, as soon as the vehicle is accelerated again 4x4 is re-engaged. When turning the system uses steering input to determine its time to cut power, then if slippage is detected it will engage 4x4. It's very noticeable.. you can also look at the power distribution screen it the truck.

The Raptor transfer case is different than the one that is in every other 4A trim. the non-raptor tcase relies on clutches in 4hi, whereas the raptor tcase will lock into 4hi. it's also beefier when you put them side by side on the shop floor.
