Well presented the history and reasons. I have been talking about this since first DSLR came out but never people really get it unless you present them all negatives (and you really can't do that by always carrying them with you etc). Just one addition to the reason why APS-C became before 35mm sensor wasn't just the price, as back then there were digital scanning backs etc. The main problem was that there werent technology available to do such fast sensors at such size. A larger medium format scanner back that took 1-5min scanning was just unacceptable for many and prices were crazy. Then 35mm sensor size became possible and rest is history, that so many forgets. And it is great to see someone made a video to explain it with the film negatives etc. And doing so without attitude about 35mm being superior or something. Maybe the reason is that You don't just pixel peep but you do real photographs so you know when something works for the need. Btw, really like your studio/home interior style, so nice to see someone spending time to other things than collecting camera gear as decoration for KZfaq to get the look....
@nickcarverphoto

Thank you very much for the compliments and comments! And you're right about the scanner backs. It's a shame they were/are so impractical for many types of photography.

Hi, great clip, I didn't know that APS-C was also a Film Format, I also like how you showed the other Film Formats, etc. I'm a Film Student doing a Master of Moving Image at The University of Sydney, Australia. I'm primarily a Videographer but as I use the university's cameras which are mostly DSLR's, understanding which to use is important for my Framing, as I shoot on locations where do you don't have a lot of space to stand back. Kind regards.

Seems to me though that manufacturers may find they run into a physical limitation, with smaller sensors in an SLR type camera. That is, smaller frames require shorter focal length lenses, and in the super wide angle world that means super small physical distance (focal length) between lens and plane. This may cause an interference problem for a mirror flipping up. So it seems to me the super wide angle lenses on a small format would really need to be mirrorless. I'm wondering if this was the original motivation for the mirrorless designs..?
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 7 жыл бұрын
Dave B hmm, that's a very interesting point. Yeah there must be some breaking point where the sensor is so small that you just can't get the focal length any shorter.

I used 35mm film at Science Camp. I was 12 years old then. I was always excited when I got my pictures back to see which ones were any good. Many were over exposed or too dark to see anything. The flash ruined every picture. There was just no knowing what the photo looked liked until after they were developed. And I must mention the cost to have a completely white picture developed. I supposed I could say I have some good white balance cards in my photo album. Thanks $5 35mm camera!

The Niteshifter haha - yeah that's one way to get a white card! Isn't the anticipation of seeing how the film turned out so exciting? I love the delayed gratification of it.

Hi Nick, Like your name,,,,,,,,, are you saying a 24 mp full frame sensor, is just as good as 24 mp crop sensor? The only difference being size or zoom of the image? This was a fantastic presentation, the opening graphics, the images, the light table and all props were engaging. Thanks.
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 8 жыл бұрын
+Rick Mentore In terms of physical pixel dimensions, they will be the same. And at low ISO numbers, the printability and quality should be the same. But by cramming 24 megapixels into a smaller sensor, the high ISO noise will start to rear its ugly head more than on the full frame 24 mp.

Why does it seem like the Cannon Mark 3 puts out better quality video than my Cannon 70D? It honestly looks more cinematic. What am I doing wrong?
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 8 жыл бұрын
You're probably not doing anything wrong at all. Full frame sensors result in images with a shallower depth of field than crop sensors. That shallow depth of field is one factor in getting that cinematic look. Also, I'd make sure both are set to shoot at 24 frames per second instead of 30 frames per second. 24fps looks much more cinematic over 30fps.
