Lots of debate and accusations were cast after Russell and Bottas crashed in Imola. But who was to blame? And when do the stewards decide to take no action? What do the rules tell us here?

I disagree. It does not show Bottas crossing the line. In this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5yTpryfqLuoiIE.html around 2:10 you can see Bottas crossing the line before Russell jinks out the way. In this video they then have a long discussion on how he left a car width but do so while having the video pause before they line is crossed.

@@chriscollins550 Sure it matters... the incident happened when the track was still drying. Bottas pushed Russel out to the edge of the track where it was still damp. By the rules Bottas was fine... if he wanted to remain in the race, he shouldn't have pushed another driver over that far and risk an incident. I also find it interesting when people bring up Hamilton passing Norris... as if Norris didn't leave more room (on a dry track no less), and Hamilton overtook after both cars had straightened out after the kink.
@RaymondBarbour
@RaymondBarbour 3 жыл бұрын
@@chriscollins550 I saw this as a racing incident. Looking at it in slow motion I never saw Bottas stop at a car width. I think that Russell was expecting given the conditions and that of his car touched the curb or grass it would be the end for both of them that Bottas would be cautious and I think he was expecting him not to cross the line. When the car crossed the line in that split second he did not know if Bottas was going to continue to drift across.

He pushed Russel out onto the damp part of the track, if the track was already dry that would have been fine for him to leave the space he did. Certainly not a dirty move, neither was a it a good decision. What did Russel do wrong? He was coming up behind Bottas with a lot of speed Bottas was more aggressive than he was expecting, he moved right to avoid Bottas, got onto the damp part of the track and lost the rear of the car. What should Russel have done there? Decided against overtaking, even though he was going so much faster, just because Bottas might make the mistake of pushing him too wide?
@s777nserg

Bottas loses his car a little bit after pushing Russell to outside. Russell sees sudden movement into his car and reacts but goes too wide. So I can see how people can blame Bottas but personally I think you need like one driver more to interpret it that way.

An illustration of Singapore 2017 was used for the thumb nail. This for me was an example of a more debatable example of a racing incident. Yes, it could be argued that drivers do that sort of thing at the start of the race, but given the context of it, much to the frustration and disappointment of those who were looking forward to a close battle for the championship between Hamilton and Vettel, even if Vettel had been more cautious and less aggressive than he had been, with Hamilton only starting fifth, Vettel was more than likely going to regain the championship lead from Hamilton even if he had finished third behind Verstappen and Raikkonen. By acting the way he did, pinching Raikkonen and Verstappen together to the point where all three of them touched and ultimately retired from the race, Vettel allowed Hamilton to get one hand on the title, which he wouldn't relinquish

As a little comment on 6:32 you should not ignore 27.2 of the F1 sporting regulations, which states that drivers have to obey the sporting code at all times (or more precise Appendix L, Chapter IV of the Code). A lot of the stuff that was written in the sporting regulations until 2017 is now in the FIA Sporting Code, so it is still valid but you have to look somewhere else. Great video anyway!
@BuiltnotBought69
@BuiltnotBought69 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your assessment of the situation although I feel there were 2 major talking points I would have enjoyed if you expanded on. One being the track conditions, as I feel these played a tremendous role in how Bottas approached the kink and the reason Russell couldn't make the move stick in the first place. Bottas was on fresher rubber than Russell and there was only 1 dry line at the time of this incident. Most drivers had only been on slicks and mediums at that for no more than 3-4 laps. If Bottas stayed anymore to the left he would have spun himself out in my opinion. The second thing I was hoping you'd spend a bit more time discussing is Russell's reaction to the incident. I think this is what most people are upset at Russell for and it's not because we aren't fans, its because we've seen the consequences of these kind of careless accidents and Russell's initial reactions were pretty nasty, even the commentators thought Russell was going over to check if his fellow driver was okay but nope lol gave him a bonk instead. While I can understand adrenaline, Russell proceeded to double down afterwards in the interview. I believe this could have been and may still be a huge learning moment for Russell. Also the last thing that I find ironic but I haven't seen mentioned in videos about this is the fact that Hamilton went off track a lap or 2 before trying to pass Russell on the wet line. Yea a Mercedes has no business being passed by a Williams that's true but if you know any driver on the grid that will happily give up a position, slow down and pull over for another driver then they won't be there long.

I agree with your point, it's a racing incident, but I think you did everyone a disservice by not comparing the other passes into T1 that race. Bottas absolutely left less space than Lando did. for me a racing incident describes an incident that pretty much every racing driver could be caught in. Like a crash like russel and bottas. Russell did what any of that entire f1 grid would do in that situation. He went for the move. Bottas defended. Incidents like Ferrari at austria last year was entirely leclercs fault because most of the drivers wouldn't have gone where he did.

The blame for this crash should be on what created the huge difference in speed between the 2 cars. Why was Russell closing on a Merc with so much more speed? DRS. The race director allowed DRS to be used with only 1 dry line on the track. An incident like this was bound to happen.

Bottas movement is notoriously more aggressive and abrupt than the one Norris did, Norris is a bit more to the inside while being further ahead on the track, well past the kink. Bottas wanted the everything, he was hugging the inside and moved accross after Russell points his car to the outside, that's closer to blocking than picking your line. In 2014 Canada (i think) Perez was punished for moving into Massa's line on the kink before turn 1, even though Massa had plenty of space to his left.

It seems to me that occasional puzzling decisions by racing stewards have less to do with the intentional grey areas of the regulations and more to do with the fact that in many cases, whether a collision did occur and how big it was seemed to play a key role. Needless to say, the resulting collision and its seriousness does not always correlate with the legality or not of the move that causes an incident. So I've seen this play both ways: On one hand, somebody makes a mistake that lies in the sphere of reasonable driver errors, but if it unintentionally causes a collision, it may be penalized instead of being classified as a racing incident because it caused another driver to lose positions. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a dangerous move that is clearly prohibited is not penalized, just because the other driver involved managed to take some form of evasive action that prevented a collision, even if it meant losing track position or failing to overtake. It's this that I find more inconsistent and questionable rather than the inherent vagueness of some rules that allows different interpretations in somewhat similar incidents. To make a terrible analogy since that's my thing, it's as if somebody gets jail time after accidentally stepping on a gun that was lying on the ground, causing the gun to fire and kill somebody, as the court argued that the gun was quite visible and the accused could avoid stepping on it if they were more careful, while another person takes aim and shoots somebody but goes unpunished because the other person ducked and wasn't hit.

Russell’s error is less concerning than everyone’s reaction afterwards, a bit more so Russell than Bottas, but both should have been a bit classier in how they handled themselves. Good video! Slightly off topic: does anyone here know where one may be able to find statistics on how often the safety car is getting deployed on lap 1? It might just be me, but it does happen quite often these days, right? Just had the thought last time if rolling starts would be something to consider - or do drivers need to be more careful... Not a simple question obviously.

For the incident, its indeed a racing incident. I can see Bottas defending as hard but not over the limit as something anyone would do... and having seen the cockpit cam of Russel... the difference in speed and a little wobble can indeed give you a bit of a scare. I also had a first reaction that Bottas would move further... but they should be able to trust each other. They are F1 drivers after all.

The rules are overly vague and Stewards are far to human to use this freedom without bias. If Russel misjudges his grip and crashes at potentially deadly speed into Bottas' car, ending both drivers' races, then it's a racing incident without penalty points. But if Vettel misjudges his grip and locks up, touches Ocon at far lower speed and soft enough so both can continue their race, then 2 penalty points are to be awarded to Vettel. Seems perfectly fair (if you're a Russel fan and don't like Vettel). And Russel was talking at least as much rubbish in the interview as Vettel did in the heat of the moment over the radio. Which shouldn't explain the difference in penalizing anyway, but it would at least look a little less biased if only Vettel would have said baseless nonsense and Russel would have kept a cool head in the aftermath.

The problem is, Bottas’ car placement made Russell’s turn in very very late, in fact you can still see from his on board that Russell’s car is still not pointing perfectly straight down the track and is slightly pointing to the right (compensated for tilted camera angle). He is still turning when he touched that wet patch.

It is understandable though, that crash was really fast and even though its fairly safe at those speeds when youre in the car ( especially the one thats in the air ) all you can think is “THIS GUY IS TRYING TO KILL ME” so it’s understandable why he attacked the way he did. But he shouldve have. He shouldve worried about bottas’s safety

One aspect I think about is that if Russel had to turn slightly right to avoid Bottas he couldn't have just turned in to the outside line once Bottas stopped drifting out. He would had to do a strong turn within the span of tenths of a second which would have caused a spin anyway on that wet track. I'm not a racing driver so I dont know but is it not worth considering?

what really pisses me off abuout the whole Bottas vs Russell debacle isn't too much who was at fault (even if I totally blame Russel), but the absolute lack of sportsmanship between both of them. Russell in particular went straight to Bottas without even considering that he just had a way bigger crash than him just to blame him! He didn't even considered for one minute that A) Bottas might have been seriously injured and B) maybe he was the one that caused the crash. I used to like George, but after this event he's slightly above Mazepin in my book... slightly.

We should also look at the fact they had a huge speed difference and Russell pull out at turn in last second. That means he already to commit to his line. Although Boatts only moved slightly it’s enough to throw off Russell’s line.

I'm surprised you didn't mentioned that Bottas moved from Right to Left to give Russell some space, to me seems that Russell panicked plus the wet track conditions didn't help, hew was on the wet side of the track.
@blackAngel88it

I think calling this a racing incident is okay, but if I had to blame one of the drivers, then I'd say Russel was coming in much faster, was already next to Bottas and Bottas should've given him enough space. Russel also didn't just hit the wet curb, but - although camera angles were kinda poor - I'm fairly certain he was on the grass... Besides that, what's Bottas still doing at Mercedes? He's that much slower on one of (if not THE fastest car on the track) than Williams, one of the slowest cars. Gotta love Toto Wolffs' comment: >"George should have never launched into this manoeuvre," said Wolff after the race. But, as he also noted, "Valtteri had a bad first 30 laps and shouldn’t have been there." really says more about Bottas than it does about Russel...

well there is another very important difference between the russell-bottas incident and hamiltons move against lando. if you compare the ways they defended, lando positioned his car more in the direction of T2 while bottas' car was pointed to the outside of the track , if they both would have continued on these lines hamilton would have enough room while bottas would pinch russell onto the gras.

I think Driver61 put it perfectly, If the track was dry Russel overtakes Botas, Because its not a straight Botas is allowed to move. Its just seems like a bit of inexperience from Russel, and Botas was like alright go for it knowing he would fail but not expecting a crash.

What I miss is the experience of the drivers. A Lewis Hamilton is not a George Russell. Someone with less overall experience might do more errors. When you didn't where in a situation before, you might panic a bit. A more experienced driver wouldn't had an issue at all in that situation. For me I would say for George this was an accident due to missing experience. Now to Bottas. Defending his position is his right and the driving itself was okay. Now comes the question if it would be better do do stuff different in that situation. He should be aware that Russell was coming and he has less experience. He might have noticed the huge speed difference. I would say it would be better to not fight about that position and give him more room. I mean it's still a Williams against an Mercedes. In my opinion the call that this was a race incident, was correct but Bottas could have acted a bit different. The call from Toto that George should have not tried to attack is not correct in my opinion and that he doesn't need to proof anything is also not correct, except they know more than we know (Russell has a Mercedes seat for 2022). Russell is in a Williams and it would take them quite a while until they have a chance to win the championship. The goal of every driver should be to win the championship. He proofed in one race, with the right car and team, he has great potential to win the championship. He needs to proof everyone that he deserves a seat in their team. When Mercedes doesn't have a open seat for 2022, he needs to try to get a seat with a other team, that can help him to win the championship. At least both drivers should have learned something.
Did Mercedes and Hamilton screw up in Turkey?
