For more information or to order this lens (Affiliated link): www.venuslens.net/product/15mm-f-4-5-zero-d-shift/ref/11/ Have you used a shift or tilt-shift lens before? What is your favourite? And is there a camera mount you want Laowa to natively support for this 15mm f/4.5 shift lens?

I have a lot of T&S lenses, the Nikkor 24/3.5, and the very first pre-ai 35 mm. Then I have a Canon 24/3.5 and Olympus Zuiko 35/2.8. By the way, I also have a 4x5 Large Format. All of them are my favorites.

I use the Nikon 19mm f/4 PC-E, which is regarded as the sharpest wide-angle shift lens available, although I wonder if this new Laowa beats it. I don't suppose you are familiar with the Nikon 19mm to offer a comparison Richard?

From 13:52 you discuss the sharpness when unshifted. But how about the sharpness, its uniformity , corner sharpness when the lens is at maximum shift vertically, horizontally and diagonally? That would be very interesting to know.

Hello Richard, thank you for your great Review! Really useful! I have a question: as other photographers said in the past comments, I would like to get a lens next to 24 mm. I have a Nikon D800. If I attach the Laowa 15 mm with an adapter I could extend the focal length by a factor and get a lens focal > 15mm. Is it right? If I m right, do you know if there is an "adapter Nikon to Nikon" on the markt for that goal? I would buy a Laowa 15mm with F Mount and with such an adapter I could get a Lens next to 24mm. Hope to hear from you, Luca
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Luca, to answer your questions: 1. Yes with the shift feature, the total angle of view (from multi shots captured at different shift position) would be wider than 15mm. IIRD it is around 10mm with maximum shift 2. You don't need an adaptor because there is a F-mount version available for this lens so that's perfect for your D800. And if you would like to order one, it would be great if you can order using my affiliated link and support me :) www.venuslens.net/product/15mm-f-4-5-zero-d-shift/ref/11/ (It doesn't cost you any extra)

Manual focus only of course. I have a 45mm Nikon tilt/shift and just use it as a standard lens, but use the tilt/shift whenever I need it. All hand-held, but at f/2.8 it’s fast enough. This one here seems pretty slow tbh but nice shots regardless!

@@TheRealRichardWong I’m very happy with it! I might one day consider the Laowa 15mm shift, as the Nikon 19mm tilt/shift mentioned by @Bayonet elsewhere on this thread is super, but of course the cost is pretty prohibitive (the lens cap replacement cost alone if $70+). As an aside, I wish there was an F-mount adapter to turn any lens into a three-position shift... I have seen this for Z-mount (I think), but I would use it to shift down my shift lens across (if that makes sense) and so I could stitch together nine FX shots (each at 24M). :D

Great Review, thanks, clear and to the point (and sooo good you allowed us to skip the what is a shift lens bit :). This is a super exciting lens and one I have been waiting (hoping for) for some time (I use both Nikon Z and Fuji X and there were few affordable good quality options for Nikon and only shift adapter options for Fuji). I would like an M mount so that I could adapt to both Z and FX or potentially GFX (or any other mount in the future), but I doubt they will produce that. It would be great though. Obviously, a GFX mount would be popular I would think good idea. What might be really interesting is if they produced a modified APSC version, as they do with some of their other ultra-wides.

@@TheRealRichardWong Yup, it certainly would, and even the Fuji X - with the right adaptors. And so that is surely the version I will order. The only problem is that one ends up swimming in adaptors. But it's more than worth it for a wide, sharp, well-priced shift lens tho! :) :)

@@TheRealRichardWong, I bought the lens and the 100mm filter holder with your link;) The good news is that both the lens and the filter holder are very well built and solid. The filter holder is constructed with metal. I have tested the lens with a 13-stop ND filter. The light leak of the shift mechanism is quite bad. I don't have another shift lens to compare so it may be normal for all shift lens. I can overcome this by wrapping the lens with a black color fabric. Surprisingly, there is light leak with the filter holder also. I have been using the normal H&Y 100mm magnetic filter holder with other lenses and I never had such problem even I stack 2 to 3 100mm filters. I have to wrap the filter holder with black fabric also. Now, I wonder whether shooting with the Laowa 9mm f5.6 RL lens and then correct the perspective and crop from the image is a better choice for long exposure shots.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 3 жыл бұрын
Hi P Mok, thanks for sharing your experience. Re light leak, i have not done any test like that myself with any of the shift lens so can't really say if it's normal. But i guess a 13 stop ND filter is really a bit extreme so I'm not that surprised you would have some light leak. I remember back in the days even the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8G had some light leak under similar kind of test. With the 9mm f/5.6.. i guess the lens itself should not have any light leak but wonder if the filter holder may also have light leak when used with a 13 stop ND?

Richard, thank you for this very helpful video. I love architecture photography, and never understood this style of lens. But really, what is the major advantage of this over, say, correcting perspective in post? I assume the IQ is that much better? But it seems like a much slower process, with the need for a tripod - necessary for professional shooters especially. Also, I do think you should keep the lens - your pics with it are great 👍
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 3 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks for watching and suggestion :) The main benefits: Yes Better IQ! Also much easier to do multi-shot and merge. And if you are doing professional arch work, you would be using a tripod to get the exactly correct framing and filter..etc anyway even when shooting on a bright sunny day, so with a shift lens, the work flow a lot faster and easier as you can preview the end results through the viewfinder/LCD immediately without having to guess what the result would look like after you corrected (and usually need to crop a bit as well) in post

@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 3 жыл бұрын
I "believe" you are right that most people only use shift, especially for landscape/architectural type of photos. The tilt feature is for you to change the plane of focus and as a result to increase or decrease the DOF. Since 15mm lens already have plenty DOF and you can't always easily align the plane of focus to increase the DOF without making the rest of photo look unnatural, most tilt-shift lens users are more interested in the shift feature instead. When I had a tilt-shift lens, i mostly use the tilt feature to create some toy effect photo (by minimising the DOF) or create some "special effect" portrait when shooting weddings.

@@Gloomwithaview Well, this lens is considered a prime lens. But in regarding to your question... We like ATG's recommendations, Voigtlander Nokton 21mm f/1.4 (Nikon) so we can using on multi-brand cameras. Then software to correct & shift to our contents. You really don't need real shift lenses, just know how to use the computer software. We shoot multi images in landscape or portrait modes and let the computer software stitch together. It's the software that will cost more than $3,000.00.

Hey Richard, I see that Laowa sells a lens support for their shift lenses. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc-kZdx9t5zQfJ8.html Is there a difference between shifting the lens normally versus shifting the camera itself(as in their video)?

Shift the camera would give you the perfect shift , it would work like the camera has a bigger sensor. You can merge the photos perfectly, better than shifting the lens. I explained that a bit in my new Laowa 20mm shift lens review as well :)
