I just purchased a Woodbridge sliding glass shower door that claims to have ULTRALUX GLASS COATING. Do I need any other protection such as RainX to prevent water stains and soap scum build up ?

I literally don’t understand why people are being so rude in these comments, I appreciated this info; he’s just saying he recommends glass Protectants rather than glass cleaners and showing why. Might have been nice to get some recommendations but it’s not the point he’s making and it’s kinda nice to watch someone not try to push marketing on to you. Thanks for the video!

I've been using a squeegee for a few months now.I do the walls,glass and floor after every shower. It has made a world of difference! The build up is very minimal and simple to clean. Just got some Rain-X and going to try it out to see if it helps any. Are there any specific glass protectants you recommend for long term use? I know you said Rain-X works fine but it wears off over time and needs to be reapplied so that's why I ask,thanks! Great video and information 👍

How should you clean a shower door to preserve the coating? Many people are using vinegar and dish soap mix to clean their shower doors. Will that eat away the coating?

that glass is NOT RUINED! i clean tile, grout, and glass everyday for my business. use a 3" felt glass polishing pad, hard water remover compound with a makita 9227 polisher of equivalent. wash the soap scum off first with soft scrub and a white 3m 44100 white polishing pad firs, wipe dry with microfiber towel to inspect for hard water deposits, then use method note. treat with any professional glass polish after the glass is clean and don't let your shower door get out of hand. shower pros in CA

ok so what should I buy/use to coat the shower glass door like you demonstrated? I have whole house water filter but the carbon build up on the shower glass door makes me to clean them up at least once/month.

jpthsd. The real best way is to put these coating on prior to use. To have any of these coatings work after use the doors have to be cleaned down to bare glass. Typically you would need to contact your local glass company to have it applied unless they will sell it to you.

I purchased a Kohler shower door with water resistant coating on it. I paid a good bit for the door. However, it is much worse after a shower then my Kohler shower doors that do not have the water resistant coating on them. The water sticks to the shower door. It seems to stay wet forever and then is left with cloudy spots. Even after one shower. If I don't take a shammy and completely dry the shower door after every single shower, it looks horrible.

Thank you David Blevins great question. Some companies like clearshield you can re apply some like DFI you can not. Knowing what you already have would be important.

+Tony J thank you for your thoughts. This video is just to educate people on what a surface protectant is not to give you a solution to already dirty glass. This is mainly designed for new glass installs before your glass is stained.

Proper maintenance of these coatings require you to squeegie your shower door every single time after you shower so that no water stays on it, who wants to be a window cleaner every day? Thats why we want these coatings but the coatings/sealers do not last a week if you leave the water on your glass.

Shane Draper yes you could use this on your windshield. It would last only about 3-6 months from my experience. (I put it on my car) the dirt and debris in the air while driving acts as an abrasive and removes it. But it does work.

Our shower door coating is a nightmare, it keeps the door dirty!! Can't even remove it with steel wool

Thank you Dave Simpson I think you have some other problem like maybe there never was a coating. Steel wool would potentially remove any coating so you probably do not have a coating at this point.

Masterbleu1 most of them need to be supplied by the manufacturer or installer some like Clearshild can be applied after the door is in what area are you located I can try to connect you with a distributor if your in the north east I can help

Always use a green shirt behind the test piece of glass - especially with a blue dye in the water. AND never give any examples of recommended shower door protectors!

I squeegee my shower after every use and I went a step further by cleaning and Rain-Xing the glass. I will say that it is a waste of time. It's probably good for people who don't squeegee after every shower but if you squeegee then using Rain-X is pointless. You'll still get the very minor build up over time which requires cleaning. But that build up is barely noticeable and comes off like butter with any normal cleaner. The absolute worst thing with shower glass doors is to be lazy and let them hard water deposits and soap scum build up. It's a nightmare trying to clean that off.

George-NY's Premier Contractor they all pretty much work the same just make sure it’s a product that lasts. There are a few like rain x that need to be applied weekly if used. Where others like Clearshild are more permanent

You discuss personally applying a surface coating- not one installed at the glass factory. Are you protecting trade secrets by not telling us what products you use?

Nope pretty sure I mention it in this video and the newest video definitely talks about it. If you haven’t checked it out. We use a product called Clearshield. We like this product because the company really stands behind the product and it can be re-applied in the field where the others can’t. If they ever had an issue you would need to order new glass. We have been using Clearshield for 15 years and only ever had an issue once and the company stood behind there product and took care of the issue for our customer.

Not enough diff between the two to justify the treatment. Just use Rain-X each time you clean.

Several comments noting can’t see much of a difference. I have a Diamond coating but if I don’t squeegee after every shower,, I have hard water drops showing - so two days is the same staining as one day without coating - big deal. So add to your video. Prove to us that over time that there is a difference. Your demo does not show anything

Answer: you can, you just have to re-apply it while "others" are applied once. This video was bad. No one should have to watch it. Saved you 5:27 if you're reading this

Thank you Teddy Roosevelt what are you not understanding? Surface protectants create a hydrophobic surface on the glass that stops the glass from spotting and etching with whatever is in the water soapscum minerals ect. Hopefully that helps.

+Daniel Paula thanks for your feedback. However this isn’t a product testing video. It is just to educate people about what a surface protectant does and what it’s for. You can’t purchase these products directly. This is something that comes on your shower door or other glass products when you order them. You can apply after but you would need to hire a company that has the ability to apply it.
