Logging is a way of life few people can enjoy. My dad and I logged together for 18 years although we had a skidder it was still the best time of my life. Oh to be 22 years old again and not worry about things we have to deal with now at the age of 58. Not dead yet although I am not a spring chicken, all well life experience cannot be duplicated. Live and learn.

Thanks for a great video, brings back a lot of good memories for me! At age 17, I started logging with a new from the factory Taylor sidearm loader mounted on a tandem Ford truck. I hauled 145 miles round trip (a long distance back in 1965) 2 loads per day. You could nearly set your watch by my pace due to the efficiency of the mules, loader and high quality of the 12-24ft logs I hauled daily. Usually took 13-18 minutes to load. I loved every minute of it.

Thanks for the very thorough explanation of the design,operation of the side loader. I grew up in Louisville, Mississippi. It is the home of Taylor Machine Works. They made a side loader called “The Loggers Dream”. It was very similar too yours, as you mentioned. They were very prevalent in use in our area. I know they were built through the 50’s and into the 60’/70’s. We occasionally see one in use now buy small loggers like you. With the advent of skidders/knuckle booms,etc. they fell into disuse by commercial loggers in our area. “Short Loggers” like you are a dying breed in our area. Taylor manufactured a cable skidder/loader labeled as a Loggers Dream as well. The Loggers Dream was a product that led too the production of a short pulpwood loader for wood yards and later fork lifts for handling logs at mills. Now Taylor is into forklifts in a big way, huge machines, shipping container handlers, etc. Their equipment is now in use worldwide. The side loader was a type of “pioneer” product that contributed to the growth the company.

So I understand the PTO is constantly turning the sprockets which engages the winch drums with friction from the brake drum. Is there a way to disengage the PTO, it seems like a lot of wear on the chain and sprockets when you go down the road. And thank you for your time showing this system.
@zachodom7486
@zachodom7486 Жыл бұрын
Yeah there is a part early on in the video that explains it. Pto control is on the console and you can engage or disengage it. When we’re in the woods loading, we just switch the truck off and on. Then we’re ready to move the truck or head to the mill, you can disengage the pto. You don’t want the pto turning when the truck is moving. If that makes sense. Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching!

I’ve ran both types of operations. Cable skidder crew and chainsaws, and now mules. Animals are wayyyyyy cheaper by far. Percentage wise at the end of the day, I am way ahead of a mechanical crew. If you were to add timbers in your bunk beams on the bottom that are 2 or 3 inches thicker on the driver's side would it help the logs roll off when you dump?
@zachodom7486
@zachodom7486 11 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Some that have swell in them wouldn’t roll no matter what lol. And sometimes when loading with the side loader they get sorta jammed in anyhow. I try to park on a slight hill every chance I get when I’m unloading to help a little or just use a block of wood to pull up on. Plus if ya did do that with the shims, the load might would ride a little uneven possibly, and with top heavy loads that wouldn’t be good. On log trucks, you sorta want a little extra on the drivers side to account for road crown: But 1-2” worth prolly wouldn’t hurt anything, although I’m not too sure it would help ya any either when unloading. So I can’t answer too well without trying it. Prolly be cheap enough to try. Thank you for the idea, I may consider something like that. I do like hearing from all you guys. They’re no longer manufactured. But there are used ones around especially here in the south. You just have to ask around and look. I run across them every now and then. They’ll usually bring 2-3k depending on their shape. Sometimes you can find a deal on a truck and loader together. That would be the best bet. And usually with a little love you can breathe life back into them. They’re pretty simple and easy to keep up.

Why you would fit in the East Texas logging industry just fine. Yellow pine is very very profitable.

Cool 😎. We don’t have much of a pine market here or pulpwood unfortunately and it hurts us at times. Our hardwood sawlog market is good and cross ties. But it would be nice to have pine and more pulp mills. Although pulp doesn’t pay enough really to handle it with animals. $20 a ton ain’t much when you can only haul 7 ton at a time. It about wouldn’t even pay the haul bill let alone anything left over. Anyway, thank you kindly for watching and commenting. I enjoy hearing from all you guys! Thanks!!

why dont you make tourself some 6-10 inch wood beams or one single beam that you would drive on under the driver side to tilt the truck a little so the logs roll off better when unloading

Right! In the hands of the right person, they’re about as safe and efficient as anything is. But on the flip side…can hurt you bad quickly! If you’re not paying attention. Thanks for watching and commenting!
