Ask any Welsh speaker today what the modern Welsh word for a Witch is, and they'll tell you it's "gwrach"...but does that word really fit the needs of a modern day magical practitioner? Where does that word come from? Are there better alternatives? We explore that very topic in today's video!
My new book releases February 2022!
Welsh Witchcraft: A Guide to the Spirits, Lore, and Magic of Wales.

Diolch yn fawr for the detailed language lesson! Little nuances like this are often lost to us language learners, so it's very valuable indeed.

I believe that a wise woman w once lived on the piece of land I own. Her hovel has gone but her garden persists.. She has guided me to herbs. Their purpose have provided prophecy. I have seen her once as an act of violence was perpetrated against her. She has become my guide in many ways. We don't share her language but communicate via empathy. I know her as Mamsy.

Witch trials were absent in Ireland and also rare in the Marches, especially Shropshire. I believe this is due to the continued allegiance to Rome in the west during the Protestant Reformation, although Lancashire would not fit my thesis.

I recently discovered your channel. I thought I should tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I especially appreciate the time you take to teach the history of Welsh practices and the language. I don't know who they are, but I know I have some Welsh ancestors. Your lessons make me feel more connected to them. 💜

This is such a lovely surprise. It is awesome to get to know you. I have ordered your book as I have a very deep connection with Wales as I was born in Bangor and lived my first few years in Amlwch Port. I was also touched by (who I believe was a witch) when I was born as I was born with a purple birth mark over the entire side of my face and one of the nurses at St. David's took me from my mother and covered my face in Gentian Violets. Once the stain was removed the birthmark went with it. I have spent many years calling myself a Welsh witch especially as I was born on Halloween, but it wasn't until now that I can actually research the topic. Thank you for doing this! Super excited about your channel and book!

What a beautiful blouse you are wearing...... The Welsh language fascinates me... I am now reading your book and would love it if you would do a video showing us how to pronounce words like "Cyfarchaf," Nuwies" that are in the prayers to Rhiannon or in the rain charm etc. Magical words!!!

Your videos are exactly what I’ve been looking for for a long time. I’ve been fascinated with Celtic mythology and witchcraft for a very long time but it’s been difficult to find information that is accurate or taught by a person who actually practices authentic witchcraft from her native land using the language and folklore she grew up with. Thank you so much for sharing your craft and knowledge it is very appreciated, keep doing this wonderful work.

I am finding this fascinating but I have to stop for a while to take things in. I wonder if I'm too old to learn it all. I am Welsh, my mother always referred to the Welsh witch . Is there a specific place to start please? Since a life charging "accident" 11 years ago, I have literally changed being "me". The closest I can say is I had a stroke. Now after rehabilitation in all areas of my being, I have this desire to understand the difference in me. I am more than drawn to your channel. I struggle to read and remember but "listening" is the best I can do, in smaller chunks. I just don't know where to start. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Enjoyed this very much, diolch yn fawr. May I ask three questions of you, please? The first: I expect you are aware that there is a little stream in the Cambrians that feeds into the Towy-fed reservoir of Llyn Brianne, called the Gwrach. I'm wondering if you know anything about why it might be called this? It isn't ugly or monstrous. I've been on a sacred journey through south-west Cymru, for 7 years (the Song of Ffraed) and this confluence is right at Her eastern-most reach. The second is: Do you have an authentic term that is cognate with the Irish Gaelic, "bandrui" (female druids)? Third: Would a Gwrach compare with the Scots Gaelic, " Cailleach"? Hope you can help. Thanks. Oh, just thought of this...I met a spirit witch, on the journey, and had a conversation with her. Her name is Eirwen.
