Many patients do not fully understand what is replaced when they have a knee replacement. I describe it as more of a resurfacing of your worn cartilage. Here I will show you what is done to the bone with a model knee and what is replaced when we do a total knee replacement or a partial knee replacement.

Had mine done a year ago. It's amazing how great it turned out, few weeks of pain but with therapy that went great its a good choice

Thank you for this information. This what I had, a Total Knee Arthroplasty. My surgeon showed me the X-ray film after the surgery. I’m a nurse and I had watched every video you have on Total Knee Arthroplasty. This what every surgeon should be giving their patients to watch post op. I have learned so much from watching your videos. I’m so grateful.

Thanks for your informative videos. I am Teddy,34 yr old, from MN, i had a debilitating RA and related medical issues. I had my left and right total hip replacement on july 2021, with a week apart btn the two surgeries, and on January 2022 i had a bilateral total knee replacement surgery. Its been quite a struggle getting over all this surgeries and recovery, now am doing pt and i am much better now compared to pre surgery. Thanks to my surgeon and the hospital. I would like if you try to make an explanation about getting hips and knees done and the possible changes overall, now i can only bend my knees about 124. My left knee is the troublesome one, IT band is making bending hard and painful

It seems that if a patient still has articular cartilage remaining on the femur, it can either be partially removed or completely removed, because the metal will now be sitting on where the cartilage was once was. Either way will work? Not sure why there would be any reason to leave some articular cartilage; just completely remove it.

What soft tissues are removed or cut and repaired in order to get access to the join to install these components? Asking because muscle, tendons and ligaments heal at different rates and may benefit from different exercises. Thanks

An incision is made in the capsule, along the edge of the quad tendon and patellar ligament. The collateral ligaments, the MCL and LCL, are protected. Most arthritic knees don't have an ACL but if it is there it is removed. The PCL can be left if it is intact or there is a special plastic that can be used when the PCL is absent or damaged. Hope that helps.

I have a huge list of allergies. Matter of fact was in hospital as kid because of allergies. Over time, some becane less sensitive, sone have not. I have highly reacted to many metals & adhesives. In an attempt to have the best TKA results i consulted my allergist. Was told allergic reactions is a concern. Historically, with other cases, they have tried to contact manufacturers regarding materials used, metal & bone cement. Manufacturers wouldn't cooperate. Yes, i know overall it's rare, yet i have valid history & concern. Am just trying to make an informed consent for the best long term result for my body. And actually thought not just the surgeon, but the manufacturer would want the same success. The manufacturer not so much, and the surgeon actually told said "If that's your mindset then I'm not your surgeon" he was upset. I was NOT trying to upset anyone. As patients, we are responsible to inform drs of medication, & allergies, like to latex. I was amazed & confused by the lack of material info, & the surgeon's response. I must be nieve thinking everyone wanted a long term success. Am hoping this is not typical reaction.

I commend you for gathering information to make a good decision. Maybe that was not the doctor for you. There was a study showing patients with more than 4 allergies has worse outcomes. Why? probably many factors but they couldn't explain why. Many implants offer different metal options now. Concerns being nickel most frequently. Although the implant may contain nickel, cobalt, and other metals the surface treatments are supposed to prevent 99% of those leaching out. Some companies offer a completely nickel free option. Best to get another opinion in your market and find someone who is willing to work with you.

Do you gain any height from this surgery?

Not typically. If your ligaments are stretched you may can a few millimeters. However, people with a flexion contraction before surgery or severe deformity like knock-kneed or bowlegged may feel taller once the knee is replaced because the leg is straighter.
