OMG!! I can't have a garden where I am because of a shared yard with dogs, no digging up etc, I am on a limited budget too. The Walmart bags and kiddie pool are AWESOME! I am so excited now for even just a small "garden". Some tomatoes and cucumbers, butter crisp lettuce, I wonder what else I'll plant now lol. THANK YOU!!

Buddy you hit the nail on the head, my grandfather grew everything in burlap sacks. He explained this to me 20 years ago. He also said Ruts lol he would tell ya, he farmed all his life and when he couldn't run the equipment to plow and disk his garden he went to burlap sacks. Had he known how good it worked and how much less maintenance he needed when he got "dialed in" he would have done it that way from the start. Miss that guy he taught me so many great things lol Thanks for sparking those memories.

Started gardening last year and have learned much since I started. One thing I have learned is the non woven grow bags definitely work better than solid pots or buckets. My potatoes, beans, and peas have done much better. I now am planting everything I can in grow bags.

Thanks for this, Larry! My spouse and I recently got into indoor gardening(mostly flowers, and last night we planted over a dozen different kinds of beans). We have a chestnut tree we planted from a seed a couple weeks ago that has already sprouted and is about a foot tall now, and we've been worried about having a big enough pot. The air pruning seems like it will be a really good system until it is ready to be moved outside. This will also help with everything else we are growing. Again, thanks a lot!

Great job Larry! My concern, for myself, is using buckets that aren't food grade plastics or bag (Walmart etc)that can leach dies. I know you lined the buckets with landscape cloth which may contain toxic plastics. Plastics with the triangle symbol and numbers 3, 6 or 7 should never be used. Numbers 1, 2, 4 or 5 are totally safe.

This is good information. I have great success growing in containers but I think developing another system where the roots can be exposed to air would be great. The only problem I have it the clay pots I have (which are very porous, but allow air into the root system) crack easily. I would like something attractive, economical, while allowing air to the roots. This video has inspired me! :))

Rainbow Gardens You didn't say how big you pot is. Clay pot that is. If you want to try the air system, before filling the clay pot with your favorite soil, take some landscape fabric and cut a piece that will go around the inside of the clay pot, and overlap it. Then, in relation to the pot, get some thick sticks that will go from top to bottom, maybe 1" or 2" thick and put them in between the landscape fabric and the pot. When putting the soil in try not to pack it around it to tight so the air will go to the bottom of the pot. You might have to put 2 or 3 sticks in to keep the soil from packing around it and cutting off the air. Give it a shot and see if that works for you and keep an eye on it and you just might think of a better fix than that but that might get you started. Good Luck, and Gardening............Namaste.............................

Your half right and half wrong..... Fabric bags allow more oxygen to the root structure, good for the plant. However the air does not prune the roots, it's the uv light that trims the roots, when the roots get near of poking threw the bag the uv light kills the tips of the roots before it can poke all the way threw, so it's light pruning...…..

Hello Larry, I understand that this is an older video but recently I have watched kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ap2hnNqisLjJlmQ.html (yes, it is in French but it has English subtitles which are very well written). The cell from that video sends it's "roots" to search the surroundings for the available food sources and later thickens the connections which bring "food". The plants have multiple types of roots. The thin ones develop first and search for food. I think that the air pruning works because in contact with air the thin roots discover the boundaries of the container due to the difference in humidity and after the mapping is complete the plant goes into "reproduction mode" (flowers/fruits) with the available resources. If this supposition is correct your technique makes a lot of sense because that's what we do as humans as well. As soon as we find what we need, even if it is not much, we try to settle and make it work with what we have the best we can.

Wow, thank you for the idea! I know grow bags are better than containers but never thought of using reusable shopping bags for it.

I believe it is more about aeration than root pruning. Roots need oxygen for respiration, period. But your bags will leak moisture too, so you end up using more water. A better solution is to use a bigger pot.

I think the point is you can use a 5 gallon bucket instead of a 20 gallon bucket or whatever the plants max root size would demand. If you want to plant your tomatoes in a bunch of comically large pots go ahead.

This is great. I've been getting into gardening & reading a lot about air pruning & how nurseries tend to have these non correctable root issues with trees & shrubs due to the plastic pots. I love the Walmart reusable bags idea, much cheaper than the fabric grow bags. Thanks!

Never seen the wading pool idea. The bad thing about fabric pots is that the soil dries out quickly. Looks like you solved that issue 😊
