Rob at high speed (60mph +) the Z and the GTR change the direction the wheel turns, so if you turn left the rear wheel also turns left. Imagine a high speed lane change it keeps stability rather than pushing the back end wide. Low speeds it turns the other way to turn harder without losing grip. The GTR system is more complicated than the simple system on the Z :)

Not Stupid, I wouldn't say that, skylines are rare in the rest of the world too, and they are great cars. At least in their time when new they were. Powerful and with a lot of little back then mechanical features to keep traction. Obviosly nowadays there are tons of cars with those features and tons of cars with more power.. And now as they are that expensive if you go for power and features only there are better choices.. Still, the Skyline is a legend.

It's called HICAS (High Capacity Active Steering) and upgraded to a SUPER HICAS system it was available on the Nissans of the late 80s and early 90s. what Rob filmed was sidewall deflection, look closer and the entire sidewall of the tire moves to the inside. I think the hicas system on his is bypassed. plug in the car and put it in diagnostic mode

The R32 has HICAS, something Nissan put in almost all their sports cars in the late 80s up to early 2000s. Though later R33 & later had Super HICAS which went from an oil actuator to electric. Strangely the R35 removed this feature...even though the current Infiniti Q70 still has it.

Galant VR4 had 4WS that only worked above 30mph, and turned with the front wheels up to 1.5°. It felt weird, and most people deleted it due to leakage, inoperability, or cause it felt scary. I think there's a reason most OEM's try rear steer for a year or two then stop - it might took great on paper, but IRL maybe not so much, just like the early 90's automatic door tracking seat belts...

In the R33 the back wheels turn in the opposite direction at slower speeds (like in your vid) and kind of rotate the car but at higher speeds they can also point the same direction and crab across a lane. Would be god to set up the camera again and see what happens.

If it's anything like the 4 wheel steering that was found on the 3rd generation Honda Prelude, then all you had to do to get the rear wheels to turn was start the car and turn the steering wheel while the engine was running. A friend of mine had a 3rd gen prelude, and that's all he had to do to show that it had 4 wheel steering. Considering that the 3rd gen Prelude was the first car to have 4 wheel steering, and the R32 came out in roughly the same time period, I wouldn't be surprised if the R32's 4WS system was similar to that of the 3rd gen Prelude.

You probably should know but I guess the video title would suck if it was: Skyline all wheel steering explained, or would it? A quick info about how HICAS actually works. The system activates when you are going around 80km/h or faster. It turns the rear wheels to the same direction as the front so if you turn left, the rear of the car tries to take itself closer to the corner which prevents oversteering and makes the car feel snappier/quicker on the corners when you maintain traction. In detail level the system might have a bit more to it when initiating turn or if the car detects some movements but that's basically it. The car fights oversteering by holding the rear in the corners. If you raise the car with lift so that the wheels spin freely and give it gas you can film how it works and there already is youtube videos about it. I owned a gt-r and now an R32 sedan with HICAS also.

Super Hicas is an electronic version of the Hicas that is controlled by electric motors or servos rather than being hydraulically controlled. Honda was first with this set up on the Prelude before the Nissan. Honda's system was actually superior but was over looked due to racers placing more emphasis on Turbo and power rather than control.

At higher speeds it's supposed to turn towards where you are steering. Cornering hard left it turns the rear wheels left to hold the car in neutral steering insted of oversteer or understeer. Could you make a video of this also? Becouse this is what I have been told by the japanese masters of Tsukuba in some random Option videos :D

It's called the HICAS system... took me about ten minutes to find the feature back in 08 when I first got my Skyline. Wasn't hard to find out like a needle in a hay stack. Most Skylines, and pretty much any Nissan performance car made in the R32 era had it. But majority of Skylines that come over tho have is disabled / removed. since they were either A) Drift cars, or B) Toy cars taken to the track. The system would take quite the beating and the foot work would break, or cause issues, hence the removal. I had a sedan, and it was still enabled. Although, didn't really notice it making a difference really. I guess I wasn't going fast around corners enough.

Most all wheel steering setups wont work when the car is off regardless of the sensors because there is no mechanical linkage. The front wheels have power steering and manual where the rears only have power steering. Its the same as a fully hydraulic steering setup that some people put on trucks, it doesn't work when the engine doesn't have power.

The HiCAS on the GTR are disabled by many hard core drivers to facilitate drifting (as drift became a phenomenon ) and and to hide the problems (as they aged and developed problems) when it comes time to selling them. Because 4 wheel steer counters the rear wheels losing traction and control these drifters would disable them giving rise to the incorrect perspective that 4 wheel steering does not work since hard core racers disable them.

He said his Toyota was crap in snow but for the mid 80s the car was loaded with modern equipment. My parents weren't car people so all the cars were automatic but they were pretty cool. I was young when they still had these cars in the early 2000s. My mom for her first prelude stolen and destroyed the transmission in her second prelude. Rob, everyone knows the R32 has all wheel steering, but everybody hates it and decides to delete this 'hicas' system (that's what it's called). The reason being when you're going around a corner the hicas system can engage causing the car to rapidly 'snap' in a direction which has thrown a lot of people in gtr's either off the road or close to doing so. So most people opt to delete it so that the car remains predictable.

Now if you look at the front side of the rear wheel, you'll see that wheel itself doesn't change its angle. The side mowement showed on this footage it's the tire mowing sideways because that's what flexible tires do. And you also can see it on the front side of the wheel

Was about to comment and say this is the attesa system, but something wasn't quite right... Lol It's called (Super) HICAS, I knew I'd seen it before, it only works under speed(s). Here's a little excerpt from wiki (lol) "HICAS was introduced on the 1986 (HICAS was almost used on the 1985 model but was not ready in time for production) Skyline GTS coupes (GTS, GTS-R, and GTS-X). The system was later adapted to work on many models in the Nissan range, beginning with the Passage GT. Earlier models of HICAS (hydraulic versions of HICAS) did not depend only on the high speeds using the speedometer but were used to maneuver at lower speeds through obstacles. After disabling HICAS, it has been noted that slow maneuvers including parking and quick response steering seemed more difficult.[citation needed] Earlier HICAS versions used hydraulics to steer the rear wheels. The hydraulic system was powered by the power steering pump and used speed sensors to determine how much and in which direction to steer the rear wheels." "Later versions, called Super HICAS, moved to an electric actuator for the rear steering rack, making the system much lighter. The Super HICAS system also used its own computer to control the system instead of speed sensors.[3] HICAS and Super HICAS rear wheel steering is limited to about 10 degrees in either direction." Still used today in G37 and Q45 etc.. Interesting stuff, the jeedeeahh was wayyy ahead of it's time... I really do need to pickup an R32 myself, think I might settle for a GTS-4 though, little RB20 to rev the piss out of...

Rob are you sure its not the same setup as the VR4 that activates at a certain mph? the VR4 kicks in at 30mph if I am not mistaken. Same type of hydraulic power rear steering. You can stick a vr4 on blocks and watch it kick in via mph.

there is a self diagnosis for the HICAS with the R33 GTR. turn on the engine, turn the steering wheel 5 times left and right (left-right-left-right-le...), then push the brakes 5 times, HICAS lamp starts blinking, another one on the breaks to activate blink code diagnostic, then about 5-6m very slowly forward, brake... and the rear begins to wiggle :> i don't know if that works with the bnr32, because its HICAS is hydraulic and the bcnr33 has super HICAS (electric).

i thought this was quite common knowledge, afterall there are quite a few override systems for the rear wheels, as this hinders more "advanced drivers" mainly in racing.

It's crazy to think this car was that engineered back in the 80s and 90s, but those methods are not used as much now.

u should do this again at highway speed and see if all 4 wheels turn the same direction or still counter steer. obviously im not suggesting an 80mph hairpin but im sure u have a curvy highway section or higher speed backroad near u

there should be a code you put in that allows you to test the steering without moving the car, at least thats how the 300zx was.

correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't believe you need to loose traction for it to work. also, at low speed it is against the way you are turning decreasing your turning radius, and at speed on the highway it will be with the direction you're turning for a faster lane change. unless the high speed is only on the super hicas, i'm not sure about that.
