Kevin Holler asked me for ideas on how to make an auxiliary handle for a one man crosscut saw. I attempted to write out the steps involved in what I thought would be a possible process. FB chose to drop them into the dumpster so rather than chase that shadow I decided to revert to my normal practice and create a video. Hope this answers Kevin’s questions. 😊

Unfortunately there are to many unscrupulous people out to make a quick buck.fortunately the world has you Sir. How many people would take the trouble to not only video instructions but measure explain and give suggestions on how to make a new one .and to top all that how it works .You are a true gentleman and a scholar I don't want one but I thank you for giving me hope in humanity and a very interesting video to boot..I'm proud to say I'm a sneelockite👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Oh and I can say I have the T shirt to prove it lol 👍

this is precisely how youtube should be used, how the pointless childish channels about nothing but their own drama exist, let alone are the watched by millions, i have no idea, was i really that stupid when i was 12? i really dont think so, i never ate the washing powder, or enjoyed idiocy, and craved for information and would have loved access to the internet 20 odd years sooner than i did, was already fairly early to it in 1995. things like wikipedia are also amazing, its a shame too many use youtube to push again the agenda of waste, stupidity and endless consumption, , you cannot do that if you dont create in the first place

Good information! I just acquired 4 crosscut saws and one of them is a one man saw. Of course none of them have handles so I started looking and found out very quickly that I wasn't about to spend my hard earned dollars on overpriced handles that i could make myself with a little know how and elbow grease. Thanks for showing the assembly and how the parts work to function properly! I still need to research a handle assembly for my 2 man saws as I will build those as well. Thanks for sharing.

Glad I could help. The western handles are different and require some forging to make them. The Michigan handles are a lot easier. 😁😎

Thanks very much! Next time at the hardware store I’ll purchase the relevant parts I need and document my attempt. Hopefully a hack saw and a drill press are all I need, and a big washer will work without a groove. The captured nut is the part I wasn’t understanding! I really appreciate the help! -KH.

Take pictures and a big washer will work fine. You might get a groove in a vise with a cold chisel and hammer it back flat. Might take a bigger washer though. Just a thought from a hollow head.

A long time friend is in charge of this concrete setup here and has been going to school for a while, a LONG while. He said he lacked 2 or 3 more and then he'd be certified to do ANYTHING! Only 60-something people in the WHOLE country are that way! He said the schools were $3k a piece and I reminded him that if and when the company got ONE job, ALL his schooling would be more than paid for. I told him I wanted his autograph. He's an old trucker too. Figures, don't it!

nice job of explaining (and showing) the auxiliary ("helper") handle for one-man crosscut saws. you might also check out the modern equivilents one may buy from crosscutsaw.com. good helper handles, and still cheaper (including shipping and handling) than the "collector grade" helper handles seen on e-bay. I guess that just collecting (and displaying?) your "rare, heirloom, vintage" handle collection is easier on the marital scene than trying to find space for the entire saws and handles? I do know some folks who collect only the manufacturer's dee-handle brass logo button - they throw away or give away the rest of the saw. sigh.thanks again, jim.

Two years. Sorry for the slow answer. I don't understand how YouiTube misses notifications? There is a group of collectors that see collecting pieces as more valuable than having a working too. The market for medallions is a pox on the hobby.

Good job, Unc! I'd fooled with handles like that before and was trying to remember where. Crosscuts, of course but somewhere else too. Maybe it'll bubble up. Tried the electric trim saw and the foot switch today and they work a lot better than I do. Had to hi-pole it up in the tree. The saw don't weigh much but it's right on the end of the fiberglass poles and that's far enough. I still like it better than a gas job and it cut very well. I might hit the drags one lick but no more. Now to clean up the mess. The easy part till I start on the walnut with 5 million tips to cut off with the shear. Got to start somewhere.

Lewie McNeely I have a Remington pole saw. Just an 8" bar but it cuts really well. I would be entirely happy with it if the chain didn't come off so easily. Bought it at Tractor Supply in Sturgis 20 years ago. It has held up pretty good except for the collet nut. I left it tightened up and hung the saw on the wall in the old workshop. It got cold and I think the plastc nut shrank and cracked. I cranked a hose clamp down over the collet and it works okay. The littlevsaw unbolts from the end. Lydia loved it. Over time she pruned a 40 foot tall balsam fir down until I took pity on the poor thing and cut it down. She also trimmed the forsythia bush flat to the ground thinking it would force it to grow. I ended up fastening thevsaw to the pole so it won't come off easily. The trees last longer now.

Mine is a Workz 110 volt saw, 8-amp with a 14 inch bar. I hairlipped a mount from a wire lifter that fits on the fiberglass pruner poles. The saw slung the chain right off 1st thing but a tweak from a 10 inch Crescent wrench fixed that, plus a little prying from a large phillips screwdriver to get the chain tight. It stayed on the rest of the time and I took it off the poles to cut limbs up. No counterweight but it'll cut rather well. Paid for and good enough for whom it's for AND the wood splitter electricinier helped me rig up a foot switch for it. Plug power into it and the saw too and off you go making shavings. It's got an oil tank but I leave it empty. It's heavy enough as it is!
@OldSneelock
@OldSneelock 6 жыл бұрын
Lewie McNeely I forget who makes it but I want one that goes over the limb and the blade rotates throught the branch. Won't cut much more than a 3" thick limb but I wouldn't have to apply a ton of force on a 10 foot pole straight overhead. 😈

This is the 3rd time I've tried to send you this and I hope i don't mess THIS one up too. WORKZ makes what you're talking about I think. It looks like a circular jaw on one end and a 'T' handle on the other. I got mine from Wally world. Hopes this helps. I was going to get one but knew I'd be using mine for bigger stuff. The 440 gets a little heavy cutting limbs kindling size.

I've made dozens of auxiliary handles and they're super easy to put together. In fact, most home made handles are superior to the junk available commercially these days. Good discussion on Blade Forums with links to part sources. www.bladeforums.com/threads/crosscut-saw-thread.885774/page-46

..I have seen those handles and some that had like a "J" hook on the end. Funny thing is down in my neck of the woods is the top handle is usually missing right along with the main one...

Lewie McNeely My scythe handle has the same type of handle a ferule but instead of a through pin it has a loop that goes around the main handle. My two man crosscuts have a similar handle to the scythe. The bolt has a loop that goes around the blade instead of a pin.
@OldSneelock

Ol James The J hook would be a good design. I think it would be easier to attach. I had to practice a couple times before I could install the handle one handed.

Thanks! I could not figure out how much the entropy was inside the ferrule. The square nut came out of the end, losing a rectangle of wood. Could have a ferrule with a cap to protect that channel from going round to square. I need to lathe a new one, the old one was my mothers fathers Karl, born in Brooklyn, circa1895. Do you want up in Western Washington lumberack before becoming an electrician, just like the father’s father: a lumberjack before becoming a physician.

we live in countries where saws, and entire countries are broken up and sold for the best dollar price on its parts, but few people agree its a bad thing, if you live on the 'winning' side. or it seems 51-52 percent of the voters at least.
