The past five years have seen an increase in anti-Semitic violence around the world.
We have witnessed mass shootings at synagogues, violent attacks on Jewish people in the streets and Jewish cemeteries desecrated. And while anti-Semitism is not new, the current social and political landscape across much of the globe has given rise to conspiracy theories, as populist leaders aim to exploit anti-Semitic tropes for political gain. What's more, there are dissenting views within the Jewish community on how to actually define anti-Semitism.
So what are the best ways to identify and combat anti-Semitism?
And how do we separate anti-Jewish rhetoric from criticism of the state of Israel and its policies?
In this week’s UpFront Special, Marc Lamont Hill puts these questions to Rabbi Brant Rosen, reconstructionist rabbi and founding member of the Jewish Voice for Peace Rabbinical Council, and Lara Friedman, president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.

International law does not recognize Palestine. There are 4 criteria needed for a state to exist in international law (according to the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States) 1. A permanent Population 2. A defined territory 3. The capacity to enter relations with other states 4. A Government The Arab refugees of the Levant who occupy Israel and call themselves Palestinians: - claim the land "from the river to the sea", meaning their supposed borders are from the Jordan River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. Prior to 1967 the West Bank belonged to Jordan, before that it belonged to the British Mandate. - was formed by Yasser Arafat in 1988, 40 years after Israel declared independence from Great Britain. - does not have a government. The PA, PLO, and Hamas are each battling for control over the West Bank and Gaza.

The theory of jews controlling the world is actually an very old conspiracy theory, from the times before the h*locaust. This antisemitic theory was used as an excuse by the n*tzis and as a way to incite hate and violence towards jewish people. The truth is jews are individuals and of all socioeconomic classes. There are videos on youtube that go into more depth about the origins of this myth, like the video "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" by AJC Arabic, "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" by Yad Vashem, or "Antisemitism Uncovered Video: Myth of Power". On the dangers of antisemitism, I would also recommend the video "Never Again: Heeding the Warning Signs" and the documentary "Hate Among Us: The Rise in Anti-Semitism". Please consider the consequences of your words and actions. Thank you.

@@edwinterry8873 There is no justification for racism or persecution of an entire religious/ethnic group of people. People are individuals and should only be held accountable for their own actions. We cannot make generalized statements about all jewish people being a certain way, that becomes racist. For example, if you want to critizice Israeli policy, do that, instead of inciting hatered towards jewish people in general. It would also be considered extremely unjust and cruel to blame jewish people for the holocaust, for example, or say that it was justified.

Semitic people include Arabs, Maltese and Ethiopians. Almost nobody is antisemitic when the term is properly applied. Some are anti Zionist while others are anti Jewish. Stop using the term antisemitism, it is misleading.

None of the other so-called Semites face any widespread racial or religious persecution. Also, the term Semitic is derived from the Jewish/Hebrew Biblical figure of Shem. Other "Semites" are named after Jews. Shem is our culture. Hebrew heritage, this is why the name is used to describe racism towards jews.

I know you use these terms interchangeably, but it's wrong both biblically and linguistically. It's like referring to all Euroeans as Italian. Also, Palestinians do face persecution solely based on their ethnic background. They are being monitored by Shin Bet and Mossad in preventive policing and countless human rights violations. The table of nations was a first attempt to put mankind into proper taxonomic classes. It wasn't accurate. Jews trace to Hebrews. Hebrews were Canaanites who branched off for religious reasons. Before we were Canaanites, we were Natufians. We are original to the Southern Levant. we are indigenous to Israel. Palestinians share the same DNA profile as Syrians and Jordanians. If Palestinians are the only ones facing the problems, you already proved it's not based at all on racism, nobody is racist towards Levantine Arabs. Rather, there is a territorial dispute between Arabs and Jews. Shem again is a character from Hebrew mythology that Arabs borrowed. There's no proof he ever existed and according to the Encyclopedia, he's just a character.

There's no bigotry of Arabs in Israel. 2 million Arabs are Israelis. There are 22 Arab ethnostates if you count Palestine. Nowhere is there an Arab state with 2 million Jews living as a happy minority. That's because Arabs are bigots. Arabs are racist towards Jews because the religions of Islam and Christianity contain a lot of blatant antisemitism and the religions encourage bigotry towards Jews. Arabs are mostly mindless followers. Jews aren't racist towards them though, therefore your argument fell apart. Jews also weren't racist towards the Germans in WW2.

Its an old word that has been in use for a long time to mean "anti-jew". It was actually not originally jewish people who came up with it, but some white-power people who started calling themselves antisemites, and the word then became known and established in that kind of use.

So anti semetism is people accusing American and Israel Jews of all the bad deeds in the world and fighting criticizing the right to determine for themselves where they can build their Jewish state that America can donate billions and weapons to. People don't realize that criticizing things like that represents an existential threat to American and Israel Jews because might make people start to accuse Jews of being involved in everything that has to do with money and weapons and start fearing that fearing that Jews might take over their countries and kill them. This is wrong, leave the Jews alone! Why do these horrible antisemites always choose one people to blame for all these evil things all around the world for all this these years? Why is there a special term for anti-jewish, Anti-semitism, but there isn't a special term for any of the other anti-religions? Good question: The word 'anti-Semitism' only applies to Jews because when people were discriminating against Jews in Germany and England earlier times Jews were the only Semitic people present. If any Arabs showed up they would have been treated the same. Many English words have illogical histories.

Antisemitism lives in the foundations of human society and human nature. The human ego-the desire to enjoy at the expense of others and nature-evolves throughout history and during a person’s life. The more it grows, the more it feels an opposite force also dwelling within. That opposite force is called a “point in the heart.” Contrary to our egoistic desires that wish solely to absorb pleasures into themselves, the point in the heart is a desire that has potential to develop into a desire that loves, gives and positively connects to others. The point in the heart is also known as the seed of the soul, as we can develop it to discover our soul-the connection that underlies those very points. The realization of the potential encased in this small point of desire is the ability to rise above the human ego, where instead of detaching from one another through our growing egoism, i.e. increasingly prioritizing self-benefit over benefiting others, we instead prioritize the benefit of others and positive human connection. The point in the heart is the opposite of our egoistic nature. There are people who host only the negative egoistic force, and there are people who have both the negative egoistic force and the positive altruistic force. When both positive and negative forces coexist in us, then we become called “Jews” or “Israel” according to our inner essence. Likewise, if we solely host the negative egoistic force with no revelation yet of the point in the heart, then we are called “nations of the world” according to that essence. We underwent several stages of development throughout history. The point in the heart first surfaced throughout human society in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians who felt the inner urge to seek something deeper in life beyond the earthly egoistic desires joined Abraham, who taught a method for how to nurture the point in the heart in order to rise above the ego and positively connect. Abraham organized the Babylonians who wanted to study with him into a group, and he called this group “Israel,” which is made up of the words “Yashar Kel” (“straight to God”), i.e. people who aim themselves directly at the attainment of nature’s upper force of love, bestowal and connection, which is opposed to the force existing in human beings, the force of reception. Since Abraham’s time, the two groups-Israel and the nations of the world-have undergone much development. Some from the Israel camp left the group to pursue their natural egoistic inclinations, i.e. with an inclination to the nations of the world, while some from the nations of the world felt that they possess a special closeness and connection, which draws them to Israel. In other words, Jews are not a nationality, but they are people who host the point in the heart, which associates them with the positive force of nature, and which is opposite to the egoistic force that we are born and raised with by nature. The source of antisemitism is in the contrast and conflict between the two opposite desires of our inborn egoism and the point in the heart that can develop our ability to rise above the human ego.

Perhaps that is because the state of Israel, born in 1948 as a homeland for European Jews ,became an occupying power, founded on ethnic cleansing of Palestinians which continues to this day under an apartheid regime...according to human rights organizations. You can fact check that. Furthermore, look at the map of Palestine in 1948 and then look at the current map. That will confirm the above.

@@sallymarvin5981 and I would add that in a way, the Israeli terrorist organizations which were behind creation of the state (Irgun and Haganah) set up the linguistic framework that we continue to use. I have heard heated conversations in Palestine as to whether they should refer to Israelis as Israelis or as Jews, but the founders of the state drew the division between Jews and Arabs, such that even Arab Jews are discriminated against systematically by Israeli institutions, on top of public antagonisms. Just sayin'

A useful discussion but a more inclusive approach would be even more useful. For example while speaking of the terrible oppression of Jewish people, past and present, why not mention the terrible suffering and oppression of all people across the world under colonial and imperialist control and continuing under neo colonial control. Was not the totally avoidable deaths of more than 30 million Indians under British colonial oppression or the murder of millions of black people forced into slavery by Britain and other colonial powers, equally horrifying. Of course there are so many other equally horrifying crimes and genocides committed against the people of the world which need to be brought into the narritive too as the discussion progresses. Otherwise it is basically the same old narrative going round in circles and never taking a leap to a global discussion about persecution and oppression. We live in a globally connected world: our narrative must reflect this transformation if we are to build a better world.
