As far as I can see Christian marriage is a post biblical incorporation of Roman marriage practices into the new religion to make it more acceptable to gentiles. Jews themselves maintained polygamy for long after as they weren't under the same pressure until they felt compelled to adopt the rules of the societies in which they lived

The class definitions of marriage are very under explored imo. It would be good to learn how marriage evolved over time.

There was more equality between the sexes in Germanic culture. Women were eve able to inherit. And the Romans were more accepting of different religions and cultural practices. Christianity didn’t exactly improve people’s lives. It started the Dark Ages.

@@sfcameron1 That's a fair question! We haven't been doing regular interviews for a while, but I'm being more proactive about scheduling and the calendar should be more useful this year. Having said that, I'm starting up a monthly newsletter to keep people more informed, and I'll be posting interview announcements on the community tab of the channel also.

Now you have me wondering about the history. Her man, his woman etc. This is still the form of language used in German. Well, with obvious exceptions, of course.

When I preach on Jesus' teaching on marriage (Moses gave you a rule as you are weak but should only be for adultery) I read it as Jesus speaking to men and extending protection for women - rather than the husband simply offering a certificate of divorce on a whim (whilst she had no protection or right to divorce him) he should have a good solid reason.

But if biblical marriage is not about 2 people fall in love, then how would Dr. Bird interprete Eph 5: 25 saying that husbands love their wives just as Christ love the church, i.e, husbands die for their wives?

I’m now lost as to why I care what the Bible says more than what the Odyssey, Code of Hammurabi, anything. If Moses is possibly just a compilation of myths and a centralized religion following Torah has zero history before 200BCE….. Why do I want the church, synagogue or mosque to continue teaching these religious texts as religion???? I no longer think believe what you want applies…. When science is stepping on the toes of all religion via archaeology.

@@DigitalHammurabi You're correct, the fact that I knew it doesn't make in my opinion a bad guest. For example I enjoy relistening to Dr. Ehrman any time. It was her goofy (not in a funny type of way) of stating things not sure if it was just a nervous thing. But also the bitter substratum of feminism. As opposed to Dr. Ammon Hillman that is slowly converting me to worship the divine feminine. 🤭 Either way it's just my opinion so there will be disagreement. Look forward to next stream with her again though, I like to always try something twice!

@@annemariededekind6271 did Jesus have a PhD? Did His disciples? Any of the early martyrs in the Bible, or prophets who declared the future? How did they possess this kind of knowledge yet not even have formal education? The entire argument is ridiculous in its foundation, because they assume that having a degree de facto enhances their understanding of the Bible. This is not what the Bible itself says. If we’re going to study the Bible, it would be most logically consistent to play by the rules the Bible proposes regarding its study… Jesus never said “Get a PhD and you’ll understand the doctrine I’m teaching.” He said in John 7: 17 If any man will do his [God’s] will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. “If you first ACT like I would act, you will understand the value of what I teach.” It’s that straightforward. There is no other way. The Bible is a “sealed” (encrypted) book by its own definition. And how is it “unsealed?” By worldly degrees, titles, feminism, and the philosophies of men? Nope. It’s unsealed by the honest and virtuous development of one’s character. Simple as that. If they are dedicated to doing the right thing, no matter the cost, then their efforts to understand scripture will expand, and light will come into their mind. And I’m afraid there are many-a-12 year old which frankly dwarf the character of a radical 3rd wave feminist “divinity doctor” who’s already murdered one baby, has no prophetic accomplishments to her name, and has never healed the sick, blind, deaf, lame, or dumb by her power. So I’m not impressed. 28 O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. 29 But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God.
