CTFs are one of the best ways to get into hacking. They require a lot of work and dedication, but are highly rewarding and teach you a lot. Here is a quick introduction on how to get started with CTFs.

I think that people don't talk about it as much, comparatively to video games because hacking seems to be very difficult.

Thanks, i participated at M*CTF 2015, it was great. But i don't know much about this topic, because i have another course in university (CS instead of computer security). So, i just had some small skill and did a few tasks (like reverse engineering, decoding, hex-viewing and other minor things). It was the best competitive experience i've ever had. 48 hours with my friend, and the benefit for me was knowledge.

Just went to the most recent one and read through the write up for what is named "ultra baby", what I would assume to be the easiest flag... Apparently it involves reading assembly code and using buffer overflows to overwrite function calls. I have zero idea of wtf is going on. Some other challenges were slightly easier (imo) , one just involved you decompiling a java file and running the for-loop to find out what the result was, but the fact that "ultrababy" was completely out of my comprehension was pretty devastating.
@LiveOverflow
@LiveOverflow 7 жыл бұрын
That's normal :D it's ok. I feel the same with many other challenges. Did you see this writeup? github.com/burlingpwn/writeups/tree/master/EKOPARTY-CTF-2016/Pwning/Ultra%20baby To me at least that's pretty clear. Maybe I make a write-up video of that.
@pdot2901

Thanks again! Can you also make a vid about what tools you use and how you set up your workspace? Do you use vagrant, a (Kali) VM etc. I'm mostly struggling with keeping my laptop organized and clean during/after/between CTF's because of all the different and rare tools you generally need. Using a VM like Kali is fine and has a lot of tools in it, but that doesn't work as fine as a normal host Windows/OSX/Linus.
